NOTES TO MASTER 1. Compliance with the Stability Criteria does not ensure immunity against capsizing regardless of the

circumstances or absolve the Master of his responsibilities.

Masters should exercise prudence and good seamanship having regard to the season of the year, weather forecasts and the navigational zone and should take the appropriate action as to speed and course warranted by the prevailing circumstances.

2. Before a voyage commences, care should be taken to ensure that the cargo and sizeable pieces of

equipment have been properly stowed or lashed, so as to minimize the possibility of both longitudinal and lateral shifting while at sea due to rolling and pitching accelerations.

3. In no condition is the carriage of fish in deck pounds permissible. 4. The enclosed calculations provide for free surface effects on the carriage of crab in water

(R.S.W.). The Master should note that the use of R.S.W. allows for large free surface effects which negatively affects the stability of the vessel.

5. The deckhouse aft and forward have been modelled and included in the cross curve data. The point that downflooding occurs at is considered to be the accommodation door to the after deckhouse. All openings below this point are to be maintained closed while at sea (doors and hatches to have gaskets and be dogged weathertight). The worst operating condition shown in this booklet because it has the lower GM is Condition 7 - Port Arrival Full Load Less Hatch 10% Consumables. Condition 3 - Port Departure has less area under the curves than Condition 7. The criteria for Condition 3 with topsides icing was found in compliance with TCMS STAB 4 criteria for winter topsides ice operations. The angle of downflooding in Condition 3 with ice accretion is less than 40°.

7. The booklet is completed using the following specific gravities for the various products and liquids:

Fresh Water 1.00 Crab in R.S.W. 1.025 Diesel Fuel 0.87

8. The loading conditions in this booklet assume a stowage scheme which may or may not reflect the

way the product is actually loaded in this vessel. Where the actual loading scheme or product stowage rate varies from the figures used in this booklet, it is the Masters responsibility to ensure that the vessel is safely loaded and in compliance with the Stability Standards. This booklet has been prepared with the holds loaded to their geometric center.

9. Any modifications to the vessel which would affect the calculated stability criteria in this book are strictly prohibited without prior approval from Transport Canada, Marine Safety.

10. The fuel oil burning sequence used in this booklet is that the fuel oil tanks are to be burnt evenly.

angle of heel. ii) The area under the righting lever (GZ) curve should not be less than 0.090 meter radians up to 40°,

or the angle of downflooding if this angle is less than 40°. iii) Additionally, the area under the righting lever (GZ) curve between the angles of heel of 30° or 40° or

between 30° and the angle of downflooding if this angle is less than 40°, should not be less than 0.030 meter radians.

iv) The righting lever GZ should be at least 0.20 meters at an angle of heel equal to or greater than 30°. v) The maximum righting arm should occur at an angle of heel preferably exceeding 30° but not less

than 25°. vi) The initial metacentric height (GM) should not be less than 0.35 meters.

REFERENCES USED IN BOOKLET Vertical heights are referenced to the baseline as noted on page 6. The longitudinal centers are referenced to midships. The booklet is completed using metric units: meters for distances and metric tons (2205 LBS) for weight.

Page 10 F/V SKATE STABILITY BOOKLET EXAMPLE CALCULATIONS To determine the Stability Characteristics of this vessel for conditions other than those included in this booklet: 1. Determine the weight and centers of all loads. Vertical centers are required above baseline as

indicated on the Baseline Particulars and the longitudinal centers are from midships per page five. Use Example Loading Sheet Number 1.

2. Sum the weight and the products of the weights by their centers. The results of dividing the sum of

the moments by total weight will give the VCG or LCG of the loading condition. 3. Determine the total free surface moment. Free surface moments for fuel and water are shown in the

table on Page 7 & 8. Divide this total by the displacement. This figure is known as the Virtual Rise in KG or "The Free Surface Effect" and must be added to the VCG calculated in Step 2, to give the correct KG of KGF for stability purposes.

4. For quick reference in determining acceptable loading conditions (without topside ice) a maximum

VCG curve is included. For the displacement you have calculated, read the curve at the correct trim to determine the maximum permissible KG. As long as the KGf you have calculated in Step 3 is less than the figure from the curve, your loading condition is acceptable.

5. To determine righting areas under curves, etc., it will be necessary to use the "Cross Curves of

Stability" for the correct trim. INTERPOLATION To determine hydrostatic and cross curve data at intermediate valves of displacement and trim, interpolation may be used.

Enter the Cross Curves of Stability at the trim closest to the trim of the condition you are analyzing. At the calculated displacement, read the righting arm values (KN) at the angles noted in the table. Perform the calculations as noted in table. The VCG value shall be corrected for free surface as shown in the previous example. The GZ value is then plotted against the angles of inclination to obtain a righting lever curve from which the Master can determine the vessel's stability. The vessel must meet the Stab 4 Criteria as outlined on the Trim and Stability Conditions.

The curve of MAXIMUM VCG is a useful tool for determining quickly whether a certain loading condition will meet the intact stability criteria. The curve is prepared by analyzing the ship at a range of displacements. At each displacement, the center of gravity (VCG) is raised until one of the stability criterion is not met. At this point, the margin of stability is zero and a value on the curve is obtained. In order for a condition to pass the required stability criteria, the ship's center of gravity, after it has been corrected for free surface effect, must be less than the limiting VCG. EXAMPLE:

The sample condition has a corrected VCG of 3.519 meters, at a displacement of 342.26 MT with a trim of 1.500 meters fwd. Entering the MAX VCG tables with a 342.26 MT displacement, the maximum height of the center of gravity is listed as 3.853 meters. The corrected VCG is 3.519 meters, therefore the vessel has 0.334 meters of GM in excess of the requirements. The vessel meets the intact stability criteria for this condition.

If the curves of MAXIMUM VCG were not used, the second option for the Master would be to calculate the righting arm curve for the condition using the Cross Curves of Stability. This method is detailed on the previous page.
