June 2 Eight To The BarListening to “Eight to the Bar” is a lot like driving along a time-warped highway precisely halfway between Count Basie’s Kansas City and Fats Waller’s Harlem, where the car radio picks up everything from Jumpin’ at the Woodside to the Andrews Sisters. Their material, like their outlandish wardrobes and onstage choreography, is a colorful mix of forties jazz and swing, fifties jump blues, and some of their own swing-influenced tunes. With their female and male vocals, saxophone (their sax player, Collin Tilton, is Van Morrison’s original sax and flute player who played on Morrison’s quadruple-platinum-selling Moondance album), guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, this unique sextet pack a musical and visual wallop not seen in New England since the group’s inception in 1975. Since that time they have released 12 CDs and have excited audiences from Europe to the Caribbean. The band has been named “Best All Around Band” by the CT Now Readers’ Poll 2018. June 9 91 South BandMassachusetts-based, “91 South” is a five-piece band with a remarkably versatile lead singer backed by a talented keyboardist, percussionist, and lead and bass guitarists. Together, they bring you back to the days of Elvis, Beatles, Johnny Cash, Rolling Stones, Doors, and Kinks, and then take you on a musical journey into the ‘90’s with the likes of Bon Jovi, AC/DC and Van Halen. Each member has 25+ years of experience, with well-known acts throughout the Western Massachusetts and Connecticut area. “91 South” maintains an active performance schedule, playing classic rock-and-roll at nightclubs, weddings, and corporate and private events. June 16 Six Pack of Blues “Six Pack of Blues” is a high-energy jump swing/blues band from the Hartford, CT and Springfield/Western MA area. Playing classic blues/swing as well as contemporary versions, “Six Pack of Blues” is the band to get you dancing the night away. Band members are: Fran Drew (vocals), Russ Perrier (bass), Wendy Mancini (sax), Tom Moore (guitar), Steve Savaria (drums) and Sante Isopo (sax, harmonica). Six Pack of Blues......Good for what ails ya! June 23 Studio Two-The Early Beatles Tribute “Studio Two” is a headlining Beatles tribute band, comprised of Berklee Alumni who focus on the most exciting, energetic period of The Beatles -- the early years. Choosing from a catalog of songs from their club and touring performances, “Studio Two” captures all of the excitement and danceable 50’s and 60’s Rock ‘n’ Roll songs The Beatles helped popularize. All of this is done in period correct attire and equipment. You will be transported in time! June 30 The Heritage Pops Orchestra“The Heritage Pops Orchestra” is a 20-piece orchestra that prides itself in playing a wide variety of big band style music. They have been performing concerts all over Western MA for over 20 years providing quality music for a variety of occasions. They provide music from the big band sounds of Glen Miller, Harry James, and Lawrence Welk, to the music of many ethnic origins, with a touch of light classical music. The band also includes modern rock songs that many will love and dance to as well. The orchestra is led by the lovely vocals of Ann Maggs and complimented nicely by the vocals of Ted Nowak. They are under the direction of Brian Cervone. Their arrangements are all done by their great staff of arrangers and they promise that you will always hear something that will satisfy your musical tastes. July 14 Off The Record “Off The Record” is known throughout Western Massachusetts. “Off The Record” plays hits from the 60’s and 70’s featuring classic rock & roll. They are a high energy group who get their audiences up and off of their seats and dancing. July 21 The Eddie Forman Orchestra“The Eddie Forman Orchestra”, also known as “E.F.O.”, is a Western Massachusetts polka band that has been performing since 1968. The band’s enthusiasm and love for the music they perform, their versatility and ability to embrace a wide range of styles, and their dedication to strong, lively performances make the E.F.O. an enduring success. People of all ages are invited to join the E.F.O. to enjoy a fun filled evening of good music. July 28 Shakin’ All Over“Shakin’ All Over” is one of New England’s Premier Dance bands, specializing in performing tribute to the dance hits from the Top 10 from 1954-1964. Their song list now includes a selection of well over 300 songs from this legendary era of Rock ‘n Roll. This is their 18th year of performing throughout New England. If you like 50’s & 60’s music, come and dance and you will be “Shakin’ All Over”.

