Town supports Shop Watch scheme
A scheme has been setup allowing shopkeepers to communicate effectively to help eliminate shoplifting. The scheme is backed by local police, with Shildon officers Blackwood and
Staff at Bargain Booze have been working alongside police to catch thieves.
Littlefair set to work with our local retail outlets. All shops would be provided with a radio system, linking each store to the next with a direct line to police. The police say that most of the
shoplifters are known to the shopkeepers, and with further input from local residents, the scheme is perfectly placed to succeed with strong community support.Morrisons and Bargain Booze are already onboard with Apex Radio Systems for Shop Watch, with police set to visit every business in Shildon in the next month. Indeed staff at Bargain Booze have recently had a spate of thefts and found that an adult had purchased alcohol for a youngster. Staff worked well with police, which resulted in all offenders being prosecuted.PC David Littlefair of Shildon Police said, “I’m delighted with the positive way the staff at Bargain Booze have been working to identify customers who are committing offences. With Christmas coming up shoplifting will undoubtedly go up, so I encourage all shopkeepers to be vigilant and report any incidents to Shildon Police.”If you are aware of any thefts in town, please call Shildon branch on 0345 6060365.

Kevin Ellsworth appeared at Newton Aycliffe Mag-istrates’ Court recently, to face four charges of common assault and a further charge of assaulting a witness who had assisted in an investigation. Only the latter charge was put to the defendant, who entered no plea. The court heard that the 49 year-old, of Coopera-tive Street, Shildon, had assaulted a neighbour during the early hours of 24th September. Another man had tried to

intervene but he too had been assaulted. Over a week later, at around midnight on 2nd October, the neighbour alleges that he was again assaulted by Ellsworth and that his daughter was also assaulted after she had gone out to look for her father. Matters were adjourned until 14th December when committal proceedings will take place. A request to alter the terms of the defendant’s bail was rejected.
New housing development gets underway
Work began last week on the new housing devel-opment on Spout Lane, near the Locomotion rail museum. The site will hold 270 new Persimmon homes and the street names will follow a railway theme, paying homage to past superinten-dents and chief engineers
of the London and North East Railway. They include;• Adams Court• Drummond Way• Gresley Drive• Ivatt Walk• Peppercorn Close• Reven Crescent• Sterling Way• Wordsell Way
House numbers have also been allocated to the properties, although no street has a ‘number 13’. Work has begun with diggers clearing space for new roads and drainage systems. The show home will be near the bridge at the bottom of the lane.
Work has begun on the site at Spout Lane, which will be home to ‘Wordsell Way’ and ‘Peppercorn Close’.

Baptisms at St. John’s
Father Rupert Kalus baptised three children into the church this week. Bethany Louise Freeman was first to the font, as parents Stephen John Hind and Claire Freeman proudly looked on. The local couple, from Jubilee Road in Shildon, named Richard and Louise Meldris, Karl and Marie Meldris, and Rachel Kirbride as Godparents to Bethany Louise. They all enjoyed a reception afterwards at Old Shildon Club.Young Harvey Leo Stoker was brought to the font by parents Brian and Helen Stoker of Celandine Way in the town. He was Christened as Godparents Anthony Stoker and Brittany Fuller completed their vows. Friends and family later enjoyed a reception at the Cumby Arms Hotel.Last but by no means least
was young Callum Gordon Kirwin. Parents Carl Philip Lambert and Claire Louise Kirwin of York Square in Shildon proudly looked on as Callum was welcomed into the church. They
named Barbara Kelly, Pat and Mandy Clarkson, and Stephen Morrison as Godparents to Callum. They all enjoyed a reception at Elm Road Club after the service.

