Second Homily Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas,

Today’s Second Collection is a superb benefit for our own St. Thomas of Villanova School—the FOSTOVS—Friends Of St. Thomas Of Villanova School. All the monies collected by them provide for many non-budgeted school items. I hope you were able to share your blessings through your virtuous generosity. Last week’s bulletin had a special envelope for

this collection. I hope you were able to return it today with your prayers and your generous gifts. If you forgot to bring it, you can just mail it directly in that envelope to FOSTOVS. As always, thank you again for your financial support of our wonderful, magnificent, outstanding school and our most amazing school children. The Pope’s Prayer Intention for July is to pray for Priests and their Pastoral Ministry—That Priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests. I would like to share the following Priesthood prayer which is one of my favorites!

Thou Art a Priest Forever To live in the midst of the world with no desire for its pleasure… To be a member of every family yet belonging to none… To share all sufferings; to penetrate all secrets; to heal all wounds… To daily go from men to God to offer Him their petitions… To return from God to men to offer them His hope… To have a heart of fire for charity and a heart of bronze for chastity… To bless and be blest forever… O God, what a life, and it is Yours, O Priest of Jesus Christ!

- By Fr. J.B. Henri Lacordaire, OP The Sisters of the Living Word had a late winter election assembly in anticipation of the end of the present leadership team. The new leadership team which consists of the two present team reelected members and one new member are: Sister Sharon Glumb, Sister Kristine Vorenkamp and newly elected Sister Carrie Miller. As you may know, Sister Kristine and Sister Carrie are parishioners of St. Thomas of Villanova. They were recently installed as the Leadership Team. I and several staff members and parishioners were invited to witness their religious ceremony of leadership and commitment. I promised our Parishioner-Sisters and all their Sisters your love, prayers and support as they hold a vision of service to the Church in joy and love. It is coming this week! But, they are not—Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth. And Father Ray will not be playing as he has withdrew and is on injured reserve, but other very experienced golfers—like Father Hugh Fullmer, Father John Clemens, John Plummer, Bob Malpede, myself—and many others have committed to play in our 15th Annual Golf Outing. So, what about you? We have several openings left. The registration deadline to play golf in our fun day outing is tomorrow, Monday, at 5:00pm. So what are you waiting for—Christmas? You won’t be able to play then! See you Friday at the first tee!!! Your Pastor, Rev. Thomas R. Rzepiela

MASS INTENTION OPENINGS Our 8:00am Mass inten ons have many openings. Although the most common Mass inten on is in memory of someone who has died, a “special inten on” Mass can be offered for many reasons, such as:

• Birthday • Anniversary • Special need (Like illness, surgery, military deployment, etc.)

To have a Mass offered on these occasions can be more appreciated and unique than flowers, money or gi s. If you would like to have a Mass celebrated for someone alive or deceased, just stop in the Parish Office or call 847-358-6999. The suggested offering is $10.00. A card with the date of the Mass can be provided, if you wish.

From the Principal’s Desk

We are star ng to get excited about our 2018-2019 School Year! Our staff isn’t complete though. We are s ll in need of a part- me, job share lunch person to warm and distribute lunches. This posi on is only a few days a week for about 2 hours. If you are interested, just contact the School Office. Thanks to all who have been suppor ng the 8th grade Washington DC fundraisers. The Por llo’s Dine-N-Share returned $300 in proceeds, and the Culver’s Dine-N-Share raised another $275 for the students. With 26 students in 8th grade this year, every penny earned will help off-set the trip cost. The 8th Grade June Car Wash was rained out, so they are trying again next Sunday a er all Masses. Come to the back of the school to support their fundraiser AND drive away with a squeaky clean vehicle. And… the monthly 8th Grade Babysi ng Night is becoming more popular. It will happen every 2nd Saturday of the month from 6pm—9pm. Mark your calendar for the next Babysi ng Night on Saturday, August 11th. More details coming! Lastly, our 2nd Collec on this week-end will be for the Friends of St. Thomas of Villanova School (FOSTOVS) that relessly works to help our school. Can we count on you for your support? God bless, Mary Brinkman

