How time flies – the second season in the Schiller theater has come to an end and what a successful season it was too. Janácek’s Aus einem Totenhaus, Smetana’s Die verkaufte Braut, offenbach’s Orpheus, Händel’s Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno and Nono’s Al gran sole carico d’amore! also, at the Werkstatt studio with many modern pieces, there are still more premieres to come: Manfred Stahnke’s Wahnsinn das ist die Seele der Handlung, works by Hindemith and Shostakovich – names like these go to prove how broad the range of our musical programme is, brought to you by the admirable Staatskapelle orchestra and the splendid Staatsopernchor (opera choir).
and you, dear audience, flocked to our performances in droves. However there is still more waiting to enthral you. alban Berg’s Lulu with daniel Barenboim and andrea Breth will have its premiere soon, as will Emilio de’ Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo, conducted by rené Jacobs and staged by achim Freyer. and on the occasion of Wolfgang rihm’s 60th birthday we will perform his Dionysos at the end of the season during the iNFEKtioN! Festival.
So what’s in store for the new season? Find out by reading this booklet, in which we whet your appetite with news of our great projects for the Wagner year – Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, Der fliegende Holländer – and during our Easter FESttaGE festival, the Ring cycle together with full cast and instrumentation, as well as daniel Barenboim, the outstanding Wagner conductor of our time, on the rostrum.
Mozart’s La finta giardiniera will be staged by Hans Neuenfels, with the support of Christopher Moulds, a very successful young conductor, and after this will be Le vin herbé, staged by Katie Mitchell and conducted by Franck ollu. Swiss composer Frank Martin wrote this work in 1938 as a version on the Tristan und Isolde theme. our iNFEKtioN! Festival for Modern Musical theatre features Purcell’s The Fairy Queen adapted by Helmut oehring and staged by Claus Guth, with Michael Boder conducting. Hot on its heels comes Hanjo by toshio Hosokawa.
our diverse repertoire will also include new operas for children and young people and of course we mustn’t forget to mention our Staatsballett with their premiere of Boris Eifman’s Tschaikowsky – Das Mysterium von Leben und Tod and Onegin, Caravaggio and more. or the successful concerts of the Staatskapelle in the Philharmonie, the Konzerthaus building, in the Bode-Museum and in Berlin’s rotes rathaus.
We are delighted to greet our new colleagues at the deutsche oper and the Komische oper, managers dietmar Schwarz and Barrie Kosky. We wish them much success in their work and are looking forward to working side by side with them.
But most of all dear audience and friends we are particularly looking forward to seeing you; to hearing your applause and, it goes without saying, to noting your criticism too!
See you soon in the Schiller theater!

Daniel Barenboim at Mozart’s spinet in the house in Salzburg where Mozart was born, 1952
Jürgen Flimm: dear daniel, you will celebrate
your 70th birthday this year, 2012.
Daniel BarenBoim: in a sense, i have two birth-
days. at that time there was a law in argentina
stipulating that the father had to have his new-
born child registered within three days. But my
father had forgotten about that and went to the
registration office only on the fourth day, that
is on 19th November. the public servant said: »i
am sorry, but i cannot enter the 15th as the
date of birth, as today is the 19th. this is against
the law.« – »Well, what can we do about that,
the boy is already here«, my father said. – »i
will enter the 16th November.« therefore all my
papers give the 16th November as my date
of birth, but actually i was born on the 15th.
Jürgen Flimm: do you celebrate twice?
Daniel BarenBoim: Sometimes i do. in any case
i accept presents twice. (laughs)
Jürgen Flimm: imagine you wake up on your
birthday and are asked to play a birthday
song to yourself and the keyboard lid is open.
What would you play?
Daniel BarenBoim: Well, probably one of
Mozart’s works. you know, i asked the american
composer Elliott Carter in New york a similar
question on his 100th birthday. after the concert
a small reception was held at Carnegie Hall, and
i asked him: »Elliott, how did you spend your
birthday?« after all, i was very much interested
to know what a 100 year old person does. »i
stayed in bed a bit longer«, he said. i went on
joking: »Well, you have grown a bit old by now,
haven’t you?« and he answered: »No, not at all.
i never get up before knowing exactly what i
want to write. and i had such a wealth of ideas
in my head this morning. this is why i stayed in
bed longer. i got up at 11 o’clock, had coffee and
sat down to start composing.« this is the best
birthday story i can tell you.
Jürgen Flimm: really a great story. and when
i ask you for your first piano experience ever,
what do you remember?
Daniel BarenBoim: We lived in Buenos aires in
a rather small apartment, and both my parents
gave piano lessons. there was a bedroom and
the piano room where i stayed during the day.
Every time our doorbell rang, somebody
came for a piano lesson. i thought that everyone
played the piano. after all, i had never met a
person not playing the piano. For me it was the
most natural thing to do. i remember well that i
wanted to do as the other children did. But initi-
ally my father would not allow me. »When you
are a bit older and still want to learn playing the
piano. But it is not a toy.« When i was five and
a half years old i started to take piano lessons.
My first teacher was my mother. My mother had
a special talent for teaching children. later she
had a fantastic class in israel. afterwards my
father taught me, which was wonderful, as he
was an excellent pedagogue. My father thought
that you need to sit in a natural posture when
Daniel Barenboim turns 70. For more than six decades he has been at home on concert stages and in opera houses all over the world, as a pianist as well as a conductor. artistic director Jürgen Flimm talks with »his« general musical director on his childhood and youth, on experience having moulded his character, on music and of course also on the upcoming anniversary.

