THE SPECIAL INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS for the month of January
UNIVERSAL: Promotion of World Peace We pray for peace throughout the world.
May Christians, followers of other religions, and all people of goodwill,
promote peace and justice in the world.
JANUARY: MONTH OF THE HOLY NAME The month of January is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus.
The name of Jesus is important. It means “God saves.” His Family does not choose the name Jesus; rather, God gives it
to him before his birth: “You are to name him Jesus,” the angel tells Joseph in a dream, “because he will save his people
from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Jesus’ name is both his identity and his mission. Jesus’ name is powerful: “Whatever you ask in my name, I will do,” he tells his disciples (John14:13). In the letter to the Philippians, Saint Paul sings a hymn to the power of Jesus’ name: “God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, / that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth and under the earth / and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:9-11).
