CRISIS MANAGEMENT PLAN

St. Viator School has developed this Crisis Management Plan. The plan can be found in the principal’s office. All teachers have a copy of the Crisis Management Plan in their classroom.

1. NATURAL DISASTERS 1.1 TORNADO 1.1.1 The principal or staff will alert the teachers and students over the P.A. System if there is a watch or warning.

1.1.2 The students and teachers are to go to the school hall. If a class of older children overtakes a class of

younger children, they will assist the younger children down the stairs. Each classroom will position itself in the school hall as shown on the attached floor plan. Once in place, students and teachers will kneel and grasp the back of neck.

1.1.3 If time does not permit students to get to the school hall, students should instead be instructed to get under their desks. 1.1.4 The windows should be cracked open and the shades lowered. 1.1.5 The principal will announce over the P.A. System when it is safe to return to the classrooms. 1.1.6 In the event that a tornado does strike, the students are to go out to their fire drill places. The principal will announce if the building needs to be evacuated. 1.1.7 If any student is injured, the teacher should remain with the injured child and notify the office of the need for help. This can be done with the classroom call button, the walkie-talkie (if available), or by sending another student to the office. The other children in the class will be supervised under the care of another adult. 1.1.8 Tornado drills will be held at least once a year.

1.2 EARTHQUAKE 1.2.1 The students and teachers are to place themselves under the desks and try to protect their heads if possible.

It is helpful to hold on to the legs of the desk. 1.2.2 When possible, students should try to stay away from the windows. 1.2.3 Students who are in the hallway or large open areas should move to an interior wall, crouch down, and cover their heads with their arms. 1.2.4 Students who are outdoors should move away from buildings and utility wires, and either lie or sit down. 1.2.5 After the earthquake, an all-clear signal will be given over the P.A. System or by bullhorn. The students should evacuate the building as quietly and carefully as possible. They should go to their fire drill places. Roll call will be taken. 1.2.6 If any student is injured, the teacher should remain with the injured child and notify the office of the need for help. This can be done with the classroom call button, the walkie-talkie (if available), or by sending another student to the office. The other children in the class will be evacuated under the care of another adult. 1.2.7 Earthquake drills will be held at least once a year. 1.3 SNOWSTORM

1.3.1 In the event of a major snowstorm during the night, radio and TV stations will announce school closings. The principal will initiate the faculty phone tree and School Messenger automated phone and email notification system. The teachers will make their appropriate phone tree call.

1.3.2 If a snowstorm should occur during the day and students need to be dismissed early, students will not be allowed to go home unless they are picked up by a parent/guardian, or unless we receive word from a parent/guardian to let them go home. 1.3.3 The students are to remain in their classrooms and not leave unless they are called. 1.3.4 If the student is called to go home, they are to report to the office for dismissal. 1.3.5 If the parents/guardians need to be contacted, the main office and support staff will notify the parents by phone, using the school and rectory phones to make the calls. 1.3.6 One line at school will remain open for incoming calls. 1.3.7 A message will be recorded on the answering machine to give the parents/guardians directives. 1.3.8 No student should ever be released to a parent/guardian unless the parent signs them out with the office or school personnel.