playing the piano, as you sit at a table. Not ma-
king big gestures and fuss, but sitting straight
at the edge of the chair seat. these are very nor-
mal and simple ideas which are, however, not
remembered all that often. i have been grateful
for this early education my whole life. therefore
the way in which i play the piano and think of
music, did not really change.
Jürgen Flimm: let us talk about argentina a bit
more.
Daniel BarenBoim: My parents were born in ar-
gentina, and so was i. My paternal grandfather
had come from russia with his family, after the
pogroms at the beginning of the 20th century,
in about 1903 or 1904.
Jürgen Flimm: the name Barenboim is not
really russian, is it?
Daniel BarenBoim: No, it’s yiddish and means
»Birnbaum« in German, which would be pear
tree in English. My maternal grandparents were
still children when they came to argentina.
their families had brought them onto the ship.
this happened also at the beginning of the
century, i think in 1903. He was 16, and she was
14 years old. their families were wiped out in
the pogroms in russia. thankfully they had sent
their children away in time. this was possible
as both families had relations in argentina.
When they arrived in Buenos aires, the autho-
rities would not allow them to disembark. the
admission of Jewish immigrants was restricted.
only families were allowed into the country,
and the argentine authorities intended to send
the children back to Europe. My grandfather,
16 years old, addressed the captain of the ship
and appealed to him: »Please help us, we do not
want to go back. it is horrible back there for us
Jews.« the captain said: »i cannot do that, i do
not have a mandate. the only thing i can do is
marry you on board the ship.« My grandfather
went to get the girl, the captain married them,
and, as a family, they were allowed to disem-
bark. they were met by their relatives and went
their separate ways. they had no contact for
two years, then they met again by chance, fell
in love – yet they were already married. this is
my grandparents’ story. a story full of love.
Jürgen Flimm: and how did your family get to
israel in the end?
Daniel BarenBoim: My father thought that, as
israel had been founded as a state for Jews, a
Jewish family should go and live there. it was
particularly important to him that i grew up as
part of a majority, not as a member of a minori-
ty, so that i could lead a normal life. on our way
to israel, in 1952, we stopped over in Salzburg.
igor Markevitch, the great russian conductor,
had heard me play in argentina and had invited
me. at the time he was the instructor for a
conducting course at the Mozarteum univer-
sity in Salzburg and thought i could perform
in the final concert of the Salzburg Festival. at
Christmas 1952, when i was ten years old, we fi-
nally came to israel. there i went to school and
passed my school-leaving examination. i was a
very happy child, and the atmosphere in israel
was very positive.
Jürgen Flimm: i have experienced this spirit
myself. at the end of the 1960s i spent three
months in a kibbutz and very much admired
this way of living in a community.
Daniel BarenBoim: People often feel that they
do not work for themselves any more, but
for the state. But as the state had been newly
founded, people worked for the state and thus
for themselves – and vice versa. therefore the
mood in the country was so optimistic.
Jürgen Flimm: let us return to music. your
thinking in cycles – all works by Beethoven, all
works by Wagner, all works by Mozart – does it
6 talK Daniel Barenboim & Jürgen Flimm
also go back to these early childhood and youth
years?
Daniel BarenBoim: in the beginning there was
a very simple reason for that, not an artistic or
intellectual one. i was 17 years old and sud-
denly had an empty schedule. i was no longer
a »prodigy«, but not grown up yet. and i was
used to performing in concerts since the age of
seven. then i met an acquaintance in a street
in tel aviv who was the director of the tel aviv
journalists’ house. Here in the 1950s and 1960s
all important press conferences were held.
there was a hall seating 400 persons, and my
acquaintance told me that he planned to organi-
se cultural events there. »Wouldn’t you want to
play there some time?« – »yes, of course!« – »and
what would you like to play?« – »all Beethoven

