FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners,

With all the bad press priests, bishops and the Catholic-Church-in-general have been getting recently, it was uplifting to see the secular media heap justified praise on two Catholic priests who recently died.

One was the 90-year-old Msgr. Thomas Leonard (of the New York Archdiocese), described by The New York Times as a ―priest with his feet on the ground‖. He brought new life to a struggling Upper West Side parish, and before that, in Washington Heights, transformed a vacant convent into a home for babies who were H.I.V. positive.

With the wit and edge of an Irish politician, he once openly criticized the ―antiquated leader-ship‖ of the church. ―We have no one with legs‖, he observed. ―And, as the Babe said, the legs go first.‖

Unlike the activist Msgr. Leonard, the other priest was a contemplative—a Trappist monk, Fa-ther Thomas Keating. While ill in his youth, he made a deal with God to become a priest if he could live to 21. As a result, he cut ties with his affluent family and walked away from the cushy life-style of a Manhattan home and a Long Island estate, and served God in the solitude of a monas-tery.

He is best known for developing a type of praying called ―centering prayer‖, sometimes de-scribed as resting in God. When you pray, Keating stressed, God is already there—you are not just sitting in a void. Asian spirituality highlights ―mindfulness‖, but Centering Prayer is more ―heartfulness‖.

Centering Prayer Groups are now in 39 countries, not to mention those individuals who prac-tice it on their own.

So, even in the secular press, it’s not all bad news about the Church we love.

-Father Jerry Jecewiz

PRAYER

FOR

HEALING

VICTIMS

OF ABUSE

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just: You gave your only Son to save us by the blood of his cross. Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear our cries as we agonize over the harm done to our brothers and sisters. Breathe wisdom into our prayers, soothe restless hearts with hope, steady shaken spirits with faith: Show us the way to justice and wholeness, enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy. Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace, so that we may act with justice and find peace in you. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

FAMILY MASS CHOIR INVITE We are ready to start a new year for St. Raphael’s Family Mass Choir and we need your talents. The children and adults working with the choir have done an excellent job over the recent years and have made significant contributions to the liturgical life of St. Raphael’s parish. Children in grades 2 and above who are ready and willing to sing are encouraged to join us. We would also be interested in having adults and high school students participate. The practices are held one or two Monday’s a month at 7:30PM and the choir will be singing at the monthly Family Masses, Christmas Eve, and other appropriate occasions. Dates and other specific information will follow. The only requirements are that you attend practice and Mass and behave appropri-ately. We continue to look for adults who are willing to assist in the singing, who may play a musical instrument or who are willing to help with other support functions, such as transportation. If you are interested please fill out this form and return it to the par-ish rectory, to Sister Christine at the Religious Education Program, Joe Becker or Jan Wnek after Mass.
