LIVE LIFE AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD

Experience the beauty of Tasmania’s north-west coast, a location aptly named the ‘Edge of the World’.

Its off-the-beaten track setting has some of the

state’s most engaging natural wonders, plenty of

historic places to discover and friendly people that will

welcome you wherever you go.

HISTORIC STANLEY

From a rise along the Bass Highway at Sisters Hills,

about 20km from Stanley, you’ll see the iconic Nut in

the distance, jutting out from a narrow isthmus. At 152m

high the Nut is an intriguing landform, the solidified

lava lake of a long-extinct volcano. Its presence

provides a striking backdrop to historic Stanley, one of

Tasmania’s prettiest coastal villages.

This is one place in the world where even time getting lost

will be worthwhile... with ancient history to uncover, amazing

landscapes to explore, and locals who will be more than

happy to reveal our hidden gems. Isn’t it about time you came

up for a breathe of fresh air. Let your journey begin, down

that lane and around that corner...

THE WILD COAST Travel our windswept coastline which

greets the enormity of the Southern

Ocean, where if you sailed due west

you wouldn’t hit anything until

you ploughed into the tip of South

America some 17000 kilometres

distant. A length of coastline battered

by the Roaring Forties and lined

by long beaches and giant dunes

through which tannin-stained rivers

and creeks flow.

The coast provides some amazing

nature-based experiences. Visitors

can participate in river cruises and

guided walks, kayakers, anglers,

bushwalkers and wildlife watchers are

catered for as well.

Cape Grim, on the north-west tip

of Tasmania, is where the Southern

Ocean and Bass Strait collide. Book

a tour to see the historic Woolnorth

property and Wind Farm of the same

name – one of Australia’s largest –

and to breathe some of the cleanest

air in the world and if the wind is

really howling, hold on tight!

The Tarkine has many faces,

and its richness extends

even further beyond

its globally significant

rainforests. It is a natural

and cultural treasure trove

of almost 370,000 hectares.

A PRICELESS GEM

A combination of dramatic

and breathtaking

wilderness, abundant

wildlife and a deeply

layered history has created

a wild and sacred place.

The rugged west coast

forms the Tarkine’s most

distant extremity, where

gigantic waves from the

Southern Ocean pound

jagged rocks and endless

stretches of pristine

beaches, framed by

undulating dunes.

Nestled in the North-West corner of Tasmania, Australia’s island state is the greatest expanse of cool temperate rainforest, and the second largest in the world. The Tarkine is an intriguing experience.

These coastal heath lands

conceal Aboriginal middens

accumulated over thirty-five

thousand years by the tarkiner

people, the first inhabitants.

From exposed mountains to

intricate caves, the Tarkine is vast

and diverse, but the most enduring

memories are forged in the

rainforests.

The Tarkine is ageless, powerful and

awe-inspiring. Whether you explore

the Tarkine by foot, bike, car,

air, boat, or guided tour, you will

behold scenery that will leave you

breathless and eager to see what’s

around the next corner.

The exact demarcation of this area has yet to be finalised but is bounded roughly by the Southern Ocean to the West, the Arthur River to the north, the Pieman River to the south, and the Murchison Highway to the east. The Tarkine covers approximately 370,000 hectares.

LOCATION

The area can be accessed from several points. To get to

the Arthur River, take the A2 west from Stanley for 55

kilometres to the dramatic and wild surfing beaches

of Marrawah, then continue 18 kilometres south along

the C214. To get to Corinna travel 50 kilometres north

from Zeehan on the gravel C249 and for Waratah travel

64 kilometres south from Somerset on the A10 via

Hellyer Gorge State Reserve.

CLIMATE

The Tarkine region has a moderate climate with an

average maximum summer temperature of 22oc,

while average winter maximum is 14oc. Here you can

experience the distinct difference of the seasons from

long summer days, to wind swept fire-lit nights. Wet

weather usually takes place in winter, which makes the

Tarkine a great winter destination with all the amazing

waterfalls available to see.

THE TARKINE NAME

For 35,000 years the Tarkine has been

the home to the Tasmanian Aboriginal

tarkiner people who inhabited the

Sandy Cape region of this island’s wild

west coast. The name Tarkine means

belonging to, or of the tarkiner.

The Aboriginal community know it

as (‘tar-keen-nee’) and continue a

strong cultural connection to this

special place today.

TRANSPORT

If you are coming from interstate you

can fly Regional Express into Burnie

or QantasLink into Devonport airports

direct from Melbourne Airport.

Both flights are just under an hour.

Alternatively you can board the Spirit

of Tasmania in Port Melbourne and

arrive in Devonport eleven hours later.

Hire cars are readily available in Burnie

and Devonport.

