4) Describe how this activity benefits you and/or the college

The theme this year of the National Association of Biology Teachers Annual Biology Professional Development Symposium is Merging Theory and Practice: Forging New Roads in Professional Development. This 2018 theme seeks to highlight projects with strong ties to theoretical frameworks and relevant evidence-based literature, including (a) implementation of professional development initiatives and (b) research on professional development initiatives. Projects focus on undergraduate instructional assistants, graduate teaching assistants, and/or faculty; including those at various institutions of higher education (e.g. community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and universities). I am planning on incorporating the information and knowledge I gain at the conference into my own personal teaching at the college and also sharing specific information to colleagues at Academic Development Day in Spring 2019 semester.

5) Did you submit a proposal and receive S&PD funding within the last 12 months? NOTE: Do not include funding for travel that was requested or offered by the administrator to whom this proposal is being submitted.

6) How does your activity relate to the Strategic Plan and Mission of the College?

The information I gain at this conference will help me to better inspire hope in the students at Palm Beach State. I am specifically hoping to connect with instructors at other 2-year colleges to see how they motivate their students. The information I gain will help to advance my own personal skills in teaching and also the skills of other professors by sharing my knowledge with them.

7) If approved, what is your instructional plan while on leave: Note: Supervisors of faculty who teach must provide a detailed plan of instructional time while the professor/instructor is away from the classroom on SPD leave. An example of unacceptable coverage would be to send students to the library during class time.

Students will provided with screencasts of lectures and online homeworks to complete using Blackboard during the 1 day of classes that I will miss by attending the conference.

4) Describe how this activity benefits you and/or the college

I am particularly excited about the them of this year's conference: Transnationality, Tolerance and Communication. Given the ongoing struggle with civility and tolerance in our world today, I look forward to working with and learning from my peers as to new and innovative ways to work on these issues with our students. Given our college's ongoing commitment to student success, having our students learn from my experiences/new pedagogy from this conference will make them stronger students and world citizens.

6) How does your activity relate to the Strategic Plan and Mission of the College?

In looking at our newly released Strategic Plan (2018-2023), I found several connections. For example, in our mission, we seek to provide "student-centered learning experiences that transform lives and strengthen our community." By having time with colleagues focusing on FCA's commitment to tolerence in communication, I will come back with new and innovative ways to engage students in activities that will help them develop their own social consciousness and desire to innovate (also tying into our value of being "transformational"). This aligns with our goals to engage and "strengthen internal and external relationships" -- I can use what I learn to achieve and teach our students to work on a "healthy and diverse culture" and "connect to the community" -- all while fostering a learning environment that encourages and embraces diversity and tolerance through communication.

7) If approved, what is your instructional plan while on leave: Note: Supervisors of faculty who teach must provide a detailed plan of instructional time while the professor/instructor is away from the classroom on SPD leave. An example of unacceptable coverage would be to send students to the library during class time.

My students will just have completed their informative speeches. They will use the class period I am gone to finish peer evaluations of other speeches and then begin research on their persuasive speeches. Students will be asked to meet with their established class learning groups to compile research tips and brainstorm for ways to find information on speech topics. This assignment will be due electronically by the end of class time to ensure they've used class time completing work for SPC 1017. This way, upon my return, we can immediately start working on their persuasive speeches based on the work they were able to complete during my absence.

4) Describe how this activity benefits you and/or the college

The AAML course covers all areas of law that I teach in my Family Law class at the college, and would provide me with not only an update on the law, but also new cases to be used for lecture examples and explanations for the students, as well as ethical scenarios, which would benefit the students of the college. As a professor of Family Law, it is critical that I am up to date on the law. In the past year, there have been significant changes in Florida's family law statutes and how they are applied by judges in case law, inlcuding those regarding alimony and time sharing with children which are two main topics covered during class. Additionally, the course would provide me with CLE credits requried to maintain my status as an active member of the Florida Bar.

6) How does your activity relate to the Strategic Plan and Mission of the College?

As a professor of Family Law, it is critical that I am up to date on the law. One of the beliefs set forth in the Strategic Plan is that faculty development is integral to quality education - the AAML conference would serve that pillar by providing valuable continuing learning education in my area of expertise/practice in order to provide a quality education to family law students, providing them with the most thorough and up to date law. Additionally, family law is an area of law that provides a signifcant number of jobs to paralegals in the local area - in order for our students to be competitive in the family law paralegal job market, having access to the most up to date legal information, law, and practice strategies is key. Our mission statement includes providing a dynamic teaching/learning environment and preparing students to contribute and compete successfully in our community, which is exactly what attending this conference and gaining the additional knowledge on the updates of the law would enable me as a Professor at Palm Beach State College to do.

7) If approved, what is your instructional plan while on leave: Note: Supervisors of faculty who teach must provide a detailed plan of instructional time while the professor/instructor is away from the classroom on SPD leave. An example of unacceptable coverage would be to send students to the library during class time.

I would not be missing any class time and therefore no additional instructional plans would be necesaary.
