BRASS BOUND ADJUSTABLE STANDARD STOCK (3 ½ x 1 3/8”) SMALL STOCK (2 1/8 x 1 1/16”)

This mahogany level shows up reasonably often. It is valued a lot less then the # 98 rosewood level shown below.

Unfortunately a lot of sellers will advertise mahogany as rosewood. Auction $ 30-60 Dealers + 50-100

Stanley 98 is probably one of the most attractive Stanley levels ever made. 6” is rare. Expect to pay up to $ 1,000 for a G+ example. 9” will set you back $ 300-500. 12” & 18” can

be had for $ 200-300. Some dealer prices are higher.

Same as # 93 above but with added brass lips on cut-out and plumb port holes. Auction $ 50-100, dealers asking

$ 100-200. Note the large price difference in the original catalogue price between #93 and # 95!

Same as # 93 but with a smaller stock. Shows up a lot less than the 93. No brass trimmings to ports. G examples sell

for $ 80-120, G+/F models can fetch $ 150-250

Stanley 45 Combination Plane offered 1883 - 1962

10 1/2 - 11 1/2" long with 23 cutters after 1922. Cutter sets range from 18 to 22 for earlier models.

Full set of 23 SW cutters $ 70-120. (The slitter

counts as cutter). Cutters came either in a single

wooden box with cardboard sleeve or in two

separate wooden boxes. Good labels add to value.

These parts are often missing and will set you back $ 10-25 each!

Stanley A 45 Aluminium Combination Plane offered 1915 - 1935

11 1/2" long with 23 cutters not listed in the 1923 catalogue but available

Same as No 45 but aluminium. This was the first of the aluminium Stanley planes, available 10 years before it was

first listed in a catalogue. The plane is noticeably lighter then the cast iron model. If you're not sure you can use a

magnet to check. Aluminium is not magnetic. The finish is always duller than the nickel plating on the

ordinary 45. SW models are marked A45, older planes were marked 45

only - see down. We have found several of these planes sold as normal 45s. One came in a wooden Stanley box

with a red A sticker pasted on the label. Plane and cam rest are aluminium, rest not.

Arguably the most versatile Stanley block plane. The low angle combined with a skewed cutter makes it ideal for work on

cross-grain or end grain. The detachable side plate changes the tool into a rabbet plane.

The side plate is frequently missing.

Stanley used the size of the cutter as sub-model numbers i.e. 144 1/4, 144 3/8 and 144 1/2. The 1/4" model is hard to find, the 1/2” is fairly scarce, the 3/8" shows up most often. Sizes

are marked on the bottom of the skate on some planes.