was: »Maybe, but you asked me.« i played my

on occasion of the opening of the Schiller

»Well, what are you going to play?« you answe-

bly thought about which Chopin work i could
play. Probably i had no good idea in that very se-
cond, and a voice inside my head said: Schubert.
Jürgen Flimm: you have an unlimited wealth of
works memorised, also many operas and concer-
tos. More than one thousand, you told me. How
can you explain that you have them all stored in
your memory?
Daniel BarenBoim: in never stop studying. i do
not need the score of Figaro or tristan for con-
ducting, but i would never go to a rehearsal or
performance without having checked out
the score before. you always discover something
new, for example a connection which you
had not noticed in exactly this way before.
Never theless you have to re-start from scratch,
because the sound you arrived at yesterday is
no longer there. Sometimes i find something
new even during the concert. it may be just a
minute detail. and there is never a repetition of
any event. it vanishes immediately. therefore it
has a different meaning not only for different
persons, but also for one person at different mo-
ments, even on the same day. this phenomenon
provides us with energy.
Jürgen Flimm: you are so incredibly successful.
But have you ever really failed? did you expe-
rience a full flop so that you stated afterwards:
»oh my God, why did that happen to me?«
Daniel BarenBoim: Well, not all that often,
but several times, yes. i remember one such
occasion many years ago, in 1963: leon Fleisher,
a musician whom i admired very much, was
to perform a piano recital. it was at the begin-
ning of his illness when he had to stop playing
because of his nervous affection. one day before
the concert the event organiser called me and
asked me to stand in for him. of course i agreed
and played three Beethoven sonatas in New
york. i was a bit more nervous than normally. i
enter the stage and take a bow. When lifting my
head i see to my right artur rubinstein and his
wife, to my left vladimir Horowitz and in front
of me Claudio arrau, the three greatest pianists
of all times. i was virtually paralysed and my
performance was very poor. on each keystroke i
thought about their reactions: they did not like
this note, this one was perhaps just acceptable,
another one not at all. it was a horrible experi-
ence!
Jürgen Flimm: did they not praise you after-
wards, the three great ones, the three Magi?
Daniel BarenBoim: Horowitz did not even come
backstage, his message was clear. rubinstein
was lovely. He hugged me and said: »Well, this
was not one of your best days, was it?« But it
was arrau who helped me most. He came up to
me and said: »i understood much of what you
had in mind, but did not succeed in conveying.
if you are interested, come to my home, i am
sure i can help you a lot«. He spent three hours
with me and explained for every single note
how i should have played it differently in his
opinion.
Jürgen Flimm: it seems it turned out to be a
successful evening after all. that was a really
nice story. yet i have a question on a comple-
tely different subject. there are colleagues of
yours who at some time or other take a sheet
of paper, draw five lines on it and start compo-
sing. do you have your own secret shelf full of
musical scores?
Daniel BarenBoim: 143 symphonies and sympho-
nic poems! (laughs) No, when i studied harmo-
nics and counterpoint with Nadia Boulanger, i
wanted to start composing of course. therefore i
went to Paris for one year and a half during my
life in israel. But i soon found out that i was not
talented for this kind of work. i decided to tell
the world before the world started telling me.

»I do not need the score of Figaro
or tristan for conducting,

performance without having
checked out the score before.«
Daniel Barenboim in Igor Markevitch’s conducting class in Salzburg in 1954