On the border of the Tarkine

is the town of Arthur River,

which is the starting point for

beach and forest explorations,

wildlife viewing, bird-watching

and cruises aboard the MV

Reflections. There are facilities

for camping, picnics and

barbecues.

South of Arthur River is the

Western Explorer, an unsealed

road that takes you to the tiny

settlement of Corinna, on the

Pieman River, just over 100

kilometres (62 miles) south. Here

the Fat Man punt will carry your

car across the water so you can

continue your journey.

The Tarkine and its unique

beauty spans a significant

region of north west Tasmania,

encapsulating three gateway

townships; Arthur River, Corinna,

and Waratah.

Tarkine adventure call the Stanley

North West Tasmania is home to many of the world’s most thought after species of wildlife, but one of the most famous groups that tourists flock to see and tick off their list is ‘Tasmania’s Big Five’.

Spotting Tasmania’s Big Five throughout

the North West Coast is made easy with

several specialty species tours operating

throughout the region. Joining a tour or

visiting our National Parks and Reserves

help to understand the characteristics and

habitats of these animals much better.

So, now you know what the big five is,

time to find out who the big five are!

WHITE-BELLIED SEA EAGLEAdults are black and white

under, and grey over the wings,

with a white head and tail. They

have a wing span of 2 m and

weigh up to 4.5 kg. There are less

than 200 pairs in Tasmania. On

average each pair will produce

less than one young per year

(some have none, some two).

Two breeding pairs can sometimes

be seen while cruising up the

Arthur River on the M.V. Reflections

(AR Reflections River Cruises). Call

Tasmanian Pademelon

TASMANIAN PADEMELONThe rather unusual common

name is derived from the

Aboriginal word for the animal.

Like a number of Tasmanian

marsupials, the pademelon, until relatively recently, occurred

on mainland Australia but has become extinct there due

to loss of habitat and predation by introduced animals.

Pademelon’s can be seen in many rural and bushland areas

throughout the region when slowly driving at night along

secondary roads.

Tours are available with Tall Timbers Adventure Tours.

TASMANIAN GIANT CRABThe Tasmanian Giant Crab is one

of the largest crabs in the world,

weighing up to 16 kilograms

and a carapace width of up to

46 centimetres. They live in the

waters of the Southern Australian

continental shelf to depths of 300

metres. These creatures have a slow

growth rate which means that a

large 16 kilogram crab could be over

100 years old.

Visit this amazing creature and many

others at the Stanley Seaquarium.

For more info call 03 6458 2052.

TASMANIAN DEVIL

The Tasmanian Devil is a well known

carnivorous marsupial which is

confined to Tasmania. The

animal once occurred

on mainland Australia,

but became extinct

there 3-4,000 years

ago. The devil

is primarily

a scavenger. It undertakes wide

ranging forays in search of carrion.

It is widespread across a number

of habitats throughout Tasmania’s

North West Coast.

Devil Facial Tumour Disease is an

extremely rare and aggressive cancer

that is driving the iconic Tasmanian Devil

to the point of extinction -

more than 80% have been lost.

LITTLE PENGUINThe scientific name of the little penguin

Eudyptula minor, is most descriptive. Not

only is it the smallest of all penguins, but

also the Greek word ‘Eudyptula’ means

‘good little diver’. Left to themselves,

penguins will leave the water at last

light so that they are under the cover of

darkness, which helps to protect them

from predators.

PAN-SEARED STANLEY SCALLOPS

Create your very own regional dish in the comfort of your own kitchen. We recommend Pan-seared Stanley Scallops with a Pernod & Cream Sauce using premium local ingredients found right here in Stanley.

SHOPPING LIST

8-10 good size scallops, roe on small amount of olive oil 30ml Pernod 80ml pouring cream Sea salt, pepper and fresh ly chopped parsley to season METHOD

1 Heat a small frypan with a little olive

oil over a hot gas flame until the pan is barely

smoking.

2 Add 8-10 good size scallops and toss

quickly for a few seconds in the hot oil

(careful not to burn).

3 Pour in 30ml (approx.) of Pernod

and flambé in the pan, continually

tossing the scallops until there is no longer

flame from the pan and all the alcohol is

burnt off. You can substitute Pernod for a

good quality Tasmanian White Wine but the

sauce will not be quite as rich.

4 Add enough pouring cream (approx. 80 ml)

to coat generously and poach the scallops in

the pan. Reduce the gas flame to a medium heat at

this point.

5 Season with sea salt, freshly ground black

pepper & finely chopped fresh parsley.

6 Reduce the cream by about one third until the

sauce is thickened. This whole process should take

approx. 3-5 mins.

7 Serve with freshly baked bread and a glass

of Tasmanian Sauvignon Blanc.

Please note this map is a simplified edition to demonstrate

route. For detailed navigation consult your road map.