August 4 The Karen Carpenter Story Starring Donna LeeIn this tribute show, Donna Lee explores the musical treasures of the Carpenter’s catalogue and brings to life songs of joy, love and longing. From their first hits, a reworking of the Beatles, “Ticket to Ride”, and Burt Bacharach’s “Close to You’, the Carpenters created a unique body of work and established themselves as one of the most successful pop music groups of all time. Led by Karen’s rich contralto voice, the Carpenters rose to the top with “Rainy Days and Mondays”, “Hurting Each Other” and “We’ve Only Just Begun”. July 5 Tom Stankus as T-Bone presents: T-Bone’s Tropical Adventure Spend an imaginary day with T-Bone for a tropical adventure. In this show, you will learn how opening a book can open your imagination and take you on an incredible journey. A special book can paint a picture in your mind, introduce you to new ideas, and maybe even change your life! In this highly participatory program, T-Bone will whisk you away on a fun-filled tropical adventure with the use of songs, stories, instruments, games and visual aids.

July 12 Ed Popielarczyk presents: Ed Popielarczyk’s Comedy Magic ShowMy name is Ed Popielarczyk. I am a professional magician, balloon sculptor, flea circus ringmaster, and storyteller. I have been entertaining children and family audiences for over 30 years. My magic show is a comedy show that uses a lot of audience participation. The kids are the stars because they make the magic happen. I usually have lots of trouble! I don’t just “do a trick” I tell a story that revolves around each trick. It may be a short story or a longer one, but each story helps to bring the trick together. Every child who comes on “stage” to be a helper receives a souvenir! The show is appropriate for ages three and up. I hope to see you there!!!

July 19 Kindness with Terry A La Berry and FriendsGiven our stressful world, we would like to suggest just a little extra kindness can go a long way to getting along with each other. We feel that even if it’s just for an hour, it’s great to let kids just be kids. Terry A La Berry and Friends will provide an hour of interactive positive messages for children and their families through song and dance.

July 26 The Toe Jam Puppet BandFormed in 2000, the Toe Jam Puppet Band offers a special brand of hands-on children’s entertainment that grown-ups can also enjoy. The dynamic group is great with kids, but best when parents are having fun with the little ones. The performances are very active, encouraging kids and parents to dance along with the band as they entertain with a unique combination of original songs, puppetry, storytelling and just plain old good fun. For kids of all ages!

August 2 Little Red Wagon presents: Cleo’s Egyptian TaleUniversity of New Hampshire’s Little Red Wagon, the longest running nonprofit, children’s theatre tour in the U.S. will be presenting ‘Cleo’s Egyptian Tail’. Go along with Cleo on an Egyptian journey to save her kidnapped sister Furiah. Help her cross the Nile, making her way through the desert and past the Sphinx, whose riddle helps Cleo rescue her sister. On this unexpected quest, Cleo crosses paths with a variety of creatures who teach her important lessons about acceptance and friendship.

August 9 Annie & Safari Bob of the Natural Wonder Band presents: Garden Party Annie and Safari Bob of the Natural Wonder Band invite all to a musical “Garden Party” this summer! Get ready for songs, dances, jokes and puppets featuring birds, bunnies, bees, flowers, turtles, and trees. Come make the green scene and party hearty!

Plan for an hour of fun as we cover the 7 Leave No Trace Principals through conversation, demonstration and games! This is a great activity to encourage and empower users as stewards of our beloved public spaces.

