January 12, 2020 The Baptism of the Lord
Over all [other virtues] put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. — Colossians 3:14
This is My Beloved Son This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).

Christmas Thanks As the Christmas season draws to a close with today’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, I would like to thank everyone who helped make our Christmas liturgical celebrations wonderful. Thank you to those who decorated the church for the feast days and the parish staff who helped prepare the parish for Christmas. Thank you to the music ministry for the many extra hours of practice you put in as you prepared for Christmas. The music was beautiful for all the Masses. Thanks to everyone! Today’s Feast – Bapt ism of the Lord As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord in our Mass this weekend, it is an opportunity for all of us to reflect upon our own baptisms. By virtue of our baptism, we are the beloved daughters and sons of God. As those beloved children, we are also called to live our baptismal call of discipleship. This does not mean that everyone is called to be a minister in the church, but it does mean that everyone is called to share their gifts with the church and the larger community. What might be one way that each of us can share our time, talent or treasure in a greater way this new year?

First Reading A reading from the Book of Isaiah
Isaiah 42:1—4, 6—7
Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. a bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching.
I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from con-finement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Second Reading
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles Acts 10:34—38
Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered in the house of Cornelius, saying: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. You know the word that he sent to the Israelites as he pro-claimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anoint-ed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Matthew 3:13—17
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him. After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstan-tial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was Incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. 5

December 15th Blood Dr ive Our December 15th Blood Drive had a great turn out with 26 donors. Donating blood during the Holidays is very important with so many people distracted by all the events there is a critical shortage of blood. I wanted also to acknowledge the participation/co-sponsorship of the blood drive by the St Pius X Girl Scouts who brought in donors too. Parish's successful programs for the church and our community.

Mass Time Changing As has been previously announced in the Parish Bulletin, effective January 5, 2020, the first Mass on Sunday will be at 8:00am, changing from the current 8:30am. All the other Mass times remain the same. The reason for this change is to create a block of time on Sunday morning (9:00-10:15am) that can be used for various events and activities. Faith and Families will now be in this block of time and will include breakfast. There will be the opportunity for adult education during this time as well.
March for L i fe in Washington, D.C. This year, our St. Pius X CYO will participate in the National March for Life in Washington D.C. on Friday, January 24th. The Scholastic Book Fair will continue each day during school hours through Friday, January 31. Join us in encouraging our school children to read and helping our library to grow through profits from the Book Fair.
Peace Prayer Walk On Tuesday, January 28, St. Pius X Parish will host a Peace Walk, which is sponsored by Catholic Charities. The event will consist of less than a 1mile walk through the neighborhood with a few stops along the way to say brief prayers for peace. It is intended to be a visual representation of peacemakers in our commu-nity. The St. Pius X CYO will provide refreshments at the conclusion of the Peace Walk. Check the bulletin for more details as the walk approaches.
Prayer for Pr iests The ministry offers prayers for individual priests, as a sign of solidarity with the Priesthood. This entails the commitment of one hour each month, when possible before the Blessed Sacrament, for the intentions of the priest. Also, through prayer, it supports the development of vocations. If you are currently scheduled in the Adoration Chapel and not part of this ministry, we invite you consider joining it. More information about the ministry or sign-up is available in the Adoration Chapel. You may also call Linda and Terry Walsh at 504-288-4061.
Lord, Teach Me to Pray Lord, Teach Me to Pray (LTMTP) is an Ignatian prayer series designed to meet the desire for on-going spiritual growth, offering opportunity to respond to the call to holiness, and to develop a deeper commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord. In facilitated faith-sharing prayer communities, the Lord, himself, teaches us to pray. Part 1 of LTMTP meets once a week for 12 weeks. LTMTP Part 1 for Women will meet on Mondays starting January 27 at 10:30am and LTMTP Part 1 for Women and Men will meet on Sundays at 9:30am starting January 26.
