Senior Nutrition Meals In Cooperation with Senior Alliance

Nutrition Service, hot lunches are availa-ble to Seniors, age 60 and over. Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 11:30 AM in St. Roch Social Hall @ $3 per meal. Reservations are due one day in advance and can be made by calling St. Roch 734-789-7161 before 11:30 AM. Hot lunches are also delivered to qualified homebound Seniors. Lunches are deliv-ered Monday through Friday with frozen meals for emergency use. Any Senior needing delivery should contact Nutrition Program 1-800-851-1454.

X-Rays Howdy! As we have concluded the

Easter season with the feast of Pentecost, we enter into the Ordinary time calendar of our Church. We begin with a couple of solemnities that help us appreciate the creative work of God in the feast of the Holy Trinity and the redemptive work of Jesus in the Body and Blood of Jesus Sunday. Both of these feasts help us relate that

God is present to us in varied ways, so that we do not find ourselves lost or for-saken, or feel abandoned, but can have confidence that the Lord is near to “who call upon him” while fed and nourished. That is an assurance that comes

through faith and it is this same faith that tells us and questions not, the unity and mystery of the Holy Trinity, as well as the real and true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Celebrate your faith in these mysteries, praying that God continue to enlighten us in our everyday living. Memorial Day While many of us will try to do a bit of

lawn work or gardening this weekend, or even clean out the garage or shed, let’s pause to remember sometime during this weekend, best on Memorial Day itself, of the lives that were offered in distant lands for the freedom that we have in our coun-try today, thus, our memorial day celebra-tion. In pausing, we could say the pledge of

allegiance to the flag of our county or sing one of many patriotic songs, or listen to CD and reflect, so that we can be more centered on more of the reason for this holiday. Sadly, many a war has been fought for

the sake of freedom for others and in dis-tant lands. Our country has rallied many times over, with the help of our allies, to assist and defend human rights and liber-ties. Many have lost their lives in this pursuit that stands strong within our na-tion. We remember them – the men and women who gave their lives so that we may live in freedom May God bless our country, bless us

and help us always to rely on God provid-ing all that we need to make our country and world peace-filled. Take care and God’s blessings.

for the cause of freedom.

May the examples of their sacrifice inspire in us the

St. Roch CSA Update

This year’s target for St. Roch’s CSA is 56,302. We ask each of our 823

families to donate $200 to this cause—we know that not each family can afford this amount. The important thing to remember is each one of us does the best we can. To date 132 families have pledged $25,142 to our CSA leaving a balance of $31,160. Please pray about this and do the best you can; alone we cannot obtain this goal but

Marriage and Family

Ministry Engaged couples across the Archdiocese

of Detroit have been preparing for sum-mer nuptials through marriage preparation programs. Catholic marriage is a calling from

God to a shared vocation of life and love. CSA gifts allow the archdiocesan Office for Marriage and Family Ministry to ad-vise couples of the steps necessary to seek marriage in the Catholic Church, includ-ing completing marriage preparation pro-grams to help build a foundation for this important sacrament. The office also offers programs that

enrich and nurture couples in every stage of the family life cycle. For more information about CSA-

Catholic Education

There are many avenues to teaching our children as they grow and progress in life. As Catholic Christians, we are also concerned of our children’s’ education in the faith. Catholic Day school is one ave-nue many parents and families have taken over the years past to ensure this as well as the local parish or diocese.

Catholic education has a long standing tradition within our Church. And over the last century and a half, the Catholic Church has built some fine centers of learning and today boasts of being able to educate children from kindergarten to college and beyond.

Here in the Detroit-Metro area, we have a couple of fine colleges or universi-ties, in the University of Detroit Mercy and Madonna University. (In the recent NCAA top 4 basketball tournament playoffs, the University of Michigan en-countered two established Catholic schools of higher learning in (St. Ignatius of) Loyola of Chicago and (St. Thomas of) Villanova).

More locally and offering Catholic education to our children and teens, we have three Catholic High Schools – Ga-briel Richard, Riverview, St Frances Cabrini, Allen Park and St Mary’s Catho-lic Central, Monroe.

All three schools are fully accredited (by MANS) as centers of learning, keep-ing the Catholic Christian faith as a moral guide in all areas of the curriculum. All three schools have certified faculty mem-bers and staff. Further, all three schools have very high percentage of their gradu-ating seniors, entering into college and at schools of their choice!

Elementary (or grade) schools are also available in our immediate area: St Jo-seph’s Trenton, St Pius X, Southgate and St John Paul II, Lincoln Park. Perhaps the most known aspect of any

level of Catholic education taught or pro-vided is that it is costly! Tuition rates are very high and the sacrifice for parents and families is also very high. (Note: it was costly for my parents to send my two sisters and myself through Catholic grade and high schools, forty to sixty years ago. The sacrifice made “paid off” in varied ways, my one sister is now, a retired reg-istered nurse with a Masters degree in nursing (and from Madonna U.), my oth-er sister is a high school educator/administrator with a Master’s degree in Education and I am ordained as priest/

Who Wants to Go to Summer Camp?

The St. Vincent de Paul conference here at St. Roch is blessed to share an op-portunity with families that might be struggling finan-cially or experiencing

some other hardship or just want to take advantage of a great summer opportunity. We are inviting children between the ages of 8 and 14 to enjoy a week of summer camp at no cost. Camp Ozanam, owned and operated by the St. Vincent de Paul Society and located on the shores of Lake Huron a few miles north of Port Huron, provides children the chance to get away, disconnect and enjoy the great outdoors and lots of activities in a safe and caring atmosphere. each family is to be registered, attend

mass regularly and offer some time, tal-ent and treasure to the parish. These three requirements are common sense oriented. I am happy as pastor to help parents

and families in their desire to receive a Catholic education for their children. I ask that attending mass here at St Roch be the central part of their response to getting help; giving God praise and

thanks for the education available to them (and the help we can offer them). (From a financial and budget point, the

Archdiocese of Detroit (AOD) credits us for our sharing in Catholic education and our overall annual Catholic Service Ap-peal (CSA) target is reduced by the total amount we contribute as a parish to our school families). So we benefit as do our families. I believe in Catholic education. And

Baptism Infant baptisms are celebrated on the second Sunday of each month at 11:30 Mass (or after). Parents requesting baptism of their child or children must contact the par-ish office, be baptized (or at least one parent), registered and active members of the parish. They must attend a baptism class at least one month prior to the baptism. Newly registered members must wait three months prior to a request. Marriage Couples seeking to be married at St. Roch’s must contact the pastor to secure a date, contacting him at least six months or more, prior to their desired date. One member of the party must be a baptized Catholic, active and registered at St. Roch’s (or through their parents). The couple will then be instructed in the mar-riage preparation program. Non-catholic members (of the party) or previously mar-ried members are not restricted from en-tering into marriage, so long as they are free to marry according to the laws of the Catholic Church. Anointing of the Sick

Any member of the parish may be anointed prior to surgery, beginning thera-pies, suffering chronic illnesses, having reached old age and/or having been hospi-talized. This sacrament of healing is for the living (conscious and alert) and can be celebrated in church, at home or in the hospital. Please contact the parish office for a visit to be arranged. Holy Land Pilgrimage