July 5 Tom Stankus as T-Bone presents: T-Bone’s Tropical Adventure Spend an imaginary day with T-Bone for a tropical adventure. In this show, you will learn how opening a book can open your imagination and take you on an incredible journey. A special book can paint a picture in your mind, introduce you to new ideas, and maybe even change your life! In this highly participatory program, T-Bone will whisk you away on a fun-filled tropical adventure with the use of songs, stories, instruments, games and visual aids.

July 12 Ed Popielarczyk presents: Ed Popielarczyk’s Comedy Magic ShowMy name is Ed Popielarczyk. I am a professional magician, balloon sculptor, flea circus ringmaster, and storyteller. I have been entertaining children and family audiences for over 30 years. My magic show is a comedy show that uses a lot of audience participation. The kids are the stars because they make the magic happen. I usually have lots of trouble! I don’t just “do a trick” I tell a story that revolves around each trick. It may be a short story or a longer one, but each story helps to bring the trick together. Every child who comes on “stage” to be a helper receives a souvenir! The show is appropriate for ages three and up. I hope to see you there!!!

July 19 Kindness with Terry A La Berry and FriendsGiven our stressful world, we would like to suggest just a little extra kindness can go a long way to getting along with each other. We feel that even if it’s just for an hour, it’s great to let kids just be kids. Terry A La Berry and Friends will provide an hour of interactive positive messages for children and their families through song and dance.

July 26 The Toe Jam Puppet BandFormed in 2000, the Toe Jam Puppet Band offers a special brand of hands-on children’s entertainment that grown-ups can also enjoy. The dynamic group is great with kids, but best when parents are having fun with the little ones. The performances are very active, encouraging kids and parents to dance along with the band as they entertain with a unique combination of original songs, puppetry, storytelling and just plain old good fun. For kids of all ages!

August 2 Little Red Wagon presents: Cleo’s Egyptian TaleUniversity of New Hampshire’s Little Red Wagon, the longest running nonprofit, children’s theatre tour in the U.S. will be presenting ‘Cleo’s Egyptian Tail’. Go along with Cleo on an Egyptian journey to save her kidnapped sister Furiah. Help her cross the Nile, making her way through the desert and past the Sphinx, whose riddle helps Cleo rescue her sister. On this unexpected quest, Cleo crosses paths with a variety of creatures who teach her important lessons about acceptance and friendship.

August 9 Annie & Safari Bob of the Natural Wonder Band presents: Garden Party Annie and Safari Bob of the Natural Wonder Band invite all to a musical “Garden Party” this summer! Walk Around the ParkThursday May 9 through June 27, 2019 from 9:30 am -10:30 am

As we welcome the Spring we will once again be holding our Walk Around the Park. The walks will be held on Thursday mornings from 9:30 am – 10:30 am. These walking sessions are part of Stanley Park’s Health Initiative to provide a beautiful environment in which to get some exercise, while meeting our staff and learning the history about various sites around the park. All abilities are welcome and group ability level will determine walk route. Possible routes will be within the main areas of the park and/or the Wildlife Sanctuary. Walking shoes are recommended. The walks will meet outside the Westfield Bank Children’s Pavilion (“B”).

Wheel WalkJUNE 8, 2019 from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon

The Wheel Walk is our endeavor to bring awareness to “accessibility for ALL”, Stanley Park’s ongoing initiative. The event is a 1-mile walk through Stanley Park’s accessible paths, designed to accommodate everyone with or without wheels. This includes those in wheel chairs, walkers, strollers and those folks who support accessibility. The Wheel Walk is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Registration starts at 9:00 am at the Beveridge Pavilion. The walk, starting and ending at the Beveridge Pavilion, will begin promptly at 10:00 am. Following the walk is a picnic in the Beveridge Pavilion for all registrants. Form a team and get coworkers, friends, and family involved. We encourage individuals and teams to collect pledges so your participation can make the most impact. Registration, sponsor, and pledge forms can be found at www.stanleypark.org. Proceeds from the Wheel Walk will be directed to promoting and expanding “accessibility for ALL” at Stanley Park.

