During the months of August and September, Conferences and District Councils are often called upon to select a new President or co-Presidents. Nominating committees find themselves praying as they sort through the names of Conference and/or Council members who are eligible, in hopes of finding one or two Vincentians who are willing to step forward and serve as President. Perhaps, just perhaps, this process of looking for new leadership is just a little backwards. Leadership is a special and unique call from God; a call that comes with all the resources the called will need to serve. The call begins with Spirit of the Lord as it resounds in the heart of the called. Each of us is called to serve and to lead. At different times in our lives, that call will be manifested in different ways. Each call comes in its own time and in its own way. Discernment is one of the fundamental and foundational elements of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. And yet, even though the word is fairly commonly used, it is many times misunderstood. Discernment is the quality of being able to grasp or comprehend which is obscure. In other words, you and I are called to see beyond the obvious, to see with the eyes of faith. As Vincentians, we are called to discern with the eyes of faith our vocational call, our gifts and how they can be used, our decisions related to those whom we serve, and to discern who God is calling to leadership positions. We serve in faith and hope; believing that all that we need has already been provided. God has sent us the leaders we need, called them by name and empowered them to lead us. During the election process, the Conference and its members need to discern what leadership qualities the group most needs at this moment in time. Each leader brings with them a distinct set of skills and gifts, and the real question should be, “Are these the gifts our Conference needs today?” No one becomes President of a Vincentian Conference or Council by accident or just because no one else would do it. Not really. The providence of God not only guides us, but our Conferences and Councils as well. Each individual Vincentian must routinely assess where God is calling them today. Being a Vincentian leader is a wonderful gift and a blessing beyond measure. Serving as a Conference and a District President has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. Each day, I am humbled and honored by the call I received. If you are called to be a Conference or Council President accept it, name it, claim it, celebrate it and live it. If God needs us to serve his people, who are we to refuse?

Election Procedures for SVdP Conference or Council Presidents

Throughout the various levels of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the only elected office is that of President. The newly-elected President in consultation with the Conference or Council membership, appoints all other officers. The outgoing President or the clergy of a given parish may not appoint a Conference or Council President. The election of Conference and Council President is held by secret ballot in accordance with an approved set of procedures that are consistent with the Rule, Statutes and Bylaws of the Society. The term of office of a Conference, District or Diocesan Council President is three years, once renewable... Once a President has served two consecutive three-year terms, that person will not be eligible for re-election as President until a three-year term has elapsed under a different President. Each Conference or Council should have at least a Vice President, a Secretary, and a Treasurer, all of which are appointed by the President after consultation with the members. The President may appoint other officers. All officers appointed by the President serve at the pleasure of the President. Such appointment terminate automatically when a new President takes office. An incoming President may reappoint an officer or officers and others who served under the previous President. (Rule Part III:12) In most cases, the First Vice President of a Conference or Council serves as the chairman of a nominating committee. Depending on the size of the Council or Conference, two or four members should be appointed to serve on that committee. The purpose of the committee is to determine who is eligible and interested in becoming a Presidential candidate and to interface with Conference or Council members about Vincentians who they believe have demonstrated leadership qualities and have shown an interest in becoming an officer. Potential candidates are contacted and asked if they are willing to run for the office of President. Individual Vincentians may also contact the nominating committee and express their interest in running for office. As soon as eligible candidates have been obtained, the date for an election must be set and all voting members must be notified of the upcoming election date. The President is then elected by secret ballot and only full-enhanced members who are present at the meeting may cast a ballot. No absentee ballots may be issued or counted. Once the process has been completed, arrangements should be made to Commission the newly elected President. In the Diocese of Phoenix, all newly-elected Presidents take office on October 1st and serve through September 30th. In the event that a President resigns prior to the end of their term, an interim President is elected to serve until September 30. A new full term President is then elected to take office on October 1st. No interim Presidential term shall be counted in the term limit for a given Vincentian.

My fellow Vincentians, I have retired from the committee and have been given the great honor of receiving the Top Hat Award. This award is shared with the committee members, which consists of Vincentians and Retail Staff members. We all worked together with the store managers and a lot of wonderful people at the Dan O’Meara Center who supported us. You now have a new Chair: Bill Day from St. Philip in Payson. Bill resigned last fall as Director of the Conference’s three thrift stores (now called Thrift Mall) and moved back to the Valley. Bill will be looking for additional members for the committee; I hope some of you will step forward and volunteer for this. We have gone through many changes since Joe Riley and Shirley Smalley initiated this committee: I expect there will be on going changes. How else can the stores con-tinue to grow and create funding for all our ministries? Greeting and serving customers as well as those who have no funds to spend means we have many opportunities to see Jesus come through the doors! We need more volunteers! Please continue to support your stores as you have been and invite others to join you. Remember: No act of charity is foreign to the Society. Peace, Joann

The 8:00 o’clock Mass at St. Gregory on Sunday, May 20, 2018, was very special. During the Mass, we received a blessing by Father Andres Arango as we renewed our commitment to service as Vincentians. In addition, the following members received the Jubilarian crucifix for their continued work of serving the poor in the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul and Blessed Frederic Ozanam: Carmen Gamboa; Paul Hobaica; Lori Lepper; Dan Lopez; Jim Milstead; Bernadette Perkins; Ron Ramirez; and Esther Sanchez. With the exception of one Jubilarian, who has served for five years, all have served at least nine years or more. Some of the comments by these Jubilarians include: Diversity of our members; kindness and honesty of our members; a deep sense of commitment; availability of resources within the whole community; the strength and love from God which allows us to give of ourselves; to give from the heart in order to warm another; and how blessed we are to be able to give of ourselves. After Mass, we all went out for breakfast and enjoyed some good fellowship. It was a

wonderful gathering, which may be one of our last with Ceci Andrews as our president.

Thank you, Ceci, for a job well-done these past six years.
