Welcome to...


O ne would be forgiven for assuming that tonight’s show is cheesy, pink, escapist joy – it is – but it also has a point far beyond its camp spectacle. On the

surface, Elle Woods appears to be every inch a stereotype of the early-noughties American sweetheart – blonde, beautiful, wealthy – but dig a little deeper and there is more to her than meets the eye.

Following her ex-boyfriend Warner to Harvard Law School to show him she is “serious”, Elle soon realises her true potential, challenging people’s assumptions about appearance and sets out to prove herself to the world. In a modern society, where self-worth is too often judged by your social media presence, the message at the heart of the show is an important one: always be true to yourself. We hope that you leave here this evening humming a tune and with a smile on your face, but maybe also with a little nudge to remember that the cover is not always the book.

Sororities and Fraternities Single sex houses to which students have to apply for membership, with sororities admitting women and fraternities admitting men. Most have a name made up of two or three Greek letters (for example, Alpha Delta Pi and Gamma Phi Beta). In Legally Blonde, Elle is President of the Delta Nu sorority.

Snaps “Snapping” is something many sorority girls do to show their approval for something. Elle and her Delta Nu girls “snap” a lot!

“Less of a Marilyn, more a Jackie...” Warner wants Elle to be more serious, like former First Lady of the United States Jackie Kennedy, rather than blonde bombshell Marilyn Munroe.

The LSATs The Law School Admissions Test is an exam required by all US Law Schools as part of their admissions procedure. It is designed to test reading, comprehension, analytical reasoning and logical reasoning. In order to be considered for Harvard Law, Elle needs a score of more than 174.

Fulbright Programme and Rhodes Scholarship

International scholarship programmes which provide funding to allow exceptional scholars to attend colleges, conduct research or teach abroad. Elle’s Harvard Law classmate Tarquin Pemberton-Smythe has been awarded both.

Fred Segal Sophisticated department store on Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, with a ‘mini-mall’ collection of ultra-hip boutiques. Known for attracting big-name celebrities and producers. Elle explains how she recently talked Beyoncé out of buying a “truly heinous cable-knit tube top” while at the store.

Preppie Slang term for wealthy, elegantly and conservatively dressed American kids, who live exclusive lifestyles. The term is derived from ‘preparatory schools’, the US equivalent to UK elite public schools. Warner and Vivienne are prime examples.

Bend and Snap Serena explains that it is a move invented by the UCLA cheerleaders to break the will of the opposing football team – it is also 99.9% effective at attracting straight men… according to Elle!

Valedictorian An academic title of success. In US colleges the final and most anticipated speech of graduation day is always given by one of the students; the honour usually goes to the student who ranks highest in academic achievement.
