ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH SEPTEMBER 6, 2020CHILLICOTHE, OHIO TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A Word from your Pastor:Dear Parishioners:We are hearing more and more that the challenges of COVID-19 are going to be with us for a while. We will be carrying this reality and the effects it has on our lives for a long, long time. As many have said, it will be with us for “the long haul.” Many years ago, I read a saying that has stayed with me: “What happens to you is not as important as how you respond to it.” I believe this bit of wisdom is appropriate to what we are experiencing in the face of the pandemic. Our collective response to the situation in which we find ourselves is far more important than all that is happening to us. It has been pointed out that human beings can live with any circumstances as long as they have a meaningful “why.” We believe that the most meaningful reason for life has been shared with us: a relationship with the God of the Universe that lasts through time and Eternity. Our Catholic life is meant to be truly “catholic,” that is, “universal” – applicable in every situation and for everyone. Since that is so, we can be confident that we have the wherewithal to meet whatever challenges come our way. The current situation is no different.Growing up in a family of nine children – eight on earth and one already in Heaven – I learned from my parents and my siblings that we could accomplish more together than separately. Watching old videos (“family movies” upgraded now to DVDs), I am often struck by just how well we did together. Even now, my family gets together to visit at Dad’s home every Sunday, as many as are able to do so. The generations spend time together and learn that life is not easy in any time, but we can make it. I recognize that same spirit among the people of Ross and Pike Counties. May we continue to reach for the grace that God supplies and may we open our hearts to care for others who don’t know yet that they can make it, with a little bit of help.
Rev. Timothy M. HayesPastor of Chillicothe St. Mary, Chillicothe St. Peter and Waverly, St. Mary, Queen of the Missions

With the start of the new school year, Fr. Hayes will continue to celebrate Mass at 8:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s. There will be Mass at the school at 9:30 a.m. each Friday. However, with the COVID-19 restrictions, outside visitors are not permitted to attend Mass and is limited to the students and teachers.
St. Gabriel Catholic Radio welcomes Bishop Robert J. Brennan, Father Steven Beseau, Rector of the Josephinum, Father William Hahn, New Vocations Director and several priests of the Diocese of Columbus for the Fall Spirit Drive from Wednesday, September 16th-Friday, September 18th from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tune in – support our Bishop, priests and AM 820. Call 614-459-4820 or go online to https://stgabrielradio.com/.
Help needed! Since this “COVID” experience of Mass is continuing for the foreseeable future, it would be nice to have additional ushers who are able to rotate out with those who are currently assisting at Mass. If you are willing to help with any of the three weekend Masses, please contact Jenny at the parish office at 740-774-1407.
Eucharistic Adoration is held on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the church. Can you commit an hour to spend with our Lord? Some of our adorers are returning to school, so
there is a need for additional adorers. We pray for the day we can once again adore in the adoration chapel!
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam
throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH SEPTEMBER 6, 2020CHILLICOTHE, OHIO TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
NOTES FROM THE DIOCESE OF COLUMBUS CONCERNING COVID-19 PROTOCOLS
We should be in the mindset that the first phase of the return is now over, and we are prudently moving toward normalcy while maintaining precautions for the health of those in church or any gathering of people based on the best healthcare knowledge available.
MASKS: Face coverings should be worn inside churches and in other parish facilities. This is in keeping with the best knowledge available for the slowing down of the spread of the virus, and with the executive order of the governor. Personal safety by keeping a safe social distance is still the best approach to reducing the spread.
DISPENSATION: The dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation has been extended indefinitely. This is in keeping with the rest of the Ohio Catholic Conference of Catholic Bishops. Those who are feeling well and who are not in the high-risk categories should be encouraged to come to Mass. Those who are in the high-risk categories, or who are not feeling well are encouraged to remain home.
This encouragement is meant to help people who are unsure or uncertain about coming to Mass during this time. While we encourage parishioners to come to Mass during the time of dispensation, we should continue to implement the normal healthcare guidelines such as maintaining social distancing by marking off pews, wearing facemasks, sanitizing pews, and making hand sanitizer available. During this dispensation, parishioners may choose to assist at a Mass during the week, if they are able. Doing so would free up space in church on the weekend for those who desire to come to Mass but are unable to during the week. Additionally, assisting at a weekend Mass could simply be occasional by the healthy individual during the dispensation.
See Bishop Brennan’s message on the Diocesan website at: https://columbuscatholic.org/local-news-urgent-2.

St. Mary Church in ChillicotheWe continue to work with the fact that bats and bees have found their way into the church. Roofers are working to patch holes and to deal with the remnants of the hive that worked into the church roof above us. We have a situation in which our church itself reminds us that God’s gift to us flows with honey….
St. Peter Church in ChillicotheSome have asked about Adoration. Unfortunately, we are not yet at a time when the adoration chapel can reopen as it was. However, we are looking into the possibility of adding some days and hours in the church. We’ll let you know. We are happy to welcome Andrea McLean to the staff of St. Peter, Chillicothe, and St. Mary Queen of the Missions, Waverly. She will be taking up the responsibilities of P.S.R. and Sacramental Preparation along with outreach for Evangelization. We thank Tess Hatmacher, who has been guiding P.S.R. for many years and Judy Harness, who has been working in various capacities for Family Life, for all they have done through the years. They will continue to be involved so we do not lose “community wisdom” as we move forward. Chris Hiles will be working with R.C.I.A., along with Deacon Reed Hauser. We will be taking steps with the members of the R.C.I.A. class of this past year in the weeks ahead.
St. Mary, Queen of the Missions, in WaverlyA few items are being added to assist with our sanitizing efforts, thanks to a grant from the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Columbus. We are grateful to you all for your help in making sure that we keep social distance and protect one another by wearing the facial covering. These are small ways to address a big challenge. All of us working together can accomplish great things. We are also reviewing the membership records. If you have not received a mailing from the church, please let the office know.

“Living the Joy of the Gospel,” the theme of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, inspires us, as people of faith, to share joyfully the Good News of Christ to those who most need to feel His love.
During this unique time in our nation and church history, we don’t always feel like living with joy. Remember, all donations are helpful no matter how small. Just like the woman’s flour jar, it will be replenished by our Lord if we give in faith. Please prayerfully consider a donation to the appeal if you have not already given.
