IEEE STANDARDS ASSOCIATION

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) is the power house of the Indian electrical industry set up in 1960

by the Government of India, functions as a National Organization for applied research in electrical power

engineering, assisting the electrical industry in product development and quality assurance. CPRI also

serves as an independent authority for testing and certification of power equipment. CPRI is member of

International bodies such as STL (Short Circuit Testing Liaison) of Europe, DLMS UA, UCA IUG etc., and is

accredited by ASTA, UK, UCA IUG, etc.

CPRI has diversified into consultancy in Utility automation and has been providing consultancy services for

automation of transmission & distribution systems for major utilities in the country. CPRI is empanelled as

SCADA DMS consultant (SDC) and Third Party Independent Energy Auditor (TPIEA) under R-APDRP

schemes.

CPRI has a state of the art Protocol Laboratory which is unique in its kind in this part of the world, which

caters its customers to develop, test and certify protocol related to Substation communications and

Metering as per the latest national and international standards like IEC 61850, IEC 62056 and BIS Indian

Companion Specification which is one among its state of the art facilities.

The IEEE Standards Association, a globally recognized standards-setting body within IEEE, develops

consensus standards through an open process that engages industry and brings together a broad

stakeholder community. IEEE standards set specifications and best practices based on current scientific

and technological knowledge. The IEEE-SA has a portfolio of over 900 active standards and more than 500

standards under development. For more information visit http://standards.ieee.org/. You can also visit us

About IEEE: IEEE, the world's largest technical professional association, is dedicated to advancing

technology for the benefit of humanity. Through its highly cited publications, conferences, technology

standards, and professional and educational activities, IEEE is the trusted voice on a wide variety of areas

ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric

power and consumer electronics. Learn more at http://www.ieee.org.

Smart Grid implementation is gaining lot of attention in India and globally. There are huge investment

happening across the globe to either upgrade existing systems to enable a smarter grid or implement new

and latest technologies in place to ensure a reliable, robust, scalable and efficient grid. The implementation

of the smart grid involves new technologies and systems in the area of Power/Energy, Communication

infrastructure and IT systems. These systems are being implemented in India with huge investment from

both Government as well as private sector to address critical power issues facing the country, including

new generation capacity, focus on renewable energy through solar, wind and small hydro addressing key

technologies spanning power generation, transmission, distribution, automated metering, demand

response, micro grid and related technologies.

The aim of the conference is to highlight the key role played by standards in the area of Smart Grid

technology enablement and deployment. The conference would include expert speakers across the

technology space including key panels discussing the importance of standards to make the

implementation of Smart Grid technology successful and also highlight some of the key local and regional

requirements from India that need to be considered during global standards development. The conference

will cover important standards that address the power/energy generation and transmission,

communication technology standards to make the grid smarter including role of IT software and systems.

Many forums are discussing about various facets of smart grid. Ministry of Power, Government of India has

conceived a “Smart Grid Task Force” and launched the “India Smart Grid Forum” to study and facilitate

smart grid activities. By virtue of its unique position and experience over a decade CPRI along with IEEE

Standards Association finds it important to discuss various aspects of standardisation in the rolling out of

smart grid initiatives. Hence, the need for this International conference on “Standards for Smart Grid

Ecosystem” where key standards related issues will be discussed. IEEE has already come with suites of

standards addressing Smart Grid including the IEEE 2030-2011 which is a guide for Smart Grid

Interoperability of Energy Technology and Information Technology Operation with the Electric Power

System(EPS), End-Use Applications, and Loads.

This event is centred on all Smart Grid technologies, bringing together all stakeholders like utilities,

technology enablers, system integrators, policy makers, service providers, end users etc. It provides

opportunity to researchers to exchange ideas on concept, application, design, statutory compliance and

performance evaluation of prevailing and futuristic technologies and share field experiences. The

conference serves as a platform for Industries to discuss key technology initiatives to enable the

successful deployment of Smart Grid in the country. Official language of this Conference is English.

The key stakeholder for this conference include:

m Corporations across the technology sectors in Power/Energy, Communication and IT

m Electric Utilities

m Government and private research institutes

m Standards Development Organizations

m Industries and Industry consortiums

m Academia

m Government organizations, policy makers and regulatory bodies.

The workshop is aimed at professionals of Electric utilities, Technology and solution providers, Service

providers, Researchers, Academia, Renewable energy industry, Manufacturers, System Integrators,
