To all our fabulous parents, carers and friends, we hope you had a wonderful Christmas break. Thank you for all your kind generosity

and gifts at the end of last term.

STAFF NEWS

We welcome Mrs Philippa Lingard to the front office at Broadwood. Mrs Lingard will be

supporting Mrs Simpkins at the front desk as well as carrying out administrative work for the team. She has already settled in well, and is enjoying getting to know children, staff

enjoying their early Christmas present!

Huge congratulations to Miss Jess Waldron, who got engaged last month. We are looking forward to hearing about her wedding plans.

This year we raised money for The Genesis Trust, Bath and Place2Be. A whopping £922.43 is going to be shared equally between these two

charities.

Thank you to everyone who donated so generously and came along to enjoy our Christmas performances.

Please look out for these books in our class libraries, Corsham Library, The Corsham Book Shop or online.

3/4M

3/4M enjoyed this story because of the idea of miniature people living in

trees.

The Minpins By Roald Dahl Little Billy's Mum says he must never go out through the garden gate and explore the dark forest beyond. So, one day, that's exactly what he does. There he meets the Minpins: miniature people who live in the hollow trees. They soon warn Little Billy of the fearsome, galloping Gruncher, who has grunched thousands of Minpins. And it will gobble up Little Billy too - unless he can find a way to defeat the hungry beast, once and for all...

Apples

Apples enjoy reading this series of books as they are fun and make them all laugh!

The Dinosaur that Pooped A Planet By Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter In this laugh-out-loud rhyming picture book, Danny and Dinosaur are off on an adventure in space! But when Danny realises he's forgotten Dino's lunch box, the very hungry dinosaur eats everything in sight, including their only way back home: the rocket! Many other books are also available in this series.

Apples (non-fiction)

Apples have been learning about winter and enjoyed looking at this book from the

Gloucester library box in class.

Hibernation (First Step Non Fiction)

By Rob Nelson

Hibernation is a cycle that some animals go through every year. Most people know that bears hibernate. But why do they hibernate? And what other animals hibernate?

Ivern’s Recommended Reads chosen by Apples and 3/4M

3/4M (non-fiction) Year 3/4 are exploring this question this term: Why did the Mayan empire decline? They are using this non-

fiction book to gain information.

Mayan Civilization (The History Detective Investigates) By Claire Hibbert

Who were the Maya? Why did the Maya build temples? What was Mayan writing like? How did the Maya dress? This book helps children at Key Stage 2 discover the answers to these and other fascinating questions.

Research has shown that children need to understand 98% of the words they read in order to fully understand what they are reading. Improving vocabulary skills will therefore improve children’s comprehension skills. Although a child may come across a new word, they usually rely on hearing words 10-20 times before it becomes part of their vocabulary.

Simple ideas for improving vocabulary skills

Think of other words which mean the same thing (synonyms).

Can you think of a word which means the same as _________?

Can you think of another word the author could have used here?

What does this word mean here? Does it always mean this?

1. Read, read, and read: Use a combination of attempting to derive meaning

from the context of the sentence as well as from looking up the definition

in a dictionary. Don’t be afraid to give a ‘child-friendly’ definition yourself

if you think the dictionary definition will take too much time.

2. Keep a dictionary or thesaurus on hand!

3. If children are reading independently, encourage them to use their

reading diaries to keep a note of any words they don’t know the meaning of

ready to discuss or look up later.

4. Draw a picture to memorise the meaning of new words you come across –

these can be as funny as you like!

5. Keep a list of new words on the fridge. Try to use them in everyday

conversation. Who can use these words the most in a week?

6. Learn a word a day. Using a word-a-day calendar -- or develop your own

list of words to learn.

7. Play hot potato – give a child a word, you must take it in turns to think of

an alternative: i.e. said / exclaimed / shouted

8. Have fun with rhyming words! Is this a real or word or a made up word?

BAD WEATHER

May we remind you of the procedures the school will use should snow prevent staff from getting to work.

Unexpected Heavy Snowfall—Heating

and Toilets OK

Mrs Cooke, Mrs Fry and Mrs Parker all live outside Corsham, so it is possible that not all of

us will be able to reach the school. If this happens, messages may be taken at the school by

those teachers who can reach the site.

The school will remain open if sufficient teachers arrive to look after each class. If it is impossible

to supervise a class due to no teacher being present, the children in that class will be sent

home. If that happens: A) A message of closure will be given to the

local Wiltshire radio stations. B) The telephone will be manned to answer

queries. C) A text will be sent to your mobile. D) A message will be posted on the school

website www.corshamprimary.co.uk E) An email will be sent to you. No child should be sent to or left at school until it

is certain that the class will open.

Unexpected Heavy Snow—Heating and Toilets NOT working

School will be closed and the procedures above

repeated. The local radio stations will be informed when the school is able to re-open.

Structural Damage to Buildings

The school buildings are built to the latest specifications so closure is only likely if

structural damage occurs. The same procedures for partial or school closure will be operated if

necessary.

DON’T FORGET that we have our text messaging and emailing service which we use in case of emergencies so please let us know if

you have changed your mobile number or email address and keep an eye on the school

website. (A text message/email will be sent to each child’s first family contact only.)

Polite Request … When driving onto school sites, please may we ask you not to leave your engine running whilst waiting. This is not legal and is environmentally unfriendly as well as causing noise pollution. Rule 123 of the Highway Code says: “The Driver and the Environment. You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution. However, it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults.” Thank you for your consideration.
