LIVING BRANCHES The Gospel and second reading for this Fifth Sunday of Easter emphasize the need for us to remain in Christ, and he in us. This shared life finds expression in the image of the one vine and many branches. We become living branches of the vine, members of the Body of Christ through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation, sacraments of sharing God’s own life. The First Letter of John describes the fruit of this vine as active love of neighbor: “And his commandment is this: we should believe . . . and love one another” (1 John 3:23). Our first reading from Acts shows us an example of someone who shares in Christ’s life in the person of Saint Paul. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - Barnabas reported to the apostles how Saul had seen the Lord on the way (Acts 9:26-31). Psalm - I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people (Psalm 22). Second Reading - This is God’s commandment: that we may believe and love (1 John 3:18-24). Gospel - I am the true vine; whoever remains in me will bear much fruit (John 15:1-8).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The month of May has not only good weather, but an interesting pedigree. It is named after the Roman goddess Maia, said to be the mother of Hermes, or Mercury. The Romans saw it as “love’s month,” while in England, more practical farmers called it “Three Milks,” since the cows grazing on springtime’s bounty could produce at a phenomenal rate. Old customs die hard, and Christians have never made peace with Maytime frolics. No wonder that popular tradition dedicated the month’s prayers and devotions to Mary, although we cannot lose sight of the fact that the liturgy always has Easter at the center of celebration. Recent developments have enriched Mary’s place in a cycle of feast days woven through the whole year, dedicated Saturday as a weekly day for devotion, and highlighted Mary’s role in the Advent story. In fact, every day of the year Evening Prayer centers on the singing of Mary’s Canticle of Praise. V NIEDZIELA WIELKANOCNA Dzieci, nie miłujmy słowem i językiem, ale czynem i prawdą! Po tym poznamy, że jesteśmy z prawdy, i uspokoimy przed Nim nasze serce. A jeśli nasze serce oskarża nas, to Bóg jest większy od naszego serca i zna wszystko. Umiłowani, jeśli serce nas nie oskarża, mamy ufność wobec Boga, i o co prosić będziemy, otrzymamy od Niego, ponieważ zachowujemy Jego przykazania i czynimy to, co się Jemu podoba. Przykazanie zaś Jego jest takie, abyśmy wierzyli w imię Jego Syna, Jezusa Chrystusa, i miłowali się wzajemnie tak, jak nam nakazał. Kto wypełnia Jego przykazania, trwa w Bogu, a Bóg w nim; a to, że trwa On w nas, poznajemy po Duchu, którego nam dał. 1 Jan 3, 18-24

Ja jestem prawdziwym krzewem winnym, a Ojciec mój jest tym, który uprawia. Każdą latorośl, która we Mnie nie przynosi owocu, odcina, a każdą, która przynosi owoc, oczyszcza, aby przynosiła owoc obfitszy. Wy już jesteście czyści dzięki słowu, które wypowiedziałem do was. Wytrwajcie we Mnie, a Ja /będę trwał/ w was. Podobnie jak latorośl nie może przynosić owocu sama z siebie - o ile nie trwa w winnym krzewie - tak samo i wy, jeżeli we Mnie trwać nie będziecie. Ja jestem krzewem winnym, wy - latoroślami. Kto trwa we Mnie, a Ja w nim, ten przynosi owoc obfity, ponieważ beze Mnie nic nie możecie uczynić. Ten, kto we Mnie nie trwa, zostanie wyrzucony jak winna latorośl i uschnie. I zbiera się ją, i wrzuca do ognia, i płonie. Jeżeli we Mnie trwać będziecie, a słowa moje w was, poproście, o cokolwiek chcecie, a to wam się spełni. Ojciec mój przez to dozna chwały, że owoc obfity przyniesiecie i staniecie się moimi uczniami. REFLEKSJA NA TEMAT CZYTAŃ Każdy chrześcijanin wezwany jest, aby dobrymi czynami potwierdzać wyznawaną wiarę. Jeżeli przez wiarę i chrzest jesteśmy zanurzeni w Chrystusie, to życiodajna łaska nie tylko ożywia nasze dusze, ale przez nas daje także życie innym. Świętość promieniuje i inspiruje do dobrego życia. Może się jednak zdarzyć, że nie żyjemy wiarą i zamykamy się na łaskę Bożą. Wtedy jesteśmy we wspólnocie Kościoła tylko ciałem, a nie duchem. SARMIENTOS VIVOS El Evangelio y la segunda lectura para este Quinto Domingo de Pascua hacen hincapié en la necesidad de que permanezcamos en Cristo y él permanecerá en nosotros. Esta vida compartida está representada en la imagen de la vid que tiene muchos sarmientos. Nos convertimos en sarmientos vivos de la vid, en miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo por el Bautismo, la Eucaristía y la Confirmación, por los sacramentos que nos hacen compartir la vida de Dios. La primera carta del apóstol san Juan describe el fruto de esta vid como el amor activo al prójimo: “Y este es su mandamiento: que creamos . . . y que nos amemos unos a otros” (1 Juan 3:23). En la primera lectura de los Hechos contamos con un ejemplo de una persona que participa de la vida de Cristo en la persona de san Pablo. El audaz testimonio de Pablo, incluso a riesgo de perder su propia vida, es prueba para todos de que el Espíritu del Señor resucitado verdaderamente lo llena de vida y da fruto en él. © Copyright, J. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Durante la Última Cena, Jesús dijo a sus apóstoles: “Yo soy la vid, ustedes son los sarmientos” (Juan 15:5). Jesús añade que los sarmientos (ramas) que permanecen en Él, dan mucho fruto. Según la agricultura, la vid es una parra, es decir, una planta perenne de ramas frondosas. Una parte importante de la vid son las hojas. Es obvio que una vid tiene hojas, pero Jesús no las menciona, prefiere enfocarse en los sarmientos. Las partes de la vid son las raíces, tronco, sarmientos, hojas, flores y fruto. Según esta división Jesús sería el tronco, pero él dice ser la vid completa. Esta es una imagen de la unidad que Jesús quiere entre sus seguidores. Recordemos que Jesús celebra la Última Cena con sus discípulos. La comunidad de discípulos unidos a Jesús formamos la vid. Los sarmientos o ramas conducen agua y minerales a las hojas, flores y frutos, y son útiles en tanto estén unidos a la vid. Lo mismo vale de los cristianos, discípulos de Jesús.
