St Peter’s Eco Educators then ran the afternoon session, which included a presentation created by the students on the causes and problems of global warming and games that explored potential solutions to

As a teenage student walking to and from school every morning and afternoon, my levels of awareness rise significantly. Behind this sentiment, is the reality of what the world outside of school has come to. Violence, aggression and cruelty, escalating from verbal to physical abuse, are a few of the many reasons we fear for our safety.

Many teenage voices like mine, wish to have the ability to speak openly, but are afraid of being frowned upon, almost as if we are being perceived as oblivious to the unpleasant and distressing events occurring around the world and locally. However, what remains unacknowledged, is that we are the main victims of tragedies, such as knife crime and gun crime, whether we are on the street corners or in takeaways. Avoiding isolated paths and alleyways just doesn’t seem to be helpful enough, as shocking statistics have shown that incidents of stabbing have increased across England and Wales by 22% in a year, with children as young as 13 among the victims; why not make this one of the main priorities in society?

Local areas, such as the popular City Centre in Manchester and Longsight, have become hotspots for offences, with the involvement of sharp objects; mainly knives. Not long ago, on the 31st of October 2018, children were out trick or treating for Halloween, and watched in horror, while being traumatised by a teenager being brutally stabbed on the street. An innocent 17 year old, knifed multiple times during the sickening attack on Lingmoor Walk in Hulme, has left many members of his family dwelling upon this ferocious strike. Luckily, the victim remains living, but just imagine if this was not the case, and instead, his life had been taken.

On the whole, I believe that the police and schools are taking notice of these events and are doing numerous

things in order to decrease the numbers of occurrences. Recently, we were given the opportunity to participate in the Make Your Mark Campaign ensuring we feel that our opinions and perceptions really do matter. At St Peter’s, 943 students took part in this, and 199 of us voted to put an end to knife crime. This category managed to get the highest number of votes, which goes to show our levels of concern and worries but at least we know it will be discussed in parliament this month.

Shortly after collecting these shocking results, no obstacle prevented the teachers, as they almost immediately educated us on this topic in assemblies. Support devices, such as alarms have been given to each individual, male and female, as a way of protection to and from school. As well as this, the organisation Street Doctors were invited to our school, to allow us a better understanding of the dangers we might face and how to save lives as a result! Thankfully, our safety is clearly a priority!

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of St Peter’s

We close for the Christmas holiday at 3.05pm on Friday 21st December 2018 and re-open at 8.45am on Monday 7th January 2019.

There has been an enormous amount happening in school this term: we began with some very good examination results; there have been a variety of enterprise events with our partner primaries; sporting successes continue; our students have been involved in supporting a number of charities by contributing generously; and we round off the term with our school Christmas concert, cinema trips and talent shows. In the midst of all the activity at this time of year, we also focus on the true meaning of Christmas through our Advent liturgies. I hope you enjoy reading this snapshot of school life and that you and your family have a happy and a holy Christmas.

Yours sincerely

A group of students from St Peter’s spent a week getting to know Manchester Town Hall and learning about the many job roles involved in the completion of a major heritage project.

The students had an inside view of the project which will see the building repaired, refurbished and partly restored for future generations.

The had the opportunity to climb to the top of the clock tower and complete activities designed to introduce them to engineering and architectural work.

At the end of the week the students were presented with a certificate from the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Cllr June Hitchen.

Our Manchester - Work Experience Project

The following poem was written by a Year 8 student in remembrance of the fallen.

Heal the Wound by Izodosa Osarenmwinda

A chain of death few withstand,Between barbed-wire in no-man’s land.A hint of hope provokes elation; But there’s no time for celebration.

Heal the wound hatred has formed, Solve the problem till transformed,Be the light in spite of darkness, Elevate optimism; emit brightness.

A hundred years on, lost souls declareRemember commitments, remember to care, Life carries on as decades pass, Poppies bloom in Flanders amongst wild grass.

Lest we Forget

Christmas MarketsOn Monday 26th of November the Year 9 Travel and Tourism class were able to go and visit the Christmas markets in Manchester. This was a part of our tourist attraction topic. We visited the many stalls and some of us tested different types of foods. We went to understand more about the markets, why it exists and why people from different countries come to visit. It is also known as the German markets because many of the stalls are run by German people. We saw lots of different types of cultures, people and food from all over including lots of delicious deserts. “It smelt and felt like Christmas time!” said Camilla. “It was a lovely trip and helped us understand about the market and why it attracts people including ourselves.”

St Peter’s Named in the Top 30 Schools for Sport in the UKSt Peter’s has been named 27th best school in the country for sport, beating thousands of other schools to make the illustrious list as named by the PE and School Sport Magazine. This is the 6th year in succession that St Peter’s has been named in the top 100. This is a result of the hard work of students and PE staff collectively.

Contributing to this success has seen an immensely busy first term of sporting action. There have been over 70 fixtures and events seeing over 400 students engaging in clubs and fixtures. There have been multiple successes in a range of sports with the year’s first silverware being

collected in the Indoor Athletics Championships for Years 10 & 11 boys and girls teams.

The Year 10 and 11 Girls Netball teams have both made impressive starts to their season and both are well placed in their leagues. The boy’s football competitions are well underway, as too are the basketball events as all teams reach the latter rounds. After Christmas will be just as busy as Cheerleading, Rounders and Outdoor Athletics commence. Look out for further updates in the 2019 Easter Newsletter.
