Helping Hands of Midland 1301 Brinson Lane

One of our caseworkers met with Mabel, an 84-year-old woman who lives alone in a one-bedroom house on the lower east side of Midland. While she is proud of the fact that her house is paid for, the caseworker found that it was no more than a shack, in deplorable condition. Many of the windows were out, and the woman had taped paper on the windows to keep out the weather and insects. Her health is not good. She worked as long as she could as a maid, but her health got the better of her. She is living on $511 per month in Social Security income. Her legs are horribly swollen to the point that she cannot stand for any length of time.
Mentally, Mabel isn’t doing so well either. She gets confused very easily. When she called our helpline she said that she was behind on all of her bills and had no way of getting to our office. Our caseworker found that she was in fact current on all of her bills except for a gas bill of over $400. Atmos Energy had put her on a payment plan to help her with the debt, however our caseworker could not leave her in that predicament. We pledged the full amount to bring her bill current, and we will be in contact with Christmas in Action and other agencies to see what can be done to weatherproof her house and cut down on her gas bill.
While many of us have a hard time believing that there is this kind of poverty in Midland, it is here. Mabel’s living condition is not as uncommon as one might think. We are grateful for your incredible generosity that allows us to reach out each week to people such as Mabel, to help ease their burdens and afford them the opportunity to live their lives on a level of human dignity they so richly deserve.
