OptiMill® HPC end milling cutterThe tool for highly profitableuniversal machining
For highly profitable universal machining, an innovative HPC geometry has been developed specially for applications for milling of structural steel, case hardening steel, tool steel, cast steel and cast iron.
The tool was designed with an unequal helix and an unequal deviation and is cha-racterised by very smooth running, large cutting volumes, process reliability and low stress on the machine even with extreme cutting values.
Plunge and "ramping" processes are enhanced by the larger chip space at the leading end of the grooves.

OptiMill®-Steel-HPC
Solid carbide HPC end millingcutter for steel machining
The unequal deviation of the HPC end mil-ling cutters ensures absolutely smooth run-ning during the machining process. Both higher cutting speeds and larger feed rates are easily possible.
Plunge and ramping processes are enhanced by the larger chip space at the leading end of the grooves.
The HPC end milling cutters are characte-rised by higher performance and reduced stress on the machine.

OptiMill®-Alu
Solid carbide end milling cutterfor machining aluminium
Solid carbide slot end milling cutters are particularly suitable for milling aluminium alloys, plastics, copper alloys and non-ferrous metals.
The unequal deviation of the solid carbide aluminium end milling cutter ensures ab-solutely smooth running during machining. Specially polished grooves prevent sticking of chips and at the same time ensure opti-mised chip removal.
The OptiMill®-Mono for machining aluminium with low silicium completes the programme.

M3094
Shaft made of duplex steelCost-effective machining in duplex steel
The standard solid carbide end milling cutter OptiMill®-Uni-HPC M3094 machines spiral grooves in a shaft made of the duplex steel 1.4462. The shaft is needed to prepare oil bores on a drilling platform. The spiral grooves to be milled have a width of 10 mm and a milling depth of 5 mm. The difficult to machine material is machined at a cutting speed of vc = 40 m/min and a feed per tooth of fz = 0.03 mm. The OptiMill® end milling cutter with its unequal cutting pitch needs 1.5 hours to mill a complete part. This corresponds to a mill-ing length of 30 metres. The tool can reli-ably machine two parts before it reaches the wear limit, which signifies a tool life of 60 metres. The customer was not satisfied with the milling tools from the competition used previously due the heavy formation of burrs after a short time. With the OptiMill® end milling cutter, four times the tool life is achieved to the complete satisfaction of the customer.

Bearing carrierOptimised machining of a bearingcarrier made of AlSi1 through utilization of a solid carbide special form milling cutter
The bearing carrier was initially produced on a machining centre and CNC lathe. The ex-pensive and time intensive internal contour turning was to be developed more economi-cally. Through the development of a special tool it became possible to manufacture the workpiece completely on a machining centre, whereby the turning contour was replaced by a circular milling operation. The machining time was halved and the workpiece can be machined in one clamp-ing. Through this machining strategy the part can be produced with its tight shapes and position tolerances reliably and with high economic efficiency. The requirements on smooth running, high surface quality and shape accuracy for the bearing carrier could be realized on the special milling tool by means of a special uneven spacing, as well as an adjusted grinding strategy and wire eroding.

HingeMachining of an automotivehinge made of St52-3
For the machining of an automotive hinge normally a solid carbide end mill was used. The spherical surface to be created often caused the breakage of tools on the delicate end milling cutter. A solid carbide disc milling cutter was developed that the process could be designed more economi-cally, which facilitated a modification in the machining strategy. A vertical milling operation with an end milling cutter was replaced with a horizontal production process with a disc milling cutter, clamped on a milling cutter arbor. The machining time was reduced by more than 15 %, especially the process reliability, retention of the shape and position tolerances could be revolutionized. The costs could be dras-tically reduced, due to the high process reliability and re-grinding capability for the tools. The customer’s expectancies were far exceeded and the machining strategy could be implemented for additional parts.

Cylinder headExtremely efficient machining a cylinderhead made of aluminium
A special end milling cutter in design of a dovetail milling cutter was developed for the machining of the combustion chamber of a cylinder head made of aluminium. The machining of the combustion chamber is implemented on a quadruple spindled machining centre with a four fluted, 30° twisted solid carbide milling cutter.
Smooth running, form precision, process stability and economic efficiency are in the foreground. Tool life and performance far exceed the expectancies of the customer and generate an economically efficient production process.

Common RailSolid carbide special milling cutter facilitates the machining of the annular groove in a single machining step
A four fluted solid carbide special milling cutter was designed for the machining of the annular groove for a Common Rail housing. The annular groove’s complex de-sign was developed on the tool through a combined grinding and eroding machining. With this process the complete contour is produced in a circular milling process form exactly and reliable in one single machin-ing step. The milling strategy is broken down as in the following: Starting operation over ½ circulation to the depth, one circulation to the depth, ½ circulation as protraction operation.
The tool life of 1,000 to 1,200 annular grooves far exceeds the customer’s ex-pectancies and allows a highly economical machining process.

Machining values: n = 1825 rpm vc = 70 m/min vf = 1,022 mm/min fz = 0.14 mm
Machining time: 3 seconds with a milling length of 50 mm
Tool life: approx. 1000 – 1200 slots, that corres- ponds with a tool life of 50 – 60 m

Machining values for Solid carbide finishing end milling cutter HPCOptiMill®-Uni-HPC-Finish (M3096)
* To achieve better surface finishes, the feed figures must be appropriately reduced. E.g.: Finishing with M3096, Ø20mm in 42CrMo4, ae = 0.2 mm (synchronous milling) Standard figures: 42CrMo4 | vc = 200 m/min. | fz = 0,1 mm | Ra = 1,00 | Rz = 5
Modified figures: 42CrMo4 | vc = 200 m/min. | fz = 0,03 mm | Ra = 0,30 | Rz = 1
