TRUST Keys hold great significance for those who carry them. They represent the trust and authority of the owner when given to another person. We may give our house key to a trusted friend to take care of our matters while we are away. We may give keys to someone responsible for main- taining or working in a particular building. Keys to vehicles are given to people who have proven themselves responsible drivers. The readings to- day focus on this kind of trust—the trust that conveys authority and responsibility. In the first reading, the symbol is specifically that of a key; but the second reading and the Gospel also speak of trust and leadership as they refer to the earthly church that Jesus established. It is very common that many times we see the disciples in the Gospel missing the mark: not under-standing what Jesus is saying or doing. There are even a few times that Jesus even explains to them what he is saying. In today’s Gospel we see the disciple Peter understanding who really Jesus Christ is and because of this declaration Jesus Christ gives him His authority on earth. As we know, the pope has other titles, such as a vicar or Christ, which imply the authority of Jesus Christ here on earth through the pope, bishops and clergy. To be in union with the Church means that we are in ul-timately in union with Jesus Christ. For all of us, parishioners of St. Thomas, belonging to our par-ish means we are in union with Jesus Christ. That is why is so important to register as parishioners and make the commitment to go to the parish that we belong to. Technically, we belong to the par-ish that is closest to us based on our domicile. The important thing is that making a commitment to a parish is making a commitment to God. Many times people go from parish to parish because out of convenience and miss the sense of belonging to a spiritual family or having a spiritual home. Some-times people move to another parish because they no longer like the priest, things are not going the way they feel they should, etc. We must remember to always place our faith on Jesus Christ and His Church, which for all of us is our parish of St. Thomas. Let us continue to walk by faith, trusting God and His Church so that we may also make the profession of faith that Peter did so that we can hope-fully also share in His heavenly kingdom.

May God bless our parish of St. Thomas and all our parishioners,

Fr. Abel

Gospel: MT 16:13-20

R. Alleluia, alleluia. You are Peter and upon this rock I

will build my Church and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail

against it. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

R. Aleluya, aleluya.

R. Aleluya.

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Fa-ther. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the king-dom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
