Please join me in the community-wide - Lent Bible Study on Sunday evenings beginning on

March 5, 2017 and ending on April 16, 2017.

Lent Bible Study on Sundays - 6:00 - 7:30 pm Stanley United Methodist Church

501 Dodson Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37404 423-329-7012 (for more information or to order a book)

During Lent each year, Christians give up something as an act of sacrifice and spiritual discipline. Often it is something like chocolate, knowing that after Easter Sunday they can once again enjoy what they have given up. James Moore challenges readers to take it further―to give up something spiritually that they would be better off not doing. He invites all to seek God's help to focus on eliminating one habit or attitude that is destructive. Imagine giving up envy, jealousy, self-pity, apathy, procrastination, gossip, resentment, or negative thinking, how much better life would be.

The forty days of Lent are ideal to use this study and prepare to give up something bad while preparing to fully embrace the "Good News" of Easter. Study includes seven sessions, one for each Sunday in Lent and Easter Sunday. Each session features a Scripture reference, a personal reading, questions for personal reflection or group study, and closing prayer.

P.S. This is not a sheep stealing operative lol. Please come with your pastor, your friends and your family and return with your Pastor, your friends and your family. I look forward to the Christ fellowship during this season of self-denial, repentance and prayer.

10

What is Lent and why does it last forty days?

Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays,

which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy

Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon

word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days

represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness,

enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin

his ministry.

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for

the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and

reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare

new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on

their relationship with God, often choosing to give up

something or to volunteer and give of themselves for

others.

Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because

each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the reverent

spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the

Resurrection.

Jude 1:20-23 (NIV)

20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves

up in your most holy faith and praying in the

Holy Spirit,

21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for

the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you

to eternal life.

22 Be merciful to those who doubt;

23 save others by snatching them from the

fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—

hating even the clothing stained by corrupted

flesh.

May you always walk in the streets of gold, God’s love forever flows.

For the happiness you gave us. No one could ever know.

It broke our hearts to let go, But you did not go alone.

For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.

Many times we have cried. If our love could have saved you,

You never would have died. You suffered much in silence.

Your spirit did not bend. You faced your pain with courage

Until the very end.

“If You Knew”

If you knew where I am standing If you could see the sights I see

If you could hear the angels singing The song they sing eternally

If you knew the One I’m holding Could see the smile He smiles at me

If you knew where I am resting You would not cry for me

I’m resting in the arms of Jesus No other place would I rather be

So if you shed a tear Please don’t shed it for me

For if you know where I am resting You would not cry for me.