Run Stanley 5k OCTOBER 6, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.

Join us for a great cause on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 10:00 am at Stanley Park. Stanley Park and the Run Stanley Race Committee chair, Vanessa Diana, with the help and support from many volunteers from Westfield State University and the community, will be hosting our 7th Run Stanley. This event includes a 5k trail run/walk, a 5k K9 trail run/walk , our Munchkin Run hosted by Dunkin’ Donuts, and The Stanley Stroll, a 1-mile non-competitive walk. The race will help to raise funds for the overall care of the Frank Stanley Beveridge Wildlife Sanctuary, and is the final race in the Westfield 350th Race Series. Along with the festivities for the Westfield 350th Race Series, we will also award the Stanley Cup Trophy for best school spirit! Please join the community of runners, walkers, hikers, dog owners, nature lovers and mountain bikers who love Stanley Park and want to improve the safety and accessibility of its wildlife trails. May 19 - Sunday - “Spring Wildflowers” with Dave Lovejoy 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. This casual walk will go through several of the habitats in the Sanctuary along the Little River and will focus on wildflowers, many of which will be in full bloom around this time. Both native and naturalized species will be observed with the possibility of seeing about 30 species. A field guide might be helpful to have along, but is certainly not necessary.

Dave Lovejoy is a professor of Biology at Westfield State University and is the Treasurer of the Springfield Naturalists’ Club. He is the Author of “The Vascular Flora of Springfield, Massachusetts” which was published in 2008 by the Springfield Science Museum.

August 31 - Saturday - “Leave No Trace” with the Appalachian Mountain Club 12:00 noonDo you enjoy the outdoors and want to learn more about how to protect the outdoor places you love? Join us for a Leave No Trace Workshop, led by the Appalachian Mountain Club, focusing on fostering stewardship through our own practices in the outdoors. We will spend an hour hiking on the beautiful trails in Stanley Park, periodically stopping along the way to discuss the 7 principals of Leave No Trace. This is an interactive course, with users encouraged to bring fresh perspectives and questions for conversation surrounding sustainable habits in the outdoors.

September 22 - Sunday - “Fantastic Fungi” with the Pioneer Valley Mycological Association 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.This slow-paced walk on the trails of Stanley Park will focus on the many mushrooms we may find in the early fall. Members of the PVMA will discuss the interconnected relationships between fungi and forests, mushroom characteristics and features, and the role of individuals in the scientific study of fungi. No prior mushroom knowledge is necessary!

September 29 - Sunday - “Trees and Shrubs” with Dave Lovejoy 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.Many of the common trees and shrubs of southern New England can be easily seen along the trails in the Sanctuary along the Little River. We will focus on a dozen or so of these woody plants learning how to recognize them and distinguish them from similar species. Some late season wildflowers will also be seen.

Homeward Vets Donation DriveMAY 4, 2019 from 8:00 am – 12:00 noon

Save the Date!! HELP FILL A SOLDIER’S HOME Stanley Park will be hosting a donation drive for the Homeward Vets Organization on May 4, 2019 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. Homeward Vets, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that helps to provide home furnishings to previously homeless veterans who are transitioning into permanent housing and they rely solely on commercial contributions and donations. Homeward Vets is looking to collect small household items for veterans to set up their permanent homes. They are looking for dinnerware, cookware, and small appliances such as toasters, microwaves, toaster ovens and coffee makers just to name a few. Cash donations will also be accepted and will be used to purchase gift cards for Big Y and Stop & Shop for groceries. “SPIN, POP, BOOM!” - Presented by Mad Science of Western New England: July 24thThis show illustrates several very visual scientific effects. We perform experiments that demonstrate the effect of centripetal force. Glass flasks are dropped and “magically” saved by the principal of angular momentum. We use chemicals reactions to create a Genie-in-a-Bottle and an eruption of foam! Heat and pressure are used to create a rainbow effect in a series of flasks! We discuss sound & resonance & produce cool sounds in our versions of the Didgeridoo and an awesome Mad Science pipe organ!

