Oh las Profundidades": Scott Hahn reflexiona sobre el Vigésimo Primer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario: "Oh, la profundidad de las riquezas, la sabiduría y el conocimiento de Dios", exclama Pablo en la Epístola de hoy. El salmo de hoy, también, toma la nota triunfante de alegría y acción de gracias. ¿Por qué? Porque en el Evangelio, el Padre celestial revela el misterio de Su reino a Pedro. Con Pedro, nos regocijamos de que Jesús es el hijo ungido prometido a David, el que profetizó para edificar el templo de Dios y reinar sobre un reino eterno. Lo que Jesús llama "mi Iglesia" es el reino prometido al hijo de David. Como hemos oído en la Primera Lectura de hoy, Isaías predijo que las claves del reino de David serían dadas a un nuevo maestro, quien gobernaría como padre al pueblo de Dios. Jesús, la raíz y la descendencia de David, solo tiene las llaves del reino. Al dar esas llaves a Pedro, Jesús cumple esa profecía, estableciendo a Pedro -y todos los que le suceden- como santo padre de Su Iglesia. Su Iglesia también es la nueva casa de Dios, el templo espiritual fundado en la "roca" de Pedro, y construido a partir de las piedras vivas de los creyentes individuales. Abraham fue llamado "la roca" de la cual los hijos de Israel fueron cortados. Y Pedro se convierte en la roca de la cual Dios levanta nuevos hijos de Dios. La palabra que Jesús usa - "iglesia" (ekklesia en griego) - fue utilizada en la traducción griega del Antiguo Testamento para la "asamblea" de los hijos de Dios después del éxodo. Su Iglesia es la "asamblea del primogénito", establecida por el éxodo de Jesús. Como los israelitas, somos bautizados en agua, guiados por la Roca, y alimentados con comida espiritual. Reunidos en su altar, en presencia de ángeles, cantamos su alabanza y damos gracias a su santo nombre.

‘Oh the Depths”: Scott Hahn reflects on the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!” Paul exclaims in today’s Epistle. Today’s Psalm, too, takes up the triumphant note of joy and thanksgiving. Why? Because in the Gospel, the heavenly Father reveals the mystery of His kingdom to Peter. With Peter, we rejoice that Jesus is the anointed son promised to David, the one prophesied to build God’s temple and reign over an everlasting kingdom. What Jesus calls “my Church” is the kingdom promised to David’s son. As we hear in today’s First Reading, Isaiah foretold that the keys to David’s kingdom would be given to a new master, who would rule as father to God’s people. Jesus, the root and offspring of David, alone holds the kingdom’s keys. In giving those keys to Peter, Jesus fulfills that prophecy, establishing Peter—and all who succeed him—as holy father of His Church. His Church, too, is the new house of God—the spiritual temple founded on the “rock” of Peter, and built up out of the living stones of individual believers. Abraham was called “the rock” from which the children of Israel were hewn. And Peter becomes the rock from which God raises up new children of God. The word Jesus uses—“church” (ekklesia in Greek)—was used in the Greek translation of the Old Testament for the “assembly” of God’s children after the exodus. His Church is the “assembly of the firstborn”, established by Jesus’ exodus. Like the Israelites, we are baptized in water, led by the Rock, and fed with spiritual food. Gathered at His altar, in the presence of angels, we sing His praise and give thanks to His holy name.

Marriage Preparation Course

Deadline is next Tuesday! If you are currently engaged, planning on getting married or having your marriage blessed in the church, we are offering the required Marriage Preparation Course at St. Rose of Lima. The classes will be held on Saturday, September 9 & 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and you must attend both sessions in order to receive a certificate of completion. Cost of the course is $100.00 which includes workbooks, snacks and lunch on both days. Registration must be done at the Parish Office by August 29 and payment must be with cash or Credit card. No checks please. If you have any other questions, please contact Sue in the Parish Office.

St. Rose of Lima Columbiettes will be hosting a Fall Bazaar. If you are interested in selling your arts and crafts, spaces will be available for $25. The bazaar will take place in the St. Rose of Lima Parish Hall on October 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. An Adult bible Study on The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy presented by Thomas Smith and Sarah Christmeyer will begin on September 10 and will run for 10 weeks and follow the Sunday evening Religious Education Schedule. The St. Rose of Lima bowling League is looking for fun, energetic and friendly people to join their League. Individuals over the age of 18 with any level of bowling skill are welcome. You can join with a 3-person team, or join another team. They meet every Monday for 30 weeks at 7 p.m. at Bandera Bowl. An organizational meeting will be held tomorrow Monday, August 28 at 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall, and bowling will start September 11. Like Peter in today’s Gospel, we can find that when we open our eyes to see, our ears to hear and our hearts to experience Jesus’ presence in our daily lives, God reveals himself to us. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul enabled the poor to experience Jesus’ presence by assisting 240 families, providing $3,000.00 in food, $1,500.00 for utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

October - Month of the Rosary

October is the month of the most Holy Rosary. In honor of the blessed Virgin Mary, who gave us this beautiful prayer, the Peace, Life, Justice Committee will lead a weekly rosary every Friday during the month of October. Each rosary will be prayed for a special intention. We invite you and your families to join us at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel.
