How we do it

• Employ over 1000 people

- approximately 450 refinery employees

- approximately 600 contractors (maintenance, projects, shutdown prep)

• Safety is our first priority

- “Nobody Gets Hurt” initiative

- Using LPS hazard recognition and risk assessment processes

• High quality products through

- Upgraded instrumentation and controls

- On-line analyzers

- Use of external source of H2

- New Quality assurance laboratory

Potential Hazardous Scenarios

Toxic release•H2S•Hydrofluoric acid (HF acid)

Fires•Large volumes of hydrocarbon•Pressurized fires in process equipment

Mitigation•Fixed detection and suppression systems•On site firefighting equipment and personnel•Mutual assistance

• Onsite Response- Shift Supervisors (field commanders)

• Vermilion training• Brigade leader and ICS training• Standard First Aid & CPR

- Shift operators are trained in emergency response• Initial training of 5 days at Vermilion fire school• 1 day each year - hands on hose handling and fire suppression training• Designated First responders in an emergency

- Volunteer fire response team• Additional training at Vermilion• Additional In-house training sessions• Assist when paged

- Emergency Operation Centre• 15 positions including IC, Communications, Medical, HR, Security, Public Affairs• Includes representatives from SCES and RCMP

- Rescue team• 12 members trained in High Angle and Confined Space

- Other• Trained Medical staff• Industrial Hygienist• Technical dispersion modeling

• Off-site response- North American Rapid Response Team (NARRT)

• Imperial Oil resources available to provide support in an emergency• Equipped for Oil spill and waterway containment

- Mutual assistance• Strathcona County Emergency Services• SDMAP member companies

• Emergency preparedness- Site Training

> Four refinery-wide simulations per year> Covers fire and hazardous release> Full EOC involvement> Use of First Responders and Rescue team> Non-essential personnel assemble in Emergency Assembly Areas

> Shift teams do quarterly simulations and weekend response drills> Held on off-shifts> Deploy trucks, practice defensive and offensive roles> Equipment reviews> Table tops

- North American Rapid Response Response Team (NARRT)> The NARRT team exercises and trains two times per year

What we might need from mutual assistance

Pumper trucks for exposure protection and water supply

Foam for a large tank fire or multiple tank fires

High volume fire hose for additional water supply
