Someone posed the question, “Are photographers becoming obsolete?” One answer is that photography is an art form and will never become obsolete but it is changing and becoming more rarefied in the face of the growing ubiquity of photography becoming a common mode of self-expression 1 . The use of smartphones and social media contributes to this - cameras are everywhere. Photographs play an integral role in this ever-changing world and shape our stories of news and history. Just as the season is changing to autumn with all its many facets so is photography and it is not going away. Many photographers I’ve spoken to said that they had not picked up their cameras during the pandemic, even though there is so much to photograph. Nature seemed to breathe because people weren’t out. On a walk, some turkey buzzards blocked my path with their wings as their young were trying to eat some fresh roadkill. They were on the sidewalk and I was in their way. With that being said, Bowie-Crofton is in full swing for our new year together. Zoom has allowed us to reach out and connect with members, who typically could not attend in person. This month we will have our first open competition. Show your work! Listen to the judge’s comments not only for your work but to comments made about other entries. Stefan Kaben will be contributing to Photo Talk with a brief talk about Close-Up photography, as well as Leon Smith, who will conduct an in-depth How-To on the same subject, which is November’s competition theme. Someone posed the question, “Are photographers becoming obsolete?” One answer is that photography is an art form and will never become obsolete but it is changing and becoming more rarefied in the face of the growing ubiquity of photography becoming a common mode of self-expression1.

On a walk, some turkey buzzards

blocked my path with their wings as their young were trying to eat some fresh roadkill.

Comments from the President, continued from page 1

by Jeanine Cummins, President

Four members of the Bowie-Crofton Camera Club have images in the juried art show “Bright Colors,” sponsored by the Bowie Arts Committee. Normally, these would be framed prints on exhibit at the Bowie Town Hall. This year the exhibit is virtual and can be viewed here: www.flickr.com/photos/110495221@N02/sets/72157715627974403/ All four of these artists are near each other on the website. Clicking on each one will expand the view and give further details. Here is the list:Monica Hawse, “Cherry Blossoms”Monica Hawse, “Yellow Butterfly”Jin-chung Hsu, “Curvy Calla”

Stefan Kaben, “Deep Breath of Spring”Karen Smale, “Dandelion Detail” And speaking of on-line exhibits, Vincent Ferrari has five photographs entered in the annual Pitt-Greensburg Arts Show, which is, of course, a virtual exhibit this year. Vincent’s five entries are in the “judged” category, meaning that they will be judged against the other photographic entries in the show, with winners announced on October 8. To see his entries, follow the link below. Vincent’s photos begin with number 96.www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRAFf21BhAo&feature=youtu.be

Justin Rogers will present Southwest Images for our monthly Program meeting. To cap off the month, Carl Lancaster ([email protected]) has put together a field trip to photograph the Frederick County covered bridges. You may contact him directly if you are interested and check our website for further information. This month is also the second half of Hispanic Heritage Month. In Focus (https://rb.gy/ecw8vg),

is a blog published by Nations Photo Lab on Ten Photographers of Hispanic Heritage You Need to Follow. Learn of different perspectives affected by culture, lifestyles, and political beliefs. Do you think photography is becoming obsolete? Don’t let that happen because it is important to tell your story. 1. Author Unknown

With Covid-19 standing in the way of in-person viewing of photo shows, there are many on-line exhibits to see. One organization that has plenty of options to choose from is the Museum of Photographic Arts, based in San Diego, California.

At present, the museum has six on-line exhibits, including “The Nagasaki Journey Archive” - photographer Yosuke Yamahata. Additionally, there

is an exhibit on contemporary Mexican photography, a celebration of five women artists, along with other fascinating shows. To see them for yourself, visit the following link:

Competition CornerMike Washington will be our judge for November’s “Close-Up” competiton

by Roz Kleffman, VP Competition

I am pleased to announce that our judge for the November competition will be Mike Washington.

