Laser Tag

February 14, 2015

17 Participants

What kind of fun is more related to optics than laser tag? I sure can’t think of

anything right now, so that’s why we treated these lucky members of the

Stanford Optical Society to a few rounds of this most illustrious activity.

SUPR Reunion BBQ

July 10, 2015

60 Participants

Sometimes, when one partakes in an experience that is so mind blowing that it

cannot be expressed in words to those who were not present, a lasting impact is

made on that individual. They quickly realize that they cannot relate to anyone

who is unaware that such greatness exists in the world, that such meticulous

event planning is even possible. It is no surprise, then, that after experiencing the

2015 Stanford University Photonics Retreat, all of the attendants coalesced

together, bonded by the power of shared experience. However, there were also

those who were lost to the winds, who lost contact, who felt trapped with no

means to recollect their experiences with anyone who will understand. We

understand the anguish that must have been felt by these people, and so

organized a tremendous gathering to reunite them with the participants in the

greatest experience of their lives.

Bubbly Happy Hour

August 14, 2015

25 Participants

In an effort to make all of our events unique in some way, the use of themed

happy hours has been crucial. The first such happy hour was carbonation themed,

featuring a large variety of drinks that were carbonated at the event using a

special attachment to a CO2 tank.

Room Escape

September 5, 2015

11 Participants

Room escapes have gained popularity in recent years as an excellent activity for

bringing groups of people together using frantic, high-stress situations. In an

effort to instill a sense of camaraderie to the Optical Society, we decided to make

the trek to San Francisco to experience the Puzzle Room from Real Escape Games.

Unfortunately, we were unable to complete the last puzzle before time ran out,

so the explosives in the room detonated, and all of the participants were killed.

Miracle Berry Happy Hour

November 11, 2015

40 Participants

Every once in a while, someone hands you a red tablet and says “here, try this”,

and you proceed to have one of the most amazing sensory experience of your life.

In order to bring this magic to the Optical Society, we hosted a happy hour based

around the miracle berry – a small tablet composed of corn syrup and freeze-

dried special berries that cause any sort of acidity present in food to be

experienced as a sweet taste. People were brought together to experience the

joys of drinking pure lemon juice and vinegar.

Winter Happy Hour

January 22, 2016

40 Participants

Sometimes there’s a recipe that you really want to try, but it is very difficult to

scale for a small number of people. In order to alleviate this issue, we organized a

happy hour featuring a variety of homemade attractions, including spiced cider,

marshmallows, hot chocolate, and hard cider.

Workshop on Scientific Computing with Python

Nicholas Tezak and Ryan Hamerly

Stanford University

February 18, 2015

Stanford University

Stanford, CA

~20 participants

In this workshop, the presenters trained attendees about various usages of Python

scripting for scientific computations, data manipulations and taking notes

alongside the results, data plotting methods, and creating interactive GUIs. The

attendees benefited from this workshop a lot in terms of not only the technical

usages of python but also non-technical aspects of it. The various ways of

optimizing python algorithms were also shown, which made the workshop more

applicable overall since this feature of python is what makes it more advantageous

against the other less efficient programming languages.

Summer Holography Class for RISE - 7/29/15 - 4 volunteers, 30 students

The RISE (Raising Interest in Science and Engineering) Summer Internship Program for HS Students is sponsored by the Office of Science Outreach. It’s an intensive 7-week summer program for low income students interested in science, engineering, math, computer science, or psychology. We worked with the program to provide a half-day devoted to encouraging students interest in optics and photonics. Interactive demonstrations included a holography workshop where students made their own holograms, measuring a hair’s width using diffraction and building microscopes to learn about ray optics.

Escondido Science Night 2015 ~ 3/11/15 - 10 volunteers, 100s of attendees

For the third year, we have been involved in Science Night at Escondido Elementary School. We were given space to set up some of our interactive demos, primarily the laser maze and laser harp, which the event participants (children and their families, as well as members of the local community) were able to experience as an introduction to optics. While they waited, volunteers provided explanations of the demos, trivia, and answered questions. It was the first use of our laser maze with modifications to aid in ease of transport and setup.

Apollo Engineering Day - 10/23/15 2 volunteers, 300 students

Apollo is a continuation high school on the east side of San José that services disadvantaged students. Before attending Apollo, these students were considered high school drop-out students and may not have had any exposure to engineering as a potential profession. Engineering Day invites local engineering businesses and groups to man booths providing information about different engineering careers. We brought along our demos to encourage excitement in optical engineering, and spoke with students about photonics and pursuing higher education in engineering in general.