In a collaborative effort between Stanley Park, Westfield State University, the Pioneer Valley Mycological Association, the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Greater Westfield Community, six Nature Workshops will be conducted in the 229-acre Wildlife Sanctuary at Stanley Park this season. We hope you take advantage of these opportunities to enjoy nature’s beauty.

The walks and workshops will meet at the main entrance sign to the Frank Stanley Beveridge Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary located across from the recreation field, and will cancel if there is heavy rain. Wear hiking attire, sturdy boots/shoes, bring water, your field guides, binoculars and camera if you wish.

May 4 - Saturday - “Enjoy the Birds of Spring” with Janice Zepko 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. This workshop will focus on finding and identifying birds by sight and sound. We expect to encounter many species, including Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole, and several species of warbler. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Janice Zepko has a master’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation from the University of Massachusetts. She is active in the Allen Bird Club of Springfield, serving as Field Trip and Publications Chair and participating in a variety of annual censuses that monitor bird migration and breeding populations.

May 12 - Sunday - “Nesting Birds and Tropical Migrants” with Seth Kellogg 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.Join the group for a relaxing walk on Mother’s Day. We will pass through a variety of habitats in the sanctuary during the height of spring migration, stopping to enjoy both resident songbirds and tropical migrants as they feed and sing. We will encounter as many as 50 species, including thrushes, vireos, and warblers. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Seth Kellogg has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Massachusetts. He was president of the Allen Bird Club of Springfield, and continues to be active with the Club, serving as Field Trip and Publications Chair since 1995. He is an avid hawk watcher and was a longtime editor of the Hawk Migration Report for NorthEast Hawk Watch.

Stanley Park is open to the public with no admission fee. The season runs from the first Saturday in May to the last Sunday in November. The park opens at 7:00 a.m., closing times posted daily at Gates 1 & 2. (Approximately ½ hours prior to dusk)

The Wheel Walk is our endeavor to bring awareness to “accessibility for ALL”, Stanley Park’s ongoing initiative. The event is a 1-mile walk through Stanley Park’s accessible paths, designed to accommodate everyone with or without wheels. Run Stanley 5k OCTOBER 6, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.

Join us for a great cause on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 10:00 am at Stanley Park. Stanley Park and the Run Stanley Race Committee chair, Vanessa Diana, with the help and support from many volunteers from Westfield State University and the community, will be hosting our 7th Run Stanley. This event includes a 5k trail run/walk, a 5k K9 trail run/walk , our Munchkin Run hosted by Dunkin’ Donuts, and The Stanley Stroll, a 1-mile non-competitive walk. The race will help to raise funds for the overall care of the Frank Stanley Beveridge Wildlife Sanctuary, and is the final race in the Westfield 350th Race Series. Along with the festivities for the Westfield 350th Race Series, we will also award the Stanley Cup Trophy for best school spirit! May 19 - Sunday - “Spring Wildflowers” with Dave Lovejoy 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. This casual walk will go through several of the habitats in the Sanctuary along the Little River and will focus on wildflowers, many of which will be in full bloom around this time. Both native and naturalized species will be observed with the possibility of seeing about 30 species. A field guide might be helpful to have along, but is certainly not necessary.

Dave Lovejoy is a professor of Biology at Westfield State University and is the Treasurer of the Springfield Naturalists’ Club. He is the Author of “The Vascular Flora of Springfield, Massachusetts” which was published in 2008 by the Springfield Science Museum.

August 31 - Saturday - “Leave No Trace” with the Appalachian Mountain Club 12:00 noonDo you enjoy the outdoors and want to learn more about how to protect the outdoor places you love? Join us for a Leave No Trace Workshop, led by the Appalachian Mountain Club, focusing on fostering stewardship through our own practices in the outdoors. We will spend an hour hiking on the beautiful trails in Stanley Park, periodically stopping along the way to discuss the 7 principals of Leave No Trace. This is an interactive course, with users encouraged to bring fresh perspectives and questions for conversation surrounding sustainable habits in the outdoors.