bly thought about which Chopin work i could
play. Probably i had no good idea in that very se-
cond, and a voice inside my head said: Schubert.
Jürgen Flimm: you have an unlimited wealth of
works memorised, also many operas and concer-
tos. More than one thousand, you told me. How
can you explain that you have them all stored in
your memory?
Daniel BarenBoim: in never stop studying. i do
not need the score of Figaro or tristan for con-
ducting, but i would never go to a rehearsal or
performance without having checked out
the score before. you always discover something
new, for example a connection which you
had not noticed in exactly this way before.
Never theless you have to re-start from scratch,
because the sound you arrived at yesterday is
no longer there. Sometimes i find something
new even during the concert. it may be just a
minute detail. and there is never a repetition of
any event. it vanishes immediately. therefore it
has a different meaning not only for different
persons, but also for one person at different mo-
ments, even on the same day. this phenomenon
provides us with energy.
Jürgen Flimm: you are so incredibly successful.
But have you ever really failed? did you expe-
rience a full flop so that you stated afterwards:
»oh my God, why did that happen to me?«
Daniel BarenBoim: Well, not all that often,
but several times, yes. i remember one such
occasion many years ago, in 1963: leon Fleisher,
a musician whom i admired very much, was
to perform a piano recital. it was at the begin-
ning of his illness when he had to stop playing
because of his nervous affection. one day before
the concert the event organiser called me and
asked me to stand in for him. of course i agreed
and played three Beethoven sonatas in New
york. i was a bit more nervous than normally. i
enter the stage and take a bow. When lifting my
head i see to my right artur rubinstein and his
wife, to my left vladimir Horowitz and in front
of me Claudio arrau, the three greatest pianists
of all times. i was virtually paralysed and my
performance was very poor. on each keystroke i
thought about their reactions: they did not like
this note, this one was perhaps just acceptable,
another one not at all. it was a horrible experi-
ence!
Jürgen Flimm: did they not praise you after-
wards, the three great ones, the three Magi?
Daniel BarenBoim: Horowitz did not even come
backstage, his message was clear. rubinstein
was lovely. He hugged me and said: »Well, this
was not one of your best days, was it?« But it
was arrau who helped me most. He came up to
me and said: »i understood much of what you
had in mind, but did not succeed in conveying.
if you are interested, come to my home, i am
sure i can help you a lot«. He spent three hours
with me and explained for every single note
how i should have played it differently in his
opinion.
Jürgen Flimm: it seems it turned out to be a
successful evening after all. that was a really
nice story. yet i have a question on a comple-
tely different subject. there are colleagues of
yours who at some time or other take a sheet
of paper, draw five lines on it and start compo-
sing. do you have your own secret shelf full of
musical scores?
Daniel BarenBoim: 143 symphonies and sympho-
nic poems! (laughs) No, when i studied harmo-
nics and counterpoint with Nadia Boulanger, i
wanted to start composing of course. therefore i
went to Paris for one year and a half during my
life in israel. But i soon found out that i was not
talented for this kind of work. i decided to tell
the world before the world started telling me.

My father had studied philosophy, and
basically he was more of a philosopher than a
musician. He was a wonderful teacher, and he
contemplated music like a philosopher. this is
what i learnt from him. i admire very different
kinds of music. With the exception of thought-
less and unreflecting music. i simply don’t get it.
Finally i want to tell you another story: the
great Spanish guitarist andrés Segovia celeb-
rated his 80th or 85th anniversary in london,
and BBC conducted a televised live interview
with him. Suddenly the interviewer asked him:
»Maestro, do you ever think about death?« Not
a nice question to ask an old person, i would
think. Segovia quickly replied: »you need to
know that i speak with God every day: i played
hundreds, no thousands of bad concerts. i
played thousands of wrong notes on my guitar.
i had lapses of memory, just horrible. i do not
deserve to come to you. Just leave me here!«
Jürgen Flimm: a good ending for a birthday
interview.
We all hope that you will celebrate your bir-
thday well and that God will leave you with us
for a long time to come. i wish you all the best
with all my heart!

i n october 2010, as our second premiere in the
Schiller theater, Rheingold started off the new Ring
cycle. then for the 2011 FESttaGE festival Die Wal-
küre followed and during the coming season, the two
remaining operas will complete the tetralogy cycle.
this is the third time that daniel Barenboim will be
tackling Wagner’s epoch-making work: His first was
between 1988 and 1992 when a highly acclaimed
Ring staged by Harry Kupfer was performed during
the Bayreuther Festspiele festival, and the second
was between 1993 and 1996 when its new staging in
Staatsoper unter den linden continued the productive
co-operation with Harry Kupfer. Now it’s the Flemish
stage director Guy Cassiers who, together with daniel
Barenboim, is taking up the special challenge which
any work on the Ring demands. this production will
be staged in two of the major opera houses in Europe
– Berliner Staatsoper and teatro alla Scala di Milano.
Moreover, it is a ring for the 21st century.
Guy Cassiers’ staging stands out due to its new
and aesthetic essence, a quality not experienced until
now. in co-operation with an international team of
artists from a wide range of disciplines, who have
their creative base in the antwerp toneelhuis, he has
developed an extraordinary stage concept. video pro-
jections are one of its main features, as is the use of
special fabrics and materials as well as the inclusion
of dancers. all these elements combine to produce
a magical theatre experience which, together with
Wagner’s overwhelming music, does not fail to make
an impact.
Guy Cassiers and his co-workers – stage and
lighting designer Enrico Baggnoli, video artists arjen
Klerkx and Kurt d’Haeseleer and costume and fashion
designer tim van Steenbergen, all see Wagner’s ring
as a drama which has much in common with the
present day. in the same way that Wagner expressed
the deep-rooted feeling of dilemma present in his
time during the middle of the 19th century; Cassiers’
interpretation intends to reveal the crisis-laden con-
ditions of our times. Wagner depicted the inexorable
decomposition of an agrarian economic and social
system under advancing industrialisation, and in his
staging, Cassiers reflects the sheer volume of images
and information in our globalised world which tends
to overburden the individual. More and more, the
real world is being replaced by virtual worlds, each
person and each object become the projection screen
for dreams, desires and deep cravings. thus the pro-
jections, which are both large-scale and fragmented,
are the representation of external phenomena as well
as the inner experience of the characters.
the vast array of excellent Wagner singers means
that we can expect masterly vocal achievements and
vivid characterisations. and with daniel Barenboim,
one of the leading Wagner conductors of our time, on
the podium of »his« orchestra, Staatskapelle Berlin,
there’s guaranteed to be impressive musical theatre
full of expression, tonal beauty and passion.
a new Ring always attracts attention; all the more so with the year
2013 in mind since this not only marks the 200th anniversary
of richard Wagner’s birth, but also it’s when daniel Barenboim will
take to the rostrum to conduct the opera cycle.
after Das Rheingold and Die Walküre and now with the premieres of
Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, the ring has come full circle.

