SEPTEMBER 5TH, 2021 | 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3

Monday is Labor Day. This day marks the time when working people around the country come to the end of the summer vacation season and students return (or have recently returned) to school. We set aside this day to reflect on the work we do. Over the course of our lives, we spend more time working than we do at any other activity. This year, we want to once

again pray for the men and women whose jobs have been impacted in any way by the pandemic. We pray for their continued perseverance and determination as they continue to seek ways in which to participate in God’s creative work. Our offices will be closed on Monday, but we will still celebrate Mass at 8:00 am.

A lot of ministries and programs are beginning to gather again this month (some this week in fact). Please look through the bulletin and join us.

Thank you to our recent donors for the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima and for three more vestment sets and for those who have come forward to participate in our outdoor memorials. I appreciate the generosity and support.

A few staff members and I were recently discussing how homilies hit people differently—some people may take them to heart and learn something or change something within their own mindset and lives and other people may take offense to them and be upset (which is never the intention). We are preaching to a congregation that’s at all different levels of faith and that has different levels of experience. Homilies aren’t just a bunch of words—they have the power to move us, inspire us, and teach us. We work hard to put together a homily that will speak to the diverse congregation, but it’s up to the people to carry it with them when they leave Mass. Us priests hold all the responsibility for preaching a great homily, but the congregation should hold some responsibility for its effectiveness. The homily is supposed to help open up the Word of God. If there is a part that helps and touches your life, you want to hold onto it; you want to pray about it; you want to take a look at your own life in relation to it. The mystery of the homily doesn’t end when we leave the ambo. A homily should challenge you, stir your heart, and deepen your knowledge of the faith…if it doesn’t, then it’s purely for entertainment. We all have to recognize that our lives are pulled in different directions by the world that surrounds us and our inclinations are not always to do what God wants us to do but what we want to do. The next time you attend Mass, allow the Word of God to challenge you and to move you. Don’t leave Mass the same as you arrived. Open your mind and your heart to God’s Word in the scripture and in the homily and then go forth to bring that Word into your daily life.

MEMORIAL OPPORTUNITIES

We have two new memorial opportunities for parishioners and one is also a way to also raise funds for our parish.

First off, we would like to see the grounds grow and beautify here at STM. We are offering a way for you to be a part of that while also memorializing or honoring a loved one or the family. The bricks are 8x8 and allow about 6 lines per brick. Here is the breakdown:

$150.00 for a 5-inch potted plant with a brick/plaque

$250.00 for a 15-inch potted plant with a brick/plaque

$150.00 adding a brick/plaque to an existing tree

$250.00 adding a brick/plaque to an existing large tree

$1200.00 for a 35-inch boxed tree with a brick/plaque

Secondly, we need new votive candle stands for the Statue of Mary, Joseph in the church, and for the shrines of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Guadalupe. Each cost $7,500. So a total of $30,000. The new stands are much safer due to the modern technology used. If you’re interested in outdoor memorial, visit our website to fill out a form and if you’re interested in purchasing one or multiple votive candle stands and having it memorialized, please contact Fr. Bede.

MASKS ARE REQUIRED

As mandated by Governor Sisolak’s Directive and the Bishop’s latest protocols, masks are required by all

individuals regardless of vaccination status. Thank you for your cooperation.
