The Social Action Box on February 4-5 will support Souper Bowl for Caring. On the weekend of February 4-5, our country will stop and gather to celebrate and watch the Super Bowl. That weekend, at Mass, our Edge participants will help to tackle hunger by taking a collection to assist local food banks. The Second Collection for February 4-5 will support Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s efforts to continue providing quality education and morals to our students in our Catholic schools.
The monthly Catholic Review magazine is being
sent to registered parishioners. It will be delivered to your home four times a year. Every month copies will be avail-able on the lobby tables. If you do not currently receive the magazine in the mail 4x a year but would like to, please let me know. If you currently receive the maga-zine in the mail but would rather pick it up in the lobby, please let me know. Fr Gerry Bowen In looking over the Gospel and the Sermon on the Mount, I came across this small, but wonderful, exposition of why the Beatitudes describe certain people as “Blessed”. “When St Augustine was asked to name the three most important virtues, he gave an interesting answer: First, he said, humility. Second, humility. Third, humility. Humility is God’s favorite thing; he longs to find it in us. Humility is the unifying idea that undergirds the eight Beatitudes, which we just heard, and which summarizes Jesus’ teaching about how to live. Looking carefully, we see a common denominator: the person who is blessed is the person who is not thinking about himself all the time. The poor in spirit and those who suffer persecution gracefully realize that they are not the center of the universe -
God is. The clean of heart realizes that other people don't exist just for the sake of his pleasure. The peacemaker is concerned about the needs and problems of others. The merciful is concerned about the suffering of others. The mournful is concerned about the damage his sin does to the Church, the world, and other people. The meek cares more about getting things done than getting credit for doing things. Those who hunger for righteousness realize that their life has a higher purpose, that it’s part of a bigger story. Underlying all the Beatitudes is this fundamental attitude that that puts God and others ahead of self. It looks out at the world instead of staring in, fixated on self. This is humility, the bedrock of basic human maturity. God loves this humility, because it opens the soul to receive his gifts. The arrogant soul is closed in on itself. No one can get in, not even God, who wants to deliver his gifts.” Another writer described it this way:
"The quality of mercy is not strained; It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest; It blesseth him that gives and him that takes: ‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes The throned monarch better than his crown: His scepter shows the force of temporal power, The attribute to awe and majesty, Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings; But mercy is above this sceptered sway; It is enthroned in the hearts of kings, It is an attribute to God himself."

BIBLE STUDY IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER! We are reading the Acts of the Apostles together. We use the Little Rock Bible Study program. Our ses-sions begin with prayer, we read some of the biblical text out loud (you can choose not to read if you like), we talk about what we read and heard, we see a 20 minute video, sum it all up, talk about how it might apply to our own lives today, and close with prayer. We meet on Tuesdays after the noon Mass and on Thursday at 7:30pm – both sessions are held at WL. A light snack is offered on Tuesdays to tide you over. The book we use is $10 and will be available at the first few sessions

BISHOP BARRON HAS A NEW VIDEO SERIES: PIVOTAL PLAYERS IN THE CHURCH.
We have purchased this set of 6 videos and will watch it with Fr. Gene on Sunday afternoons beginning February 19. Each session will feature one or two of the great figures of faith in our church’s history and examine how they contributed to the growth of God’s Kingdom. The first saint being presented is St. Francis of Assisi as “the Reformer”. The series is done in the same magnificent style as was “Catholicism” traveling all over the world and taking the viewer to see where the historical events happened. Fr. Gene will lead a brief discussion after each video, so the plan is to go from 1:30 to 3:00pm. The other “Pivotal Players” are Feb. 26 – Michelangelo; March 5 – G. K. Chesterton; March 12 – Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman; March 19 – St. Catherine of Siena and March 26 – St. Thomas Aquinas. Come join us!

Healing Community Corner Crime isn't just the breaking of laws. Crime harms the people we love and undermines our sense of safety. Crime demands a response, but the current approach to crime and incarceration often neglects the needs of victims, exacts revenge instead of accountability, and fails to make our communities safer. It is time to build a new approach—one that validates those victimized by crime, transforms those responsible for crime, and encourages communities to play a role in creating a safe and just society. Seventeen of us are taking the six-week class from Pris-on Fellowship on Outrageous Justice. We will report our conclusions at the end of our study.
OUR DAILY BREAD CASSEROLE PROJECT at SJRC is continuing. Thanks to your generosity, we collected more than 150 casseroles in January! The schedule for February 2017 will be: February 11-12 casserole pans, with required
information and chili recipe, will be distributed AFTER each Mass.
February 18-19 frozen casseroles will be collect-ed 30 minutes BEFORE the SCHEDULED start of each Mass.
No volunteers are available during Mass or at any other time during the week. Many thanks for your support and cooperation with this schedule. Your assistance in helping to feed many of the hungry in Baltimore is appreciated.
CHRISTMAS BIKE AND BOOK DELIVERIES In cooperation with St. John’s United, our neighbor at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 18 children’s bikes and 3 large boxes of Children’s books were delivered to 3 Baltimore inner-city churches in time for distribution to needy families at Christmas. The bikes were among those collected at the annual “Give It a Second Life Collection” held last September. They were inspected and repaired as necessary by Race Pace Bicycles at no charge. The books were donated by the children in our Religious Education program. Please save your family’s outgrown children’s bikes and books for next year’s collection. Involve your children in the process so they can learn the joy of Christian giving.
BISHOPS’ CONFERENCES CALL FOR PRAYERS, ACTION, SUPPORT FOR PEACE
IN THE HOLY LAND On January 17, representatives of bishops' conferences from several countries, including the United States, gathered in the Holy Land to call for peace and action to end the occupation that violates "the human dignity" of Palestinians and Israelis in the West Bank, East Jerusa-lem and Gaza. In a statement signed by the 14 gathered representatives, they wrote: "As Bishops we implore Christians in our home countries to recognize our own responsibility for prayer, awareness and action." And they continued “We all have a responsibility to oppose the construction of settlements.