September 22 - Sunday - “Fantastic Fungi” with the Pioneer Valley Mycological Association 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.This slow-paced walk on the trails of Stanley Park will focus on the many mushrooms we may find in the early fall. Members of the PVMA will discuss the interconnected relationships between fungi and forests, mushroom characteristics and features, and the role of individuals in the scientific study of fungi. No prior mushroom knowledge is necessary!

September 29 - Sunday - “Trees and Shrubs” with Dave Lovejoy 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.Many of the common trees and shrubs of southern New England can be easily seen along the trails in the Sanctuary along the Little River. We will focus on a dozen or so of these woody plants learning how to recognize them and distinguish them from similar species. Some late season wildflowers will also be seen.

Save the Date!! HELP FILL A SOLDIER’S HOME Stanley Park will be hosting a donation drive for the Homeward Vets Organization on May 4, 2019 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. Homeward Vets, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that helps to provide home furnishings to previously homeless veterans who are transitioning into permanent housing and they rely solely on commercial contributions and donations. Homeward Vets is looking to collect small household items for veterans to set up their permanent homes. They are looking for dinnerware, cookware, and small appliances such as toasters, microwaves, toaster ovens and coffee makers just to name a few. Cash donations will also be accepted and will be used to purchase gift cards for Big Y and Stop & Shop for groceries. “SPIN, POP, BOOM!” - Presented by Mad Science of Western New England: July 24thThis show illustrates several very visual scientific effects. We perform experiments that demonstrate the effect of centripetal force. Glass flasks are dropped and “magically” saved by the principal of angular momentum. We use chemicals reactions to create a Genie-in-a-Bottle and an eruption of foam! Heat and pressure are used to create a rainbow effect in a series of flasks! We discuss sound & resonance & produce cool sounds in our versions of the Didgeridoo and an awesome Mad Science pipe organ!

Nature WorkshopsWorkshops are free of charge

In a collaborative effort between Stanley Park, Westfield State University, the Pioneer Valley Mycological Association, the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Greater Westfield Community, six Nature Workshops will be conducted in the 229-acre Wildlife Sanctuary at Stanley Park this season. We hope you take advantage of these opportunities to enjoy nature’s beauty.

The walks and workshops will meet at the main entrance sign to the Frank Stanley Beveridge Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary located across from the recreation field, and will cancel if there is heavy rain. Wear hiking attire, sturdy boots/shoes, bring water, your field guides, binoculars and camera if you wish.

May 4 - Saturday - “Enjoy the Birds of Spring” with Janice Zepko 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. This workshop will focus on finding and identifying birds by sight and sound. We expect to encounter many species, including Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole, and several species of warbler. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Janice Zepko has a master’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation from the University of Massachusetts. She is active in the Allen Bird Club of Springfield, serving as Field Trip and Publications Chair and participating in a variety of annual censuses that monitor bird migration and breeding populations.

May 12 - Sunday - “Nesting Birds and Tropical Migrants” with Seth Kellogg 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.Join the group for a relaxing walk on Mother’s Day. We will pass through a variety of habitats in the sanctuary during the height of spring migration, stopping to enjoy both resident songbirds and tropical migrants as they feed and sing. We will encounter as many as 50 species, including thrushes, vireos, and warblers. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Seth Kellogg has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Massachusetts. He was president of the Allen Bird Club of Springfield, and continues to be active with the Club, serving as Field Trip and Publications Chair since 1995. He is an avid hawk watcher and was a longtime editor of the Hawk Migration Report for NorthEast Hawk Watch.

