Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages you to reduce your foodprint. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger. Given this enormous imbalance in lifestyles and the resultant devastating effects on the environment, this year’s theme - Think.Eat.Save - encourages you to become more aware of the environmental impact of the food choices you make and empowers you to make informed decisions. While the planet is struggling to provide us with enough resources to sustain its 7 billion people (growing to 9 billion by 2050), FAO estimates that a third of global food production is either wasted or lost. Food waste is an enormous drain on natural resources and a contributor to negative environmental impacts. This year’s campaign rallies you to take action from your home and then witness the power of collective decisions you and others have made to reduce food waste, save money, minimize the environmental impact of food production and force food production processes to become more efficient. If food is wasted, it means that all the resources and inputs used in the production of all the food are also lost. For example, it takes about 1,000 litres of water to produce 1 litre of milk and about 16,000 litres goes into a cow’s food to make a hamburger. The resulting greenhouse gas emissions from the cows themselves, and throughout the food supply chain, all end up in vain when we waste food. In fact, the global food production occupies 25% of all habitable land and is responsible for 70% of fresh water consumption, 80% of deforestation, and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. It is the largest single driver of biodiversity loss and land-use change. Making informed decision therefore means, for example, that you purposefully select foods that have less of an environmental impact, such as organic foods that do not use chemicals in the production process. Choosing to buy locally can also mean that foods are not flown halfway across the world and therefore limit emissions. So think before you eat and help save our environment! June 5

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day celebrations is Think.Eat.Save. Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages you to reduce your foodprint. Message from Vicar!“The Lord stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity.” (Proverbs 2:7)

Dearly Beloved in Christ,Greetings to all of you, in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

I am indeed happy to greet you all through this parish bulletin, St. Thomas Messenger, while I am still in my home town in Kerala. God said to the prophet Jeremiah, ‘For surely I know the plans I have for you….’ God would have wonderful plans for each one of us also. I firmly believe and abide by it. He has ordained us for His ministry the extension of His Kingdom. We as a family are earnestly looking forward to be with all of you very soon. Uphold us in your prayers!

I understand the present situation which our parish is going through, along with St. James MTC. Please continue to pray for victory over those crises and our Lord will surely help us all to overcome them.

Our ministry in Nerul and Khargar in Navi Mumbai, during the last three years, has been a memorable one. We were able to do our Lord’s work, extending our love and care to each member as belonging to one family.

The first week of June is observed as Student Day based on the theme God the source of wisdom. Schools might have reopened after the examinations of our children. I extend my prayers and blessings to all those who joined the new academic session and also to those who are awaiting their results. May the new academic year bring in abundant hope and success to our children. The school vacation is also ahead. I hope that the vacation time would refresh you through your travels and visits to your friends and relatives.

Many of our children in the higher classes and their parents might be engaged in identifying the right career or institution for their wards. As you thus seal the academic destiny of your children, you should not forget the primary objective of education, that is, “How one ought to live a righteous life”. Some parents drive their children to choose careers which they (parents) consider as best; the desire or talent of the child can get side-lined in the process. There is nothing wrong in selecting a career that will give your children financial security. But as we impart knowledge to the coming generation, it is important that they should be pinned to value systems that will guide their lives.

Christian Education can positively influence the character formation of a child. This story might tell you how important it is. A pious man once begged to God that he could see the glories in heaven and the tortures in hell. Amongst the dreadful sights in the hell, he saw a father and a son cursing each other. The father said to the son, ‘cursed be the hour in which you were born to me and cursed be all I have done for you. In order to make you wealthy I became a thief, and thus forfeited my salvation.’ The son replied, ‘cursed be the hour in which I was born, because you did not teach me to keep the commandments of God, to be virtuous and pious and to be charitable to the poor; and instead of punishing me on my faults, they were overlooked, and you are the cause of my damnation.’ In the heaven, he saw another father and son, but incessantly blessing each other: ‘O, blessed father! Eternal praise and honour be to you, that you taught me to fear God, to pray, to love Him and to be virtuous from my childhood.’ The father lovingly replied: ‘blessed are you my child! Blessed is your obedience which you have shown in following my teachings and admonitions by avoiding sin and vices, and by choosing the way of virtue….’

A child who is nurtured spiritually would be a blessed child for both his parents and the community. King Solomon says in the Book of Proverbs, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (1:7). Jesus very much valued little children. He pointed out that the Kingdom of God is merited only by those who in the inner self resemble a child. What He stressed, first of all, was precisely the child like simplicity of heart, the virtue of trust and utter abandonment of the self in the hands of God. Secondly, though children are too small in stature, they are potentially in high esteem, at God’s sight. A marvelous phenomenon of ‘a tiny mustard seed’, growing into a towering tree shows that a seed contains in itself potentially a tree. Even an infant bears in himself the image of God. Every child is precious and has a message to his world. ‘Sow good seeds at the early stage of a child’. It is really a worth. “Just as the seed is meant to be a tree, we are meant to grow in Jesus” (Mother Teresa). Whatever be the nature of seeds (virtues or evils) sowed, they will grow tall in his or her life and build the personality what he or she is in the future. Let good virtues be sowed. Let us prayerfully model our lives in the realm of our children; as good parents, teachers and friends.

I take charge from Thomas Koshy achen, who faithfully served and meaningfully shaped the parish to great heights during the last three years. I understand the legacy he has left behind and the big boots which I have to now fill. My sincere thanks are due to achen and his family. I pray that God abundantly bless them, as they continue their ministry for the Lord at Bethel MTC in Delhi diocese.

My beloved parishioners, I humbly request your prayers and support to carry forward all the activities, as God wants us to do for the welfare of our parish and the church at large. We are called upon to share our potentialities for building up spiritual relationships as a witnessing and serving community.

God bless you all with His abundant grace and mercy!

Yours in Christ’s Love, Sunil Achen