Mike is a certified MPA judge with a keen eye for details. His bio speaks volumes of a man who appreciates photographic art and the making of a good photo. Mike became interested in still photography as a film making student in the 70’s to augment his appreciation of visual literacy. He continued his enthusiasm of this hobby though the 80’s, but eventually started letting his camera collect dust through the rest of the century while focusing on a career in the audio-visual presentation and entertainment industry. Early in the new millennium,

he purchased a digital point and shoot camera and reignited his interest. Through the early 2000’s he focused on refining his skills in technique, composition,

processing and editing. The “hobby” has since morphed in to a full time passion. His subject matter varies, as he does not care to restrict himself to any singular genre. As a photographer, Mike sees the world as a visual smorgasbord and he approaches it with an insatiable appetite. He captures moments and creates images.

The theme for November is Close-up. Note that there is NO restriction on the lens used but you need to get in close. Photos by Mike Washington.

How-To Meeting - October 26Close up and Macro Photography - Leon Smith

by Stefan Kaben, VP How-To

Leon is a long time amateur photographer having picked up a film camera in junior high school. He actively pursued his hobby until life got in the way, his darkroom was closed, and his SLR gave way to an Olympus XA2 to record family activities. The digital revolution brought him back to serious photography in 2005 or so. Since then he has once again become an avid amateur taking closeups of the things around him, photos of birds, documenting the life of his grandchildren and getting landscape shots.

Leon will discuss the tools and techniques required for close up and macro photography. The emphasis of his talk will be on capturing photographs of items that when measured on the sensor are 1/4 life size to life size or bigger. He will identify the equipment that can be used from inexpensive diopter lenses to extension tubes and macro lenses and discuss some of the pros and cons of each. He will also discuss how to

overcome some of the issues of getting well lit sharp photos such as camera motion, subject motion, the problem of illuminating small subjects, and how to overcome issues of very limited depth of field. Photos by Leon Smith.

Program Meeting - Octrober 19Images of the Southwest - Justin Rogers

by Catherine Sheppard, VP Programs

October’s Program Speaker will be Justin Rogers. Justin was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and photography has always been a part of his life in one way or the other. Growing up, Justin was an avid lover of the outdoors and spent most of his free time in the mountains on skis, wheels or his feet. Often these activities involved him performing some sort of stunt or feat one could deem camera ready.

As the years passed, Justin’s desire shifted from being in front of the lens to becoming the creator of compelling images. Focusing on natural light, motion, and little details, his images portray our world as he sees it. In blending the creative and technical aspects of digital photography, Justin subtly strives to pique curiosity in the imagination of the viewer.

Field Trip Emergency Information FormBe sure to have it with you in your camera bag

by Leslie Ferrari

It’s a new club year, time to complete or review your emergency medical form.

The Emergency Form offers confidentiality for the field trip attendee and ease of use for the field trip leader. The top part of the form is to provide the field trip leader with contact information in case of emergency. The bottom portion will be given to emergency responders to assist them in providing optimal medical care.

You can complete the form by hand or make it easier on yourself and download the form from the B-CCC website. From the B-CCC home page, highlight or

click on the tab Resources and then click on the Field Trip Emergency Information Form. You can save the form to your computer. Complete and print the form as detailed below. That way, if you have a change in medical condition, you don’t have to start from scratch. Before going on a field trip, please complete the form and put it in an envelope. Seal the envelope and put your name on it. Then put the envelope in your camera bag. If you have a medical emergency, the leader will retrieve and open the envelope. If there are no emergencies, leave it in your camera bag and you’re ready for the next field trip!

This month’s Parting Shot is from Denise Hill. If you would like your image and story presented here, send it to:

I often think about submitting a photo for the Parting Shot then saw the Parting Shot photo from Al Alexander in the January 2020 Viewfinder and thought about the time I visited the Reversing Rapids. Instead of sharing a similar shot, this is from earlier in the day when I visited a small Brunswick town with water views.