cycle. then for the 2011 FESttaGE festival Die Wal-
küre followed and during the coming season, the two
remaining operas will complete the tetralogy cycle.
this is the third time that daniel Barenboim will be
tackling Wagner’s epoch-making work: His first was
between 1988 and 1992 when a highly acclaimed
Ring staged by Harry Kupfer was performed during
the Bayreuther Festspiele festival, and the second
was between 1993 and 1996 when its new staging in
Staatsoper unter den linden continued the productive
co-operation with Harry Kupfer. Now it’s the Flemish
stage director Guy Cassiers who, together with daniel
Barenboim, is taking up the special challenge which
any work on the Ring demands. this production will
be staged in two of the major opera houses in Europe
– Berliner Staatsoper and teatro alla Scala di Milano.
Moreover, it is a ring for the 21st century.
Guy Cassiers’ staging stands out due to its new
and aesthetic essence, a quality not experienced until
now. in co-operation with an international team of
artists from a wide range of disciplines, who have
their creative base in the antwerp toneelhuis, he has
developed an extraordinary stage concept. video pro-
jections are one of its main features, as is the use of
special fabrics and materials as well as the inclusion
of dancers. all these elements combine to produce
a magical theatre experience which, together with
Wagner’s overwhelming music, does not fail to make
an impact.
Guy Cassiers and his co-workers – stage and
lighting designer Enrico Baggnoli, video artists arjen
Klerkx and Kurt d’Haeseleer and costume and fashion
designer tim van Steenbergen, all see Wagner’s ring
as a drama which has much in common with the
present day. in the same way that Wagner expressed
the deep-rooted feeling of dilemma present in his
time during the middle of the 19th century; Cassiers’
interpretation intends to reveal the crisis-laden con-
ditions of our times. Wagner depicted the inexorable
decomposition of an agrarian economic and social
system under advancing industrialisation, and in his
staging, Cassiers reflects the sheer volume of images
and information in our globalised world which tends
to overburden the individual. More and more, the
real world is being replaced by virtual worlds, each
person and each object become the projection screen
for dreams, desires and deep cravings. thus the pro-
jections, which are both large-scale and fragmented,
are the representation of external phenomena as well
as the inner experience of the characters.
the vast array of excellent Wagner singers means
that we can expect masterly vocal achievements and
vivid characterisations. and with daniel Barenboim,
one of the leading Wagner conductors of our time, on
the podium of »his« orchestra, Staatskapelle Berlin,
there’s guaranteed to be impressive musical theatre
full of expression, tonal beauty and passion.
a new Ring always attracts attention; all the more so with the year
2013 in mind since this not only marks the 200th anniversary
of richard Wagner’s birth, but also it’s when daniel Barenboim will
take to the rostrum to conduct the opera cycle.
after Das Rheingold and Die Walküre and now with the premieres of
Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, the ring has come full circle.

the performance of the entire cycle of Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen marked the start of the FESttaGE festival of Staatsoper unter den linden under daniel Barenboim in 1996. 17 years later it is again this singular tetralogy which takes centre stage in the festival. With a cast of international stars, Staatskapelle Berlin and, of course, daniel Barenboim as the stimulating and inspiring musical director, four outstanding opera evenings are in store.
