The Five Pillars for SuccessFaith St. Richard’s embraces the Episcopalian tradition of intellectual exploration and discovery of faith that encourages all students to search for answers to challenging questions through an examination of cultures and religions, past and present.

Classic Curriculum St. Richard’s educates the whole student by promoting academic, emotional, physical and intellectual development. The curriculum reflects classic values — focusing on science, mathematics, languages, the arts and humanities — executed with innovative tools and wisdom to prepare students for the modern world.

Civic Responsibility St. Richard’s sense of community extends beyond the school. Community service and neighborhood partnerships are woven into the curriculum. St. Richard’s students learn not only to respect themselves and others but also to embrace their responsibility to the community.

Global Readiness St. Richard’s begins preparing students early for global citizenship. The wide range of students’ faiths, cultures, races and ethnicities creates a rich, diverse community. An award-winning language program begins in PK, preparing our students in Grade 5 for a two-week exchange experience in France. Beginning in Grade 6, the language program expands to include Latin for all students with an option of French or Spanish. St. Richard’s students are well equipped to confidently explore the wider world.

Leadership St. Richard’s prides itself in preparing students to be leaders. Students in all grades learn to be confident public speakers through school-wide performances and presentations such as the Kindergarten Nativity Play and Constitution Day Assembly. Older students are school role models for the entire school with traditions such as the Grade 8 buddy program, helping to ensure a close sense of community.

There’s a saying about “blooming where you’re planted.” But any dedicated and loving gardener can tell you that planting your seeds in the richest soil yields the most incredible growth. As a parent, you’re the gardener — nurturing, growing and watching your children turn their faces toward the sun. At St. Richard’s Episcopal School, we give your child the space to plant down deep roots sown in decades of history and classic values. Our Lower Division program builds a foundation of language arts, literacy, science, mathematics and French, all guided by our Five Pillars for Success.

“The Lower Division at St. Richard’s provides our two daughters with a safe environment as they grow and explore. Our girls are challenged academically but also nurtured in the classroom by teachers who are approachable and warm. They are encouraged to be themselves, and there is an emphasis on being a kind and generous individual that echoes what we teach at home.”

— SRES parent, Kelly Colby

Curiosity, exploration and a thirst for knowledge. These are qualities that deserve to be nurtured in all children. That is why at St. Richard’s, we embrace our unique location and take full advantage of our proximity to educational, social and cultural hubs. These include the world-class Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Indianapolis Public Library and many more. St. Richard’s School is central to the places in our city where art is being created, music is being composed and life is blooming with vibrancy. This means we are also in a prime location to attract very special guests such as musicians, published authors, scientists and experts in a vast array of fields.

The World Inside the Classroom

Through the classic learning phases of grammar, logic and rhetoric, St. Richard’s students acquire not only content and critical thinking skills but also the tools needed for a lifetime of learning. They learn “how to learn” in the most tried and trusted of ways. A focus on phonics and reading fundamentals in the primary grades leads to the ability to critically analyze classic literature in the Middle Division.

A mastery of math facts in the early years facilitates complex problem solving. Critical thinking is emphasized in the inquiry-based science curriculum, which teaches scientific observation methods. Underpinning this core curriculum are clear behavioral expectations, a strong physical education program, and a focus on highly developed confidence in both written and spoken word.

Beyond the Dragon Gate

Our Lower Division students are paired with both younger and older classmates through a formal mentorship program that nurtures lifelong friendships and places students in a position to be both learners and leaders. Grade 2 students, for example, have reading buddies in PK and meet on a regular basis. Grade 1 and 8 buddies form longstanding friendships that last well beyond St. Richard’s. Our alumni speak with great affection about the relationships that have been developed along their Dragon journey.

Blooming with Character Growing Global CitizensWe prepare our young learners to be ready for the world and to embrace a myriad of cultures through our curriculum, special assemblies and traditions. Each year we host the Global Readiness International Fair and Parade of Nations, which highlights the experiences and backgrounds unique to students and families with cultural ties outside of the United States. Our Grade 4 students also participate in the Indianapolis St. Patrick’s Day Parade each year and salute the Irish as well as other nationalities represented at the school.

Children take French as a core class in the Lower Division, preparing them for the Grade 5 French exchange program. This lays the foundation of learning a new language and is followed with Latin and the opportunity to also learn Spanish in the Middle Division.

Flowering in FaithWe are a faith-influenced learning institution, and our spiritual values touch everything we do in a positive and loving way. From Episcopal chapel services that uplift and inspire to service opportunities that expose students to a world that may be outside their own experience, our goal is to instill strong values, provide learning and giving opportunities and grow a community of faithful learners and thinkers.

We believe that each of our students’ unique background and experience contribute to a colorful landscape of stories, talents and abilities. We offer a broad range of specialty programs and enrichment opportunities that appeal to almost all interests.

For your budding artist, we have a mixed-medium art lab that features a large kiln, sophisticated technology including 3D printers, plus opportunities to hold art shows at the Central Library. Our Singing Dragons and our chamber orchestra perform on a regular basis both on the school grounds and around the community. For active learners, our physical education program promotes the adoption of healthy habit and lifestyle choices and emphasizes the importance of play. After-school intramural sports, including basketball and soccer, are offered to students through Grade 4 in preparation for Middle Division athletic teams. Our climbing wall and physical education classes expose students to lifelong sports and encourage them to participate. During after-school hours, students are encouraged to explore activities such as chess club, ballet, gymnastics, private piano lessons and many more.

“Not only do we love St. Richard’s, but we also love the lower division. I am always reminded, ‘it takes a village....’ St. Richard’s is a village that I am proud my family has an opportunity to belong. In the lower division, the children are taught by the examples of the older students (buddies) and in turn they are able to be examples (big buddies) to the early childhood division.” — SRES parent, Clinton Sharp
