© Brain Wrinkles
• Life in Europe changed dramatically from 1450 to
1700.
• New inventions and ideas led to the Age of
Exploration.
• There are several major reasons for exploration
during this time period.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Europeans desired access to natural resources (like silk
and spices) found in Asia.
• For centuries, European traders had to travel to ports
along the Mediterranean Sea in order to meet Asian
merchants and purchase their goods.
• Goods brought over land from China and India were
expensive, so Europeans decided to look for a new,
shorter route around Africa to get to Asia.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Beginning in the 1400s, European nations competed
with each other to claim & explore new lands.
• While expanding their empires, these countries
improved their economic strength by finding valuable
natural resources in the new lands.
• European countries established colonies in these
places, which provided new markets for their goods.
© Brain Wrinkles
• During this time period, the predominant religion
in Europe was Christianity (in particular,
Catholicism).
• European rulers wanted to spread their religion to
other parts of the world.
• They sent explorers out to spread Christianity and
to diminish Muslim influence.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Many of Europe’s explorations were for economic
reasons.
• Europeans knew that they could make a lot of
money as traders if they could get Asian goods for
a cheaper price.
• Explorers also desired to find gold and other
riches in the new lands.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Many explorers were driven by personal ambition
for glory and honor.
• They wanted the fame that came along with
discovering new lands because they knew their
monarchs would be very appreciative.
• These men desired to be national heroes.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Prince Henry the Navigator was a Portuguese prince and
naval commander who founded a navigation school for
sailors.
• Students learned navigation, astronomy, and
cartography (mapmaking); Henry’s efforts advanced
what Europeans knew about these topics.
• He paid for more than fifty expeditions to the west coast of
Africa.
• Henry wanted to establish Portuguese colonies and to
break the Muslim hold on trade routes.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Prince Henry understood his country’s
dependence on the sea and eagerly financed
exploration ventures.
• He hired mapmakers to create detailed maps of
new explorations.
• Henry also employed shipbuilders who developed
a small, light sailing ship called the caravel.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Beginning in 1415, Portugal led the world in sea
exploration.
• For nearly 100 years, the Portuguese explored the west
coast of Africa and established trade in riches and labor.
• In 1497, Vasco da Gama sailed around the Cape of Good
Hope at the southern tip of Africa and continued on to
India.
• His crew was the first group of Europeans to reach
India by sea.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Next, the Portuguese established settlements in
Brazil in South America.
• Brazil became Portugal’s most profitable colony
as it provided gold and sugar for the country.
• Brazil remained a Portuguese colony until 1822.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Over the following decades, Portuguese sailors
continued to explore the coasts and islands of
east Asia and Africa.
• Portugal was more interested in trade than in
taking over a land and its people
• By 1571, a string of trading posts connected
Portugal with Africa, India, the south Pacific
islands, and Japan.
© Brain Wrinkles
• Spain’s exploration and colonization was led by the
voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492.
• Columbus, an Italian, was given ships and sailors by the
Spanish monarchy.
• His goal was to find a quick route to Asia through the
Atlantic Ocean.
• Columbus didn’t make it to Asia, but actually landed in
the Bahamas.
• Exploration of this New World brought great wealth to
Spain.© Brain Wrinkles
• In 1519, Spain financed a voyage of Ferdinand
Magellan, a Portuguese explorer.
• Magellan sailed south and west around the tip of
South America and finally reached the Philippine
Islands after 18 months at sea.
• Magellan died there, but his crew returned to Spain
after sailing around the world and proved that the
earth was round.
© Brain Wrinkles
• The Spanish empire was one of the largest in history.
• Spain claimed huge areas of North and South America and
established colonies there and ruled parts of them for three
hundred years.
• Spain also established a few small settlements along the
north African coast to protect its trade interests.
• The empire stretched to Asia, where Spain controlled the
Philippines until almost the 20th century.
© Brain Wrinkles
• The British empire was the largest in history.
• At its peak in the 1900s, it controlled one-fifth of the world’s
land with colonies in Canada, Australia, India, eastern Africa,
and numerous islands across the world.
• In the 1920s, one-fourth of the world’s population was under
British control.
• It was said that “the sun never sets on the British empire”
because it was always daylight at some location in the British
empire.

• England established its colonies for
mercantilism, an economic policy where the
colonies helped the mother country by providing
natural resources and a market for goods
produced in the mother country.
• British explorers hoped to find raw materials that
they could use to manufacture goods in their own
country.

• In 1770, British explorer James Cook discovered
Australia.
• The island soon became the new location of British
colonization because it offered many benefits to the
empire.
• Australia’s location in the Far East made it a strategic
spot for a Royal Navy port.
• It also made for easy access to Eastern trade for English
merchants.© Brain Wrinkles
• Australia’s most beneficial reason for colonization
occurred in 1788 when Britain shipped hundreds of
prisoners to the territory and forced them to create a new
British colony.
• England’s jails were extremely overcrowded, so the
country used Australia as a penal colony and shipped
convicts there to perform manual labor.
• Eventually, the convicts were able to earn their freedom
and stayed in Australia.

• A British governor ruled each colony and the island became
an established European country.

• Imperialism is when a country increases it power
and wealth by acquiring new lands under its
control.
• The end of the 19th century is called the “Age of
Imperialism” because that is when European
countries competed for land and power
throughout Asia and Africa.
© Brain Wrinkles
• France, Great Britain, and other European countries had
created large worldwide empires and became very
wealthy from the natural resources the new lands
provided.
• Other countries, like Germany and Russia, saw how rich
their neighbors were becoming and wanted to build their
own empires.
• Africa and Asia were two continents the European
countries wanted to exploit for their labor force and
natural resources.© Brain Wrinkles
• Many European countries began aggressively

and gold were found in Africa.
• By the 1880s, Great Britain, France, Germany,
Belgium, Spain, and Portugal all wanted part of
the continent.

• To prevent a European war over Africa, leaders from
fourteen European governments and from the United
States met in Berlin, Germany, in 1884.
• No Africans attended the meeting.
• At the meeting, the European leaders discussed Africa’s
land and how it should be divided.
• This division became known as the “Scramble for
Africa”.

• Rivalries developed as countries scrambled to grab
land and conflicts occurred over control of African
colonies.
• Soon, European countries began to resent and
distrust each other…
• This act of imperialism contributed to the outbreak
