ST WILFRIDS PARISH NEWSLETTER 28 th February 2016 2016/9 Third Sunday in Lent - Year C What have I got to do to make you love me What have I got to do to make you care, What do I do when lightning strikes me And I wake to find that youre not there? And sorry seems to be the hardest wordLyrics from an Elton John & Bernie Taupin song about a further, undescribed, breakdown in a lovers relationship with another. By the end of the song we still dont know if there is a reconciliation, and we are left wondering, and guessing what might be the outcome of the lyricist s repentant words. Repentanceto return to, to feel sorrow for is an act called for by God and is at the heart of the Gospel message. It is a foundational dynamic which, when realised, provides the conditions for the world to encounter and experience Salvific, Divine Love. Both John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth began their ministries with this basic principle, while the Psalms also reveal a historic precedence for repentance in stanzas full of poetic and musical desires to restore fractured relationships with God. Repentanceis a major theme of Lent. There is also a call for us to reflect on the effect of humanity thinking that it can exist without a loving relationship with God, and what the ultimate outcome will be? Much of the worlds mischief is a result of humanitys inability to return to…’ to feel sorrow forprevious actions. A world in which saying sorry can indeed seem to be the hardest word- but that shouldnt prevent us trying. In our faith tradition, God is revealed as merciful and loving, and this is reflected in The Parable of the Fig Tree in todays gospel. Even though there is a call to cut down the fig tree because it hasnt been bearing fruit, the decision to delay is meant to represent Gods mercy. This said, however, there is still an opportunity for a related Lenten spiritual exercise. In the context of the worlds relationship with God and Creation, what would be the outcome if by not repenting, by not returning to a loving relationship with God and each other, our experience is to find that “[we] wake to find that [Gods] not therenor anything else? “What have I got to do to make you love me What have I got to do to make you care, What do I do when lightning strikes me And I wake to find that you’re not there?

…And sorry seems to be the hardest word”

Lyrics from an Elton John & Bernie Taupin song about a further, undescribed, breakdown in a lover’s relationship with another. By the end of the song we still don’t know if there is a reconciliation, and we are left wondering, and guessing what might be the outcome of the lyricist’s repentant words.

‘Repentance’ – to return to, to feel sorrow for – is an act called for by God and is at the heart of the Gospel message.

‘Repentance’ is a major theme of Lent. There is also a call for us to reflect on the effect of humanity thinking that it can exist without a loving relationship with God, and what the ultimate outcome will be? Much of the world’s mischief is a result of humanity’s inability to ‘return to…’ to ‘feel sorrow for’ previous actions. A world in which saying sorry can indeed seem “to be the hardest word” - but that shouldn’t prevent us trying.

In our faith tradition, God is revealed as merciful and loving, and this is reflected in The Parable of the Fig Tree in today’s gospel. Even though there is a call to cut down the fig tree because it hasn’t been bearing fruit, the decision to delay is meant to represent God’s mercy. This said, however, there is still an opportunity for a related Lenten spiritual exercise. In the context of the world’s relationship with God and Creation, what would be the outcome if by not repenting, by not returning to a loving relationship with God and each other, our experience is to find that “[we] wake to find that [God’s] not there”… nor anything else? Novena of Grace:

The annual Novena of Grace to St. Francis Xavier will begin on Friday 4th March.

Fr. Tom Shufflebottom SJ will give a Novena reflection each day during the 12.15pm Mass, while a Novena Prayer will be said at the other two Masses.

The Novena of Grace is a Catholic devotion addressed to Saint Francis Xavier, which is usually performed from March 4 to 12. It was instigated in 1633 by an Italian Jesuit, Fr Marcello Mastrilli SJ, who saw a vision of St Francis Xavier after he had received a life-threatening head injury. Fr Mastrilli was on the verge of travelling to Japan to work as a missionary at the time and, in the vision, St Francis urged him to recommit himself to the mission and told him: "All those who implore my help daily for nine consecutive days, from the fourth to the twelfth of March inclusive and worthily receive the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion on one of the nine days will experience my protection and may hope with entire assurance to obtain from God any Grace they ask that is for the good of their souls and the glory of God." After his recovery, Fr Mastrilli not only kept his vow and travelled to Japan with a band of 33 Jesuit missionaries where he was martyred, but he also widely publicised St Francis Xavier’s promise and began the devotion of the Novena of Grace which continues to this day.
