Our part of Kentucky is a lovely place to call home. Even more so, this wonderful, Spirit-filled place called St. Philip’s is an amazing place to call home. This fall has so much won- derful activity happening here: activity that gives us opportunities to engage our neighboring congregations, welcome new faces at St. Philip’s, draw closer to one another within the church, and go deeper into our own, individual faith journeys. Here’s a short list of some of what’s happening at St. Philip’s: Gathering and giving thanks for the animals in our lives: both on Sunday October 1 and on Saturday, October 21 St. Philip’s gathered together (2-legged & 4-legged members) to celebrate our lives together. The Oct 1 service was just St. Philip’s; however several of our neigh- boring churches (Harrodsburg United Presbyterian; Harrodsburg Christian Church; Harrodsburg United Methodist Church) expressed interest in this service too, so a joint service was held on Oct 21 on the lawn outside the Presbyterian Church. Many of us are blessed by the dogs, cats, hors- es, and other animal companions in our lives: these services set aside time to focus on and give heartfelt thanks for these relational gifts from God. Oktoberfest: Oct 13 – 15 was Harrodsburg’s 2nd annual Oktoberfest. It took place on Main Street, less than 1 block from our parish office. This year I was honored to be asked to bless the beer for the festival. At 5 pm on Friday the 13th J, I stood at the intersec- tion of Main & Poplar streets & opened the festival with prayer & holy water! After that I had the opportunity to be with the crowds, serving beer as a part of the Rotary Club, which was a lot of fun. The blessing that I did not anticipate, however, was the ways that my being there (in my clergy collar) allowed me to be a counselor & pastoral presence to people who would not normally attend St. Philip’s (or perhaps church at all?). People that I would not otherwise have met approached me as I served & asked for prayers or just took the time to chat and ask “God questions.” I left the festival that evening with my heart full of thanks for these encounters & pray that others were blessed as much as they blessed me. What a gift that God puts us in these places, to do this wonderful work! Corn Maze: On Sunday, Oct 22 the children and youth of St. Philip’s, along with friends and family, went to Divine’s Corn Maze for fall fun. Our children & youth leaders have done this for several years and it is always a fun time of connecting with our younger members and watching the delight in their eyes as they navigate the corn mazes, meet new farm animals, ride on the zip line, and realize again that they are critical, valued members of our church family. What an AMAZING Place to Call Home! Today it feels like fall: the temperature is getting cooler; the first cup of morning coffee tastes just a little richer and better; the maples in the yard are gradually shifting from green to a deep crimson. Our part of Kentucky is a lovely place to call home. Even more so, this wonderful, Spirit-filled place called St. Philip’s is an amazing place to call home. This fall has so much won-derful activity happening here: activity that gives us opportunities to engage our neighboring congregations, welcome new faces at St. Philip’s, draw closer to one another within the church, and go deeper into our own, individual faith journeys.

Here’s a short list of some of what’s happening at St. Philip’s:

Gathering and giving thanks for the animals in our lives: both on Sunday October 1 and on Saturday, October 21 St. Philip’s gathered together (2-legged & 4-legged members) to celebrate our lives together. The Oct 1 service was just St. Philip’s; however several of our neigh-boring churches (Harrodsburg United Presbyterian; Harrodsburg Christian Church; Harrodsburg United Methodist Church) expressed interest in this service too, so a joint service was held on Oct 21 on the lawn outside the Presbyterian Church. Cardinal Meadows Update October 2017

The Cardinal Meadows Board met October 11 to discuss a resolution letter of our intent to award pending work to the FEZ Group, LLC regarding the renovation of the complex. The work is pending funding in the form

of a Grant, or more likely a long-term “low-or-no” interest loan (this is a no-risk loan – see me for details).

Present were Kenneth Klun, Terry Taylor, the Rev. Amy Meaux, the Rev. Peter Doddema, Tammy Thomas,

and Shawn Robinson. Absent were Allison Robinson, Jim Minteer, and Linda Minteer. The need for the intent

letter is simple; Trinity and St. Philips need for the FEZ Group (affiliated with Winterwood our property

manager) to provide funding for an Architect in the approximate amount of $70,000, to begin formal layout and

design of project features. Neither Trinity nor St. Philips has that money readily available, but it is needed for

the State’s process. Accordingly, the Board voted unanimously to provide said letter. The letter of intent

included many stipulations on our intent and regulatory integrity checks. So we have to wait for funding, but

time is not on our side. Because of the State’s process, our entire application and approval will be withdrawn

later this year if not funded and we have to start over. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. If you want more

details, please contact Greg Yankey, Board Chairperson at 859/325-3240.