THE NORTH WEST WAY

A drive for those looking for the road less travelled,

through rich dairy land and coastal vistas. Explore a

national park that’s worth a closer inspection, meander

through spectacular gardens, learn about timber heritage

and discover forests with magnificent waterfalls.

Dip River Forest Reserve, a popular spot for the locals, is

just 30 minutes south of Stanley. It is home to the Big Tree

and the unusual, hexagonal basalt columns of Dip Falls,

which are especially picturesque after heavy rain.

A viewing platform provides a great outlook of the top

of the falls, and the more energetic can walk a steep

pathway to the base of the falls. BBQ facilities are

available – get in early!

Touring

The Nut, Stanley

Julius River Reserve

Slow down and enjoy the beauty of Tasmania’s North West Coast. Two designated scenic routes use roads less travelled to help visitors discover diverse landscapes, history and culture.

From coastal fishing villages to small

rural communities and river’s-edge

towns, each route has it own theme

or story. These planned touring

routes highlight landmarks, natural

wonders, wildlife and all kinds of

interesting features.

TARKINE DRIVE ROUTE

The Tarkine is richly woven in human history and

natural beauty. There’s plenty to do in

the area, whether it is admiring the splendour

of tall trees and graceful rivers in silent rainforests,

or getting up close to a curious cow.

The best way to explore the richness of the Tarkine is by

taking a journey of discovery on the north-west section

of the Tarkine Drive. There’s no better way to enjoy the

sights: pretty coastal hamlets, rich agricultural land, cool

temperate rainforest and wild places. Your journey can be

as relaxed or as energetic as you like.

Whatever you choose, you’ll be breathing in

some of the world’s cleanest air - it has travelled thousands

of kilometres across Antarctica and the

great Southern Ocean before making landfall in

western Tasmania.

Nature-based experiences abound along the north-west

section of the Tarkine Drive. Visitors can take a leisurely

cruise along the tannin-stained Arthur River, spotting

kingfishers and sea eagles along the way. Or wander

through the mysterious Tarkine Forest Adventures at

Dismal Swamp, where the adventurous are

transported via a 110m slide into the world's only

Blackwood forest sinkhole.

The popular Julius River Forest Reserve has a half hour

walk through cool temperate rainforest and visitors can

stop at Sumac Lookout on the way for an amazing view

of the Arthur River. At Lake Chisholm Forest Reserve, a

meandering path through majestic old myrtle forest

takes visitors to the eerily still, flooded limestone sinkhole

known as Lake Chisholm.

Lake Chisholm Forest Reserve

Your journey into the Tarkine’s most distant extremity starts here. Set amidst a breathtaking landscape this drive allows easy access through forest reserves and working forests through to the Tarkine Coast where gigantic waves from the Southern Ocean pound jagged rocks and endless beaches.

suggested itineraries, download the

Walking tracks in Stanley

1 GREEN HILLS -

DOVECOTE ROAD LOOP

is popular with locals for

walking and cycling. The

route utilises the existing

road and takes approx

1 hour. It is considered to be

of moderate difficulty.

The walk passes Highfield

Historic Site and rural

landscapes and has views of

the Nut and the coast.

There are scenic walking tracks in Smithton and Stanley, whether you are looking for a gentle stroll or a physical challenge, a seaside ramble or a landscape vista. They can be accessed easily.

2 STANLEY HISTORIC

VILLAGE WALK utilises

existing footpaths and

takes walkers on a tour of

the many historic buildings

within the town. Shorter

or longer walks on this

route can be taken from

15 mins to 1 hour.

3 THE NUT - LOWER

LOOP WALK Easily

accessible fire trails around

the base of the Nut giving

walkers great glimpses of

the Nut’s rugged Southern

Face. This trail can be

accessed via Browns Road

opposite the Nut Rock Café.

The loop walk will take

around 20 mins.

4 THE NUT SUMMIT LOOP

This circuit is the most

popular of Stanley walks. It is

a moderate to difficult walk

due to a steep pitch, however

this section can be bypassed

through the use of a chair lift.

This trail takes 1 hour from

the car park. Spectacular

views can be experienced

from the many lookouts.

5 TATLOWS BEACH WALK

starts near the Stanley

Cabin and Tourist Park,

follows the beach then heads

inland over sand dunes.

It then follows the disused

rail line. The walk is

considered to be of easy to

moderate difficulty and takes

1 hour return.

Enjoy the freedom of visiting communities off the main routes while exploring the region’s more remote and wild natural attractions.

It’s worth remembering that

although Tasmania is small,

its landscape is diverse and its

500,000 strong population

decentralised. Tasmania is 315

kilometres (189 miles) west

to east and 286 kilometres

(175 miles) north to south. It

is comparable in size with the

Republic of Ireland, West Virginia

(USA) and Hokkaido (Japan). It

covers an area of 68,331 square

kilometres

(26,376 square miles).

Let your journey begin!