Today’s second collec on is for our very own St. Thomas of Villanova School. Please help us help these kids. With your help we recently purchased all new technology (iPads and Chromebooks) and upgraded the library so ware. The kids love learning with their new Q-ball classroom microphones. All of this was possible because of your generosity. The school is VIBRANT and DOING WELL. Our school, referred to by many as a “neighborhood treasure”, is second to none in the area. It is a wonderful Catholic faith based educa onal environment. 90 cents of every dollar raised is put into the school in the form of Grants for items that are beyond the reach of the opera ng budget. A generous donor has again made it possible so that contribu ons received qualify for our 2018 Summer Fund Campaign drawing for a 55” TV. Now through August 15, donate $25 and you will be entered in the drawing. Give $50 and be entered THREE mes. Give Monthly Donors are included.

Please support our 2018 Summer Fund Campaign. PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY and support our mission to help the school.

Growing Our Faith

Mr. Trueblood in the American detec ve fic on writer Martha Grimes’ novel The Man With a Load of Mischief used tea and sweets to bait his invita on to Detec ve Jury of Scotland Yard: “Now, you really must join me. I've some marvelous Darjeeling, and some delicious pe ts fours a friend of mine gave me for Christmas.” American children book author/cartoonist Shel Silverstein in his work Where the Sidewalk Ends used whimsical stories to bait his invita on to you and me: “If you are a dreamer, come in/ If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar/ A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer/ If you're a pretender come sit by my fire/ For we have some flax-golden tales to spin/ Come in! Come in!” It’s not that we always actually go to the events and places that people beckon us to, but as Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde in his work The Importance of Being Earnest, once observed: “Nothing annoys people so much as not receiving invita ons.” If this is so, at least no one can point fingers at the Son of Man, for as Billy Graham began a Decision magazine ar cle years ago, “Again and again in the Bible men and women are graciously invited to enter into personal fellowship with God. Some-one has said that the Bible is a book of invita ons from God to mankind, urging us to become His partners in redeeming the world.” Graham pointed to three specific examples. One is Christ’s invita on to disciple-ship found in Mark: “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” Another is Christ’s invita on to live in rela onship with him found in John: “Abide in me, and I in you.” A third is Christ’s invita on to peace

found in Ma hew: “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” As a guy who always seems to have one more thing to do, this invita on speaks volumes to me, and today’s Gospel from Mark echoes it. “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place,” Jesus says, “and rest a while.” The passage reminds me of one of my favorite songs: Norah Jones’ hit Come Away with Me. Someone told me once that we should read the Epistles as if they were wri en directly to each of us, as in “Dear John” or “Dear Sally” or “Dear Joe.” I listen to Jones the same way, with Jesus singing directly to me. “Come away with me in the night/ Come away with me/ And I will write you a song/ Come away with me on a bus/ Come away where they can't tempt us, with their lies/ And I want to walk with you/ On a cloudy day/ In fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high/ So won't you try to come...Come away with me/ And I'll never stop loving you…So all I ask is for you/ To come away with me in the night/ Come away with me.” I know there’s always work to do in building up the Kingdom. Jesus does, too. But listen once more to his delicious invita on (“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place, and rest a while”), and listen once more to him speaking to us through a talented singer-songwriter (“Come away with me/And I'll never stop loving you”). Not all invita ons are created equal, but this one, I think, is the one we should never refuse.

I powiedziała do nich: Zabrano Pana mego i nie wiem, gdzie Go położono (J 20,13).

Piotr i ów drugi uczeń pobiegli do grobu.

Bezsprzecznie. Czy to ma jakieś znaczenie? Tak. Dlaczego?

By zrozumieć znaczenie poskładanej chusty, musimy poznać pewien szczegół z ówczesnej hebrajskiej tradycji.

Słyszę, jak zachęca, by pójść odpocząć, nabrać tchu i dystansu. Wsiadam z Mistrzem i pozostałymi apostołami do łodzi, odpływamy. Ale wciąż ludzie Go szukają. Nie udaje się przed nimi ukryć. Widzę, że pomimo zmęczenia Jezus nie chce się schować, lecz skoro tylko przybijamy do brzegu, zaczyna nauczać. Podpatruję, z jakim zainteresowaniem ludzie Go słuchają. I ja też siadam na kamieniu, by rozważać Jego słowa…