United Thank Offering Ingathering is November 19 The Episcopal United Thank Offering is a ministry with a 125 year history. It was organized by Episcopal

Women who were a prime support of the missionary outreach program of the church. The little blue mite boxes, known affectionately as "Blue Boxes" were utilized to collect prayers and grateful offerings from the women of the church in thanksgiving for the many blessings of this life. All parishes are urged to participate by recogniz-ing our blessings and generously contributing our offerings to our Blue Boxes. Subsequently the money collected, the Ingathering, is sent directly to the diocese coordinator and ultimately to the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Episcopal Church, the award granting body. Every Diocese of the Episcopal Church has received at least one UTO Grant. Our own parish, St. Philip's, received a grant when the Parish Hall "carport annex" was enclosed! The boxes and donation envelopes, along with an informative booklet, were distributed at church on September 17th. If you didn’t get one, there are some in the back of the church. The St. Philip’s Ingathering to collect the boxes is November 19th. This will be the day to return your Blue Box to church. The Blue Box serves as a visual reminder to offer thanks for our blessings big and small and to acknowledge that all of our gifts come from God and are for the glory of God and the building of God's Kingdom.

Rags to Riches Booth

The Vendor’s booth is now at Rags to Riches in Harrodsburg. We now have room to take donations of larger items and are ready for Christmas trinkets! To check out the booth, find the St. Philip’s sign marking it toward the back of the building. Thanks for all of the generous donations! We are averaging $100 per month in

income for St. Philip’s. Call the church office if you need someone to pick up your donations!

North point Christmas Fund The chaplains out at North Point are collecting money for the inmates’ Christmas. They are working to raise

$3000, which with ~1200 inmates is slightly less than $3 per inmate for Christmas. Many of the inmates have no family or friend support - they receive nothing from the outside except this Christmas package. If you would like to donate, you may put a check in the offering plate marked “Northpoint” or mail by Wednesday, November 1 to:

What an AMAZING Place to Call Home! (cont. from page 1) October & November: Stewardship Season. Every year at this time, St. Philip’s sets aside a few weeks to reflect individ-ually on where God has blessed us with time, talent, & treasure and on how we invest these gifts in the world around us. When we take the time to stop and look at our basic lives: do we have enough to eat? Do we have clothes to wear? Do we have adequate housing? Do we have purpose? If we can say yes to these things, then we are blessed in ways that many around the world are not. Recognizing this, we can begin approaching life with a spirit of gratitude: a gradually increasing awareness that we are truly, wondrously blessed. Though each of us has a lot of responsibility as well (e.g. family & friends that rely on us, medical bills, car re-pairs, etc.), beginning our self-reflection at a place of saying thank you allows us honest evaluation of the many, many areas of our lives. This is a time to ask questions like: how am I spending my time? Do the things you invest your time in feed you? Drain you? Are there areas of your life (relationships, volunteering, job, etc.) that used to be good for you but have gradual-ly become less so? Are you feeling moved to reallocate your time – to try something new (and perhaps a little risky or unset-tling)?? Similarly with your gifts and talents: are they being used in ways that feed you or that drain you? When our actions lead us to deep satisfaction and fulfillment, this is usually a good sign that we’re doing what God calls us to – what we’re created for! With our finances, too: how do you use the money God gives us? Are you called to make changes in 2018? Our Vestry (governing board), ably led by Senior Warden Jamie Wince is leading and guiding us through this Stewardship Season. They are sharing their own stories with us each Sunday (and for several of them, public speaking is very uncomfortable: I am so grateful for their courage!) and through both word & example encouraging us to see where God is calling us to give to St. Philip’s in 2018. Cards that list volunteering opportunities and cards for making a monetary pledge for 2018 go out shortly: I ask that you give them prayerful consideration. The Vestry develops our budget and guides our ministries for 2018 based on your responses. Above and beyond giving at St. Philip’s, however my desire as your Pastor (Pastor comes from an old, Latin word for shepherd) is that you are as spiritually healthy as possible. Stewardship is one good way to clean, repair, and reju-venate our souls. When we realize all that God gives us each day & do the good, deep work of examining this and discerning where God wants us to invest those gifts (St. Philip’s or otherwise), we find a source of daily joy & renewal that feels magical. I find that source living, giving, & working among you & our wider community. I fall in bed tired & content each evening. Thank you for calling my family & I here: we are wildly fulfilled by the many unique and beautiful ways that God allows us to give, serve, and grow in this AMAZING place that we call home! :) With Joy, Father Peter

2017Fall Stewardship Sweep Concludes on November 12th

Stewardship is about transforming people’s lives with the gifts God has given

us. Stewardship doesn’t just happen in the fall, it happens every day of the year—BUT the

‘sweep’ is the time of year that we reflect more on those gifts God has given us and how we

use them to serve God and others.

This year’s sweep theme is Journey to Generosity

The Vestry members will continue to share their stewardship stories as we conclude this

year’s sweep. Please remember the following dates:

Oct. 29: Pledge and Time/Talent brochures distributed

Nov. 12: Annual meeting to vote on Vestry members and Convention deputies,

Pledge, Time/Talent/Exploration Brochure Ingathering followed by Fellowship and

Food!

I ask that you continue to keep I Peter 4:10 in mind, “Each of you should use whatever gifts

you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

Yours in Christ, Jamie Wince, Senior Warden
