AMREF’s Work in Tanzania
• For more than 55 years, AMREF has partnered with and supported the government, individuals, civil society organizations(CSOs) and communities to address bottlenecks in the health system.
• We focus on women and children through strengthening of community structures and health systems – developing human resources for health in particular using primary health care approach
Understanding the Problem
• In Tanzania and most of sub Saharan Africa about 50% of pregnant women still deliver without the services of a Skilled Birth Attendant(SBA)
• In Tanzania about 7,000 women die every year during child birth and several thousands more are left with chronic disabilities such as obstetric fistula
• There is an acute shortage of nurse midwives especially in rural areas