Stanley Park is open to the public with no admission fee. The season runs from the first Saturday in May to the last Sunday in November. The park opens at 7:00 a.m., closing times posted daily at Gates 1 & 2. (Approximately ½ hours prior to dusk)

As we welcome the Spring we will once again be holding our Walk Around the Park. The walks will be held on Thursday mornings from 9:30 am – 10:30 am. These walking sessions are part of Stanley Park’s Health Initiative to provide a beautiful environment in which to get some exercise, while meeting our staff and learning the history about various sites around the park. “SPIN, POP, BOOM!” - Presented by Mad Science of Western New England: July 24thThis show illustrates several very visual scientific effects. We perform experiments that demonstrate the effect of centripetal force. Glass flasks are dropped and “magically” saved by the principal of angular momentum. We use chemicals reactions to create a Genie-in-a-Bottle and an eruption of foam! Heat and pressure are used to create a rainbow effect in a series of flasks! We discuss sound & resonance & produce cool sounds in our versions of the Didgeridoo and an awesome Mad Science pipe organ!

In a collaborative effort between Stanley Park, Westfield State University, the Pioneer Valley Mycological Association, the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Greater Westfield Community, six Nature Workshops will be conducted in the 229-acre Wildlife Sanctuary at Stanley Park this season. We hope you take advantage of these opportunities to enjoy nature’s beauty.

The walks and workshops will meet at the main entrance sign to the Frank Stanley Beveridge Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary located across from the recreation field, and will cancel if there is heavy rain. Wear hiking attire, sturdy boots/shoes, bring water, your field guides, binoculars and camera if you wish.

May 4 - Saturday - “Enjoy the Birds of Spring” with Janice Zepko 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. This workshop will focus on finding and identifying birds by sight and sound. We expect to encounter many species, including Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole, and several species of warbler. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Janice Zepko has a master’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation from the University of Massachusetts. She is active in the Allen Bird Club of Springfield, serving as Field Trip and Publications Chair and participating in a variety of annual censuses that monitor bird migration and breeding populations.

May 12 - Sunday - “Nesting Birds and Tropical Migrants” with Seth Kellogg 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.Join the group for a relaxing walk on Mother’s Day. We will pass through a variety of habitats in the sanctuary during the height of spring migration, stopping to enjoy both resident songbirds and tropical migrants as they feed and sing. We will encounter as many as 50 species, including thrushes, vireos, and warblers. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Seth Kellogg has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Massachusetts. He was president of the Allen Bird Club of Springfield, and continues to be active with the Club, serving as Field Trip and Publications Chair since 1995. He is an avid hawk watcher and was a longtime editor of the Hawk Migration Report for NorthEast Hawk Watch.

Yoga classes are coming back for the Spring for eight sessions! Starting on Wednesday evenings, May 8th through June 26th 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm on the Acre Lawn, next to the Pavilion Annex. Certified instructor, Jacqueline Funaro, will lead the yoga classes. This class is for all levels of yoga practitioners. The poses are foundational, and modifications are always available. As a class we will harness the power of our breath in alignment with the movement of our bodies

Walk Around the ParkThursday May 9 through June 27, 2019 from 9:30 am -10:30 am

As we welcome the Spring we will once again be holding our Walk Around the Park. The walks will be held on Thursday mornings from 9:30 am – 10:30 am. These walking sessions are part of Stanley Park’s Health Initiative to provide a beautiful environment in which to get some exercise, while meeting our staff and learning the history about various sites around the park. All abilities are welcome and group ability level will determine walk route. Possible routes will be within the main areas of the park and/or the Wildlife Sanctuary. Walking shoes are recommended. The walks will meet outside the Westfield Bank Children’s Pavilion (“B”).

