Godspeed,

From the Messy Desk of Fr. Rob

Dear Parishioners:

The Gospel of Matthew begins: “The book of the gene-alogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” Matthew mentions the genealogical link to David to emphasize that Jesus is the royal Messiah. The mention of Abraham is due to Matthew’s interest in the universal scope of Jesus’ mission: “…in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find bless-ing” (Genesis 22:18). It goes on to list the 42 genera-tions from Abraham to Christ. You know, the passage that reads so and so begat so and so, who begat so and so, who was the father of so and so. This goes on for the next 16 verses, where it finally concludes with: “Thus, the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Baby-lonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations” (Mt. 1:17). Bishop Robert Barron, in his Advent Gospel Reflec-tions, offers a unique understanding of this passage: “If the Word truly dwelt among us, then he was part of a family that, like most, was fairly dysfunctional—a mix of the good and bad. And this is such good news for us.” Bishop Barron highlights two figures mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus—Ruth and Rahab. Ruth was not an Israelite but rather a Moabite, and, thus, was a foreigner, or someone who was not part of the “in crowd”. Rahab was a prostitute living and working in Jericho. Bishop Barron concludes his reflection, “The good news of Christmas is that God himself pushed into the dysfunctional and ambiguous family of man.” This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Fami-ly. As we sit in church and gaze heavenwards, we see the statues of Mary and Joseph and are reminded that we are a part of this Holy Family. God cherishes to call us his children, and no matter how dysfunctional we may be, he still invites us to be a part of his Holy Family. Let us continue the peace of the Christmas season and embrace God’s invitation. Have a blessed week! Fr. Rob
