Lenten Regulations Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14
years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all
Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if
necessary to maintain strength according to one‘s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy
Saturday.
Things to know about Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018: It is a day of fast and abstinence. Of course, it is also St. Valentine's
Day. The wise suggestion is to have any family celebration, candy, etc.. the evening before which is also Mardi Gras.
This year we can't have VaLENTine's Day without LENT.
Wstrzemięźliwość od potraw mięsnych musi być przestrzegana przez wszystkich Katolików, którzy ukończyli 14 rok życia, w Środę Popielcową oraz we wszystkie piątki w okresie Wielkiego Postu. W Środę Popielcową wszyscy Katolicy, którzy ukończyli 18 rok życia a nie przekroczyli 59 lat, zobowiązani są do zachowania Postu. Osoby które mieszczą sie w tych
granicach wiekowych mogą sporzyć jeden posiłek. Dwa mniejsze posiłki dozwolone są w przypadku gdy są one konieczne do utrzymania się danej
osoby na siłach, ale jedzenie pomiędzy posiłkami nie jest dozwolone. Paschalny Post jak również wstrzęmieźliwość od pokarmów mięsnych
obowiązuje w Wielki Piątek i zachęca się do ich przestrzegania również w Wielką Sobotę. W tym roku w Środę Popielcową
NIE ma dyspensy od postu ze względu na Walentynki.

Once again this year, our parish will participate in the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl Lenten faith-in-action program. This program invites
Catholics to live in solidarity with our most vulnerable brothers and sisters around the world through the three Lenten pillars of praying, fasting and
almsgiving. RICE BOWLS will be distributed in our parish on Ash Wednes-day and the First Sunday of Lent. Please return them with your donations on
Palm Sunday weekend—March 24/25. God Bless you for your generosity.

(Catholic Relief Services-CRS) jest zakorzenionym w wierze programem przygotowanym na okres Wielkiego Postu. CRS zaprasza katolików do czynnej solidarności z najbiedniejszymi i najbardziej narażonymi na cierpienie braćmi i
siostrami na całym świecie praktykując trzy filary Wielkiego Postu: modlitwę, post i jałmużnę. Miski Ryżu będą dostępne w Środę Popielcową i w Pierwszą Niedziele
Wielkiego Postu. Prosimy o ich zwrot z jałmużną w Niedzielę Palmową. Bóg Zapłać.
Soup and Bread Suppers in Lent
Lent begins this year with Ash Wednesday on February 14th. The Spiritual Life Commission will once again sponsor the Tuesday Soup and Bread nights.
Soup and Bread will be served at 6:30pm on February 20 & 27 and March 13 & 20. This will be followed by a continuation of the video presentations by our Seminarian Elliot Zak:
Come “and learn the meaning of the words ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
The Lenten Mission with St. Al’s will be concluding on March 6th, therefore there is no Soup and Bread that week.
We once again ask for donations of soup from our parishioners so that we may offer this simple supper free of charge. Look for the soup sign-up poster in the lobby and sign up to bring your favorite soup for one or more of
the evenings. Bread is donated by Wally’s Market, no bread donations are needed. We will also collect a free-will donation each evening to be given to a charity so that we fulfill the Lenten practice of both fasting and
almsgiving. Please join your fellow parishioners for Soup and Bread, conversation, and spiritual enrichment.
Wielki Post rozpoczyna się w tym roku 14-go lutego i ponownie serdecznie zapraszamy
na Wielkopostne kolacje z zupą i chlebem. Potrzebne są osoby, które ofiarowałyby
domowego wyrobu zupe. Lista do zapisu chętnych znajduje się w przedsionku kościoła.
Kolacje rozpoczną się o godz. 6:30pm: luty 20 i 27 oraz marzec 13 i 20. Po każdej
kolacji nastąpi ciąg dalszy prezentacji (w jęz. angielskim) naszego kleryka Elliota Żak pt:
Idźcie i starajcie się zrozumieć, co znaczy: Chcę raczej miłosierdzia niż ofiary.
Bo nie przyszedłem powołać sprawiedliwych, ale grzeszników".
Podczas kolacji zbierane będą wolne datki, które zostaną przekazane na cele charytatywne ... więc w jeden wieczór będziemy się modlić, jeść postny prosty posiłek
i składać jałmużnę – wszystkie trzy praktyki zlecane katolikom na Wielki Post. Zapraszamy wszystkich do wzięcia udziału, podzielenia się chlebem z innymi
parafianami i jednocześnie wzbogacenie przeżycia Wielkiego Postu.

St. Thomas Becket Women’s Guild - Backyard Gardening for Birds and Butterflies
Please join us for the Women’s Guild meeting on Monday, February 19th. The meeting will begin at 1 pm with the general business, split the pot and door prize, followed by refreshments and guest speaker. Note, this is an afternoon meeting so we avoid the cold and dark of winter. Our guest speaker will be Master Gar-dener and Certified Naturalist, Marian Thill. Marian will share pictures, stories and practical tips on
how to turn an ordinary suburban garden into a wildlife haven. Learn how to attract a variety of butterflies and birds with simple ecofriendly elements and techniques that help you reconnect with
the environment in your own backyard. As always guest and new members are welcome.

2018 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me”
Last weekend our parish conducted the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew drive. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much
different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.
The ACA theme, “Come, Follow Me” was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services
to share God’s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese.
Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver
needed ministries and services.
For anyone is still wishing to make a donation, envelopes are located in the lobby.Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous
response.

abstinence. Can you tell us more about the connections between
these events?
Answer: Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the forty days known as Lent. Every year,
Christians highlight this penitential season as a time of self-examination,
reformation of one's life, and continued development of a deeper
spiritual life. The recommended practices of prayer, fasting, and
almsgiving become the focus of Lenten activity and ritual. Each of these
spiritual practices is aimed at personal discipline as well as continued concern
for the other, especially the poor or alienated.
Forty days is a symbolic biblical period of time, during which personal
transformation occurs and out of which people surface as more spiritual, ready to carry out God's mission. Relying on God's providence and care, no matter how difficult life becomes, is crucial to Lenten spirituality. Fasting was initially
stricter, permitting only one simple meal a day without meat, fish, or other delicacies. Such things were not even
allowed in the house.
In order to prepare for this in an age of no refrigeration, people gathered to consume whatever was not allowed
during Lent. This led to parties or celebrations originally referred to as
Carnivale, literally meaning "goodbye to meat," or Mardi Gras, literally
meaning "Fat Tuesday." The eating and celebrating ended on the Tuesday just
before Ash Wednesday. Today we focus more on moderation in all things,
as well as a strong concern the poor. What are you doing for the poor this