Inquest continues into crossbow father’s deathShildon man Keith Richards was shot dead by police marksmen outside his home in Cheapside, Shildon, in May 2009Mr Richards had armed himself with a crossbow and made several calls to 999. Suffering from depression, facing home repossession and with a drink-driving conviction looming, he told police he had nothing left to live for and wanted to shoot officers. In an anti-depres-sant and alcohol fuelled rage, he fired crossbow bolts at police despite being warned that they were armed. Forced to respond, Mr. Richards was killed by a marksman at 1.20am on 12th May 2009. It was the first fatal shooting by an officer from the Durham Police Force.A full inquest into his death began last Wednesday at The Work Place in Newton Aycliffe. Jurors heard the 999 telephone conversations he had with police, which were at first suspected to be hoax calls. He told them that a fight was taking place outside of his home, but officers who arrived on scene failed to find anything. In a later call Mr Richards said he faced a drink-driving charge and wanted to die. Despite the police worker trying to calm him down, he continued to claim he wanted to be dead and that he wanted to shoot the police. The inquest heard that Mr Richards’ recent past had been very troubled. He had a debt problem, and he and his wife had voluntarily handed the keys of their home to their bank to avoid repossession. Mr Richards had also had his tools stolen, which he used to repair housing after leaving his job as a teaching assistant at Windlestone School near Chilton. It was suggested to the jurors that this was due to work-related stress issues. Mr Richards’ brother, Stephen Richards, a retired detective superintendant, told the inquest, “I think it’s fair to say that at times his overall mental health was not what it should have been and he suffered from depression.“I wasn’t aware he wanted to kill himself, but I was aware of two occasions when he was taken to
hospital when he had taken some tablets.” The post-mortem examina-tion on Mr Richards’ found 220mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood and traces of anti-depressant drugs. The drink-driving limit is 80mg. The examination also confirmed that his wounds were also consistent to that of someone shot whilst holding a crossbow. As the inquest continued this week, first response officer PC Karen Parker gave evidence to the panel. She told how herself and PC John Lamb were called to Mr Richards’ home following a series of nuisance 999 calls. He did not answer the door but upon exploring the rear of the property, the officers were met with a tirade of abuse. PC Parker noticed that Mr Richards was armed and radioed in the informa-tion, which triggered an armed response unit. She wasn’t sure what type of gun it was, but the incident log showed ‘Subject is in possession of an air rifle’ with a later entry reading ‘Male is stating that he wants police to shoot him because his life is not worth living.’Mr Richards then armed himself with a crossbow and fired three or four crossbow bolts at PCs Parker and Lamb, who took cover behind a fence. PC Parker was “absolutely sure” that the armed response unit told Mr Richards they were armed. Three police marksmen were in a garden taking cover behind a wall
when PC Parker saw sparks as the projectiles hit the road and then more sparks and debris when Mr Richards fired at the garden wall.Expert opinion has also been sought regarding the police standard issue body armour and how it might react to a crossbow bolt being fired at it. PC Peter Haygarth has worked for nearly 15 years as a firearms trainer, told the panel that police involved in the incident had body armour and helmets that would stop a round from a 9mm short-barrelled rifle and a Magnum .357 revolver. However he said it was not clear how it would react to a “puncturing type implement” such as a crossbow bolt fired at high speed. When asked by Durham coroner Andrew Tweddle to make an experienced and educated assumption on how the body armour might hold up, PC Haygarth said, “If I was wearing body armour sir, I would rather somebody fired a 9mm at me than a crossbow because I know it would protect against it.” He confirmed that two gunshots were fired by two armed officers who were taking cover behind a wall. Only one hit Mr Richards, killing him. Chief firearms instructor, Sgt Duncan Charlesworth, told jurors that, “A police officer may discharge a firearm when they believe there is immediate threat to themselves, their colleagues or members of the public.” The inquest continues.

