The Baptism of the Lord

Living Our Faith….. Parish Social Ministry Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. Today we hear how John changes the focus of attention to Jesus. He is the one that is

“mightier… the one that will baptize (us) with the Holy Spirit and fire.” John calls his followers to focus and follow the real Messiah. We

too, like John, need to take the focus off ourselves and direct it to the real Messiah, Jesus. We are called through our baptism to manifest

God’s presence through our daily dying of self by constantly redirecting our own expectations so that we keep focused on the One

“mightier than I” who comes to others, now, through us. This is the call to serve. We must be the heralds in this world while dying to self

as we conform ourselves to God’s will.

Speaking of service (and ministry)… we need liturgical ministers. Each year we celebrate confirmations and I dare think that maybe we

will have more ministers come from those classes. Yet, it doesn’t happen. We should have two lectors in every Mass but sometimes we

are lucky if we have one. We should have the number of Ministers of the Eucharist that we need, and we do, but they are the same people

week after week. And Altar Servers… we need at least three for every Mass yet, many times it is Father and Mr. Terryo (and when he is

not here, we might get some brave soul that will get up and serve). We need Liturgical Ministers. We need brothers and sisters that are

sincere and loving not necessarily perfect. When I worked in the Navajo Reservation I asked one of the Navajo why they always finished

their rugs with a different color thread, had they run out of the color thread they were using or had they made a mistake. His response was

that it was not a mistake; it had been done on purpose. They believe that only God is perfect and that there had to be something wrong

with what they created. They could not compare themselves to God. So, if you do not want to serve as a liturgical minister because you

are afraid of making a mistake, remember the Navajo, only God is perfect, we just have to be sincere and willing to let God use us as we

serve our brothers and sisters. Call and leave a message for J-P Rodriguez (713)473-9484 if you are interested in serving.

Extraordinary Everyday Catholics

Jan. 17 – St. Anthony: Abbot, Memorial: considered the Father of monasticism. He chose voluntary poverty and seclusion so as focus his

life solely to the Lord.

Viviendo nuestra fe……

mismas personas semana tras semana.

The Baptism of the Lord

Find the Missal (Ordinary of the Mass) at 150 in Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song

The Baptism of the Lord

First Reading IS 42:1-4, 6-7

Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he

shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. a bruised reed he shall not

break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. I, the

LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people,

a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in

darkness.

Responsorial Psalm PS 29 R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Second Reading TI 2:11-14; 3:4-7

Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately,

justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, who

gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good. When the

kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, He

saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so

that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.

Gospel LK 3:15-16, 21-22

The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all,

saying, "I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will

baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,

heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my

beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."

El Misal (Ordinario de la Misa) esta en Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song a Partir de 150

Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor

Primera lectura Is 42, 1-4. 6-7

En él he puesto mi espíritu

Salmo Responsorial Salmo 28 R. Te alabamos, Señor.

Segunda Lectura Ti 2, 11-14; 3, 4-7
