Sam Vuille RetiresAs many of you are aware, St. Petersburg Coun-try Club Tennis Director Sam Vuille is retiring after 30 years of great service to the Club. Sam has definitely left a positive mark on the Club, which is evidenced by the Tennis Center being named in his honor. As much as Sam is going to be missed, it is time to start a new chapter. Please join me in wel-coming Tom Judson as SPCC’s new Tennis Di-rector. Tom is a native Texan and played on the collegiate level at Texas A&M, where he was elected to the University’s Sports Hall of Fame. After spending some time on the ATP Tour, Tom launched a career as a country club professional. Over the last seven years, Tom has worked for ClubCorp at Lakeway World of Tennis in Austin, Texas and Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club in Tampa, Florida. Tom currently resides in the City of St. Peters-burg and is especially excited to join the man-agement team at our Club. He has transitioned into his new role and looks forward to bringing his vast experience and programming to SPCC. Please take a moment to stop by the Tennis Cen-ter and welcome Tom to our Club. And of course, we’re going to make sure Sam goes out in style with a party that’s worthy of all he has contributed to SPCC over the years. Stay tuned for details, we’re in the process of fi-nalizing the date and time for Sam’s retirement party.
Best Regards,Mike KiernanPresident of St. Petersburg Country ClubBoard of Governors

Dear Tennis Supporter: The 14th Annual Raymond James Super-Senior Grand Prix will be held at the St. Petersburg Country Club from February 26th, through March 4th, 2018. Eight age divisions (55--59, 60--64, 65--69, 70--74, 75--79, 80--84, 85--89, and 90+) will be played in both men’s singles and doubles. The Category II designation means the tournament is second in importance only to the USTA National championships. This is the only senior men’s tournament of this quality in the Tampa Bay Area and one of only three in Florida. Close to 300 players from all corners of the U.S., Canada, and other countries will come to St. Petersburg to participate in this event. Several of these players will have top world rankings in their age divisions. The level of play is very high even in the older age divisions. These talented seniors are truly inspiring to watch. The players compete for USTA ranking points and for prize money. To help make this tournament more enjoyable for the players and fans, we are seeking additional sponsors. Half of your contribution will go towards prize money for the players (to help cover their travel expenses), and half to the club (to defray the costs of running the tournament). The following levels of participation are available, with recognition for the sponsors as shown. (Please note that these sponsorships will not qualify as charitable donations, but most businesses and professionals should be able to write off the donation as an advertising and promotional expense.)
Your name or that of your business will be listed in the tournament program.Your business card will be printed in the tournament program.Receive a quarter page business ad and name on tournament T-shirt.Receive half page business ad, name on tournament T-shirt, and one tournament T-shirtReceive full page business ad, name on tournament T-shirt, one tournament T-shirt, and two tickets to the player dinner-dance. A reusable 2’ x 4’ banner can be added for an additional $60.
If you would like to be a new sponsor, please provide the following information when signing up: Name, Business, Address, City, Zip Code, Phone and Email. (Repeat sponsors do not need to provide this informa-tion—all we need is your check!) Please make out your check to Super-Seniors Tournament. Mailing ad-dress: SPCC Tennis Pro Shop, 2100 DeSoto Way S., St. Petersburg, FL 33712. If you have a business card or ad copy for the program, please enclose or email it to us at [email protected]. Thank you very much for your support of quality tennis in the Tampa Bay area. Your generosity will help make the Raymond James Super-Senior Tournament an even bigger success this year.

on Saturday and finished with 78 to fall into a second-place tie with Bob Mattiace from the University of North Florida. USF senior Cristian DiMarco, son of longtime PGA Tour player Chris DiMarco, shot 70 Saturday for a 214 total and the lead.
Our 92nd New Year’s Invitational ended Sunday, January 7th, with Hayden Buckley, the 2017 champion, prevailing over local standout and Florida State golf team member Greyson Porter. Hayden, a senior at Missouri, became only the third player in over 50 years to successfully defend his title. The others were Buddy Alexander and Sam Horsfield.Cold, breezy weather provided a challenge all four days, Thursday’s first round being particularly tough on the field. Only two players managed to best par Thursday, Cal Berkeley’s Ben Doyle and Tyler Johnson of Middle Tennessee State, both with 71’s. On Friday Greyson Porter played the round of the week, a bogey-free 65, which gave him a 4-shot lead at 138. Porter struggled early
Sunday remained cool and windy. Porter managed a 2-under par 34 on the front nine to gain a one- shot lead on DiMarco and two over Hayden Buckley, who had matched Porter’s 34, and Daniel Robinson, a senior at Central Florida, who did one better with 33. DiMarco’s early round putting woes continued on the back nine and Robinson was unable to hole a short putt for eagle at 16. At that point it became a two-man race between Buckley and Porter. Buckley’s chip-in at 15 for birdie forced Porter to make a 10-footer for par to maintain a one-shot lead. Both players missed short birdie putts at 16 and Greyson’s 12-footer for birdie at 17 came up a couple of rolls short. Hayden was short of the green in two on 18 but hit a great pitch which stopped a foot from the hole. Greyson’s second was pin-high but wide right and his pitch from a sandy lie was far short of the hole, result-ing in a difficult two-putt par. Hayden holed his birdie putt and the two were tied at 286.

10 Nyi(Continued) Both players hit good drives on number 1, the first hole of sudden death. Their second shots were 18-20 feet from the hole. Greyson, slightly away, was pin high and rolled his breaking putt close enough for a sure par. Hayden’s putt, straight up the slope, rolled in for the winning birdie three. It was an exciting finish, both players are fine gentlemen who showed a lot of fortitude over four trying days. The Mid-Amateur Division, for those championship division players 25 and over, was won by Seminole’s Devin Hernandez with an even 300 total, beating Pasadena’s Kyle McCarthy by one shot. In the Senior Division, which ended Saturday after 54 holes, Jimmy Jones successfully defended his title, shooting 223 to defeat Gordon Marshall of Bradenton by one shot. This was the same margin Jones prevailed by in 2017, also over Marshall.A sizable crowd followed the championship group on Sunday. Our course received many accolades from par-ticipants, particularly for the excellent condition of the greens. Ryan Franklin continues to do a great job for us. Terry Decker and his staff, along with the ladies scoring team, made the tournament run smoothly. Our clubhouse staff provided good food and friendly service for players, friends and families alike. It’s an event the club can and should be proud of.