Wheel WalkJUNE 8, 2019 from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon

The Wheel Walk is our endeavor to bring awareness to “accessibility for ALL”, Stanley Park’s ongoing initiative. The event is a 1-mile walk through Stanley Park’s accessible paths, designed to accommodate everyone with or without wheels. This includes those in wheel chairs, walkers, strollers and those folks who support accessibility. The Wheel Walk is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Registration starts at 9:00 am at the Beveridge Pavilion. The walk, starting and ending at the Beveridge Pavilion, will begin promptly at 10:00 am. Following the walk is a picnic in the Beveridge Pavilion for all registrants. Form a team and get coworkers, friends, and family involved. We encourage individuals and teams to collect pledges so your participation can make the most impact. Registration, sponsor, and pledge forms can be found at www.stanleypark.org. Proceeds from the Wheel Walk will be directed to promoting and expanding “accessibility for ALL” at Stanley Park.

Run Stanley 5k OCTOBER 6, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.

Join us for a great cause on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 10:00 am at Stanley Park. Stanley Park and the Run Stanley Race Committee chair, Vanessa Diana, with the help and support from many volunteers from Westfield State University and the community, will be hosting our 7th Run Stanley. This event includes a 5k trail run/walk, a 5k K9 trail run/walk , our Munchkin Run hosted by Dunkin’ Donuts, and The Stanley Stroll, a 1-mile non-competitive walk. The race will help to raise funds for the overall care of the Frank Stanley Beveridge Wildlife Sanctuary, and is the final race in the Westfield 350th Race Series. Along with the festivities for the Westfield 350th Race Series, we will also award the Stanley Cup Trophy for best school spirit! May 19 - Sunday - “Spring Wildflowers” with Dave Lovejoy 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. This casual walk will go through several of the habitats in the Sanctuary along the Little River and will focus on wildflowers, many of which will be in full bloom around this time. Both native and naturalized species will be observed with the possibility of seeing about 30 species. A field guide might be helpful to have along, but is certainly not necessary.

Dave Lovejoy is a professor of Biology at Westfield State University and is the Treasurer of the Springfield Naturalists’ Club. He is the Author of “The Vascular Flora of Springfield, Massachusetts” which was published in 2008 by the Springfield Science Museum.

August 31 - Saturday - “Leave No Trace” with the Appalachian Mountain Club 12:00 noonDo you enjoy the outdoors and want to learn more about how to protect the outdoor places you love? Join us for a Leave No Trace Workshop, led by the Appalachian Mountain Club, focusing on fostering stewardship through our own practices in the outdoors. We will spend an hour hiking on the beautiful trails in Stanley Park, periodically stopping along the way to discuss the 7 principals of Leave No Trace. This is an interactive course, with users encouraged to bring fresh perspectives and questions for conversation surrounding sustainable habits in the outdoors.

September 22 - Sunday - “Fantastic Fungi” with the Pioneer Valley Mycological Association 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.This slow-paced walk on the trails of Stanley Park will focus on the many mushrooms we may find in the early fall. Members of the PVMA will discuss the interconnected relationships between fungi and forests, mushroom characteristics and features, and the role of individuals in the scientific study of fungi. No prior mushroom knowledge is necessary!

September 29 - Sunday - “Trees and Shrubs” with Dave Lovejoy 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.Many of the common trees and shrubs of southern New England can be easily seen along the trails in the Sanctuary along the Little River. We will focus on a dozen or so of these woody plants learning how to recognize them and distinguish them from similar species. Some late season wildflowers will also be seen.

Homeward Vets Donation DriveMAY 4, 2019 from 8:00 am – 12:00 noon

Save the Date!! HELP FILL A SOLDIER’S HOME Stanley Park will be hosting a donation drive for the Homeward Vets Organization on May 4, 2019 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. Homeward Vets, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that helps to provide home furnishings to previously homeless veterans who are transitioning into permanent housing and they rely solely on commercial contributions and donations. Homeward Vets is looking to collect small household items for veterans to set up their permanent homes. They are looking for dinnerware, cookware, and small appliances such as toasters, microwaves, toaster ovens and coffee makers just to name a few. Cash donations will also be accepted and will be used to purchase gift cards for Big Y and Stop & Shop for groceries.