Poetry CornerBefore We Grew To Men
Life was simple thenBefore we grew to men,
Snuggled in our bedsWinters day ahead,
Father clearing snowMother on the go,
A life of peace and calmIn our mothers arms.
Summer days were longMemories still as strongFather worked so hard
Mother helped and charred,Life seemed cruel for themBefore we grew to men.
When sometimes on our bedHe’d rest his weary head
The smell of sweat and soilOdours of his toil,
And then we’d hear him prayThankful for his day.
They watched as we grew strongSo proud that we belong,
And saw our shadows growFledglings fly you know!
And as they watched us soarBabies now no more
They wiped a tear asideAfraid we’d see them cry.
Now those times have passed,As fathers to our taskTo be as good as they
And watch our children play,To kneel with them and pray
To God we’d like to sayGive our parents rest
They simply were the best.

Don’t miss a display by Durham Amateur Football Trust on local football hero Jim McMillan, on show at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon until Friday 18th November.Jim McMillan played almost all of his football at senior level with Crook Town AFC, the only exceptions being when he was doing his national service or studying for his planning qualifications. Jim enjoyed his long asso-ciation with the club from 1951 to the 1966-67 season, and never regretted signing for them. He recalls many happy

memories shared with players, officials and fans of the club during this time.Crook Town, as with most clubs, have enjoyed periods of success whilst also having times of struggle. McMillan’s time at Crook was mainly one of the most successful periods and he was a member of all of their four post-war FA Amateur Cup winning teams, giving him the unique record of four winners’ medals. The Durham Amateur Football Trust is proud to have Jim McMillan as their President, and he regularly attends their functions.
Their display at Locomotion will include some of his souvenirs and memorabilia from his playing career. In addition, there will be a talk and film show by Durham Amateur Football Trust in the Education Room at Locomotion on Saturday 29th October, starting at 11.30am. It’s free to attend and all are welcome.

The notorious Sherman Cup and Davison Shield events were held at Temple Park, South Shields on Saturday 22nd October. Although inclement weather had caused disruption to last year’s fixture, this year athletes only had to contend with strong winds. Shildon AC members were out in force for both sections of the competition, and some pleasing results were gained. Under 15 boys are proving to be a team to be reckoned with as they claimed 1st team place. Henry Johnson ran a tactical race and although he has just moved up to this category, was delighted with his silver medal. The 1 lap course was tough in sections with some steep hills; this sorted the men from the boys as Henry crossed the line in 10.41.

The Under 12s were runners-up and the Under 14s won, giving the team the treble and having been undefeated for over thirty eight games over the last two seasons.

the Sportsweek Trophy in July with a net score of 62 - both good scores, con-sidering par for the course is 72.A spokesperson for the club cheekily remarked, “George's achievement is even more remarkable, as he is widely regarded as having the worst swing in the club!”
A swinging success
Jake Findlay had a pleasing performance with 11.22 closely followed by the ever improving Joseph Bell, with 11.53. Completing the team was Jack Wade with 14.00. Under 17 boys were rep-resented by Matthew Coulthard who worked his way through the 2 lap course to gain an amazing 9th place with 23.23. Dan Hardy proved his place in the cross country competi-tion as he crossed the line in 31.32, and outstanding achievement over the 3 lap course he was 10th over the line against U20 and Senior Men.U13 girls saw Lizzie Cramb romp around the 1 lap in 13.35 and achieved her 6th place comfortably. Battling against the strong winds, Rosie Findlay narrowly missed out on 3rd place, but was happy with her time of 12.35 and 4th position. Georgia Hirst also clocked
14.41. Zoe Hewitson showed her true colours gritting her teeth to be 4th over the line for U17 and U20 women. Her amazing time of 25.59 over the 2 lap course gave her 3rd place in her under 17 category. Elizabeth Wood continues to improve and the leap to U20 women has not knocked her confidence back, with 3rd in her category with 29.52.“Shildon Running & Athletic Club is open to anyone from the age of 8 upwards. If anyone is interested in joining the club please come along for a free try-out session,” said a spokesperson. For details check out the website, www.shildon-running.co.uk for nights & times to suit your age group. If you require any more in-formation call 07592611600 or email [email protected].
