BAPTISMS Dates and times are announced at the baptismal class. Parents of children to be baptized must attend two classes of prepara-tion. Godparents need only attend the first class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received Confirmation. The classes take place on the 3rd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm in English in the Old Church. If you do not live in this parish, you must obtain a letter of permission from your own parish to baptize your child at St. Peter Chanel. Feast of the Presentation - February 2nd

This Thursday the Church celebrates the feast of the Presentation - the day on which the child Jesus was presented in the temple by Mary and Joseph. We recall this event every time we pray the fourth joyful mystery of the rosary. A holy, old man by the name of Simeon, who was in the temple at the time, proclaimed the child to be “a light for all nations.” Christ is the true light that has come into the world. All of those who have been baptized have received the light of Christ. One of the ceremonies performed during the rite of baptism is the lighting of the baptismal candle. This takes place after the person has been baptized. The baptismal candle is lit from the large paschal candle - a symbol of Christ. The lighted candle reminds the newly baptized that the light of Christ now burns in his soul. Parents and godparents of newly baptized infants are reminded that they are to help keep the flame of faith burning brightly in the hearts of their children. The best way to accomplish this all important task is by making sure that the light of Christ remains burning brightly in one’s own heart - kept alive by frequent prayer and reception of the sacraments. If we follow the light that is Christ we will safely reach heaven, and help others to do the same.

St. Blase Day - February 3rd

The day after the feast of the Presentation, St. Blase is honored. St. Blase was a bishop and fourth century martyr. It is customary to have our throats blessed on that day. It’s related that St. Blase once saved a child who was choking on a bone by simply

blessing him. St. Blase is, therefore, invoked most especially to protect us from every illness and disease of the throat. Throats will be blessed at every Mass on this day. Why not make an extra effort to come to Mass on these two days?

YOUNG ADULT GROUP

WHAT DOES I.H.S. MEAN? Many of is have seen the inscription IHS in altars, tabernacles, monstrances and we wonder what it means. There have been many interpretations of the I.H.S., including: -The Latin In Hoc Signo (Vinces) which means "In this sign (you will conquer),” from the vision that Constantine received before his victory at the Mulvian Bridge in 312 (some say 313). Con-stantine received a vision of a cross and heard the phrase and had it emblazoned on the shields of his soldiers. -The Greek Iesus Hemeteros Soter which means "Jesus our Sav-ior" which was a popular Christian inscription in the early church -The Latin Iesus Hominum Salvator which means "Jesus Savior of Humankind," made popular by St. Bernadine, and perhaps the most widespread meaning of the inscription IHS. When you see the inscription, it is a reminder of God's loving power and enduring mercy for us. It is more than God's "title", it is a reminder of God's active presence with us, among us and before us.

BURIAL OR CREMATION? For the first Christians, the resurrection after death was a strong reality. They did everything they could to be able to bury the bodies of their dead. When we visit the catacombs in Rome, we are struck by the care and the faith with which the dead were buried. They are laid out as if they were sleeping. «We look for the Resurrection of the dead and life everlast-ing» (The Creed) Such is the faith of Christians who believe that, just as Christ rose from the tomb with his body, so too we will rise with our body by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is why cremation had been rejected for a long time since it was seen as a refusal to believe in the Resurrection. Today the Church no longer forbids a funeral ceremony if a person choos-es cremation for a GOOD REASON, and there is no danger in compromising the belief in the resurrection of the dead. In cer-tain countries, it is sometimes a necessity, and also under cer-tain circumstances. The same respect ought to be given to the ashes as is given to the body of the deceased. They should be deposited in an established and respectable place in a cemetery but NEVER IN ONE’s HOME. Nevertheless, the relationship between faith and practice leads us to PREFER burying the body whenever possible. This signifies more clearly the respect of the body of each person who has become a temple of the Holy Spirit through baptism and who is called to the resurrec-tion on the last day. Nourished by the Eucharist - the Body of Christ - our mortal bodies are given the promise of immortali-ty. Burying the dead, as the first Christians did, signifies the expectation of the Resurrection. Even in those situations where cremation seems the only possible alternative, the Church always desires that the Funeral Mass be celebrated with the body present, and then the cremation can take place afterwards.

Fiesta de la Presentación - 2 de Febrero

El Jueves, la Iglesia celebra la fiesta de la Presentación -el día en que el Niño Jesús fue presentado en el templo por María y José. Recordamos este evento cada ves que rezamos el cuarto misterio gozoso del rosario. Un viejo hombre santo de nombre de Simeón, que estaba en el templo a esa hora, proclamó que este niño iba a ser “una luz para todas las naciones.” Cristo es la luz verdadera que ha venido a este mundo. Todos aquellos que han sido bautizados, han recibido la luz de Cristo. Una de las ceremonias que se hacen durante el rito del Bautismo, es encender la vela bautismal. Esto se hace después que la persona halla sido bautizada. La vela bautismal se enciende con la llama de la vela pascual grande -que es un símbolo de Cristo. La vela encendida, recuerda a los nuevos bautizados, que la luz de Cristo arde ahora en su alma. A los Padres y los Padrinos de los nuevos infantes bautizados se les recuerda que tienen qué ayudar a conservar la llama de la fe ardiendo brillantemente en los corazones de sus niños. La mejor manera de cumplir esta tarea tan importante, es asegurándose de que la luz de Cristo continúa ardiendo con toda su brillantez en nuestro propio corazón -se mantiene vivo con frecuentes oraciones y recepción de los sacramentos. Si seguimos la luz que es Cristo, seguramente alcanzaremos el cielo y ayudaremos a otros a hacer lo mismo.

San Blas -3 de Febrero El día después de la fiesta de la Presentación, se rinde honor a San Blas. San Blas fue un Obispo y mártir en el siglo cuarto. Es una costumbre hacer bendecir nuestras gargantas este

día. Se dice que San Blas una ves salvó la vida a un niño que se estaba atragantando con un hueso, con solo darle la bendición. San Blas es por consiguiente, invocado más especialmente, para protégenos contra toda enfermedad de la garganta. Se dará la bendición de las gargantas después de cada Misa.

¿Porqué no hacer un esfuerzo especial para venir a Misa en estos días?

Concerns and Answers Regarding Confession Can't I talk to God directly, not a priest, to get forgiveness? Not according to the Bible. Read John 20:21-23; 2 Corinthians 2:10; and 2 Corinthians 5:18. If God knows everything we do, then how come we have to go to confession? You may know your younger brother broke your CD player, but wouldn't it be aggravating if he knew you knew, but still didn't say "I'm sorry?" Doesn't God forgive no matter what? If we think of sin as merely breaking rules, it is hard to understand why God can't just "look the other way." But sin is real; it hurts us and makes us distant from him-and unable to enter heaven. We can only be restored if we confess. Confession just gives people the idea that it's all right to sin as long as you're sorry later. If a man is confessing drunken-ness while he has plans with his buddies to go barhopping and get drunk again the coming weekend, he can't be forgiven. He has to have decided to stop. Confession stops sins; it doesn't start them.

Como subordinado: ¿has obedecido y respetado a tus superiores? (Profesores, jefes, abuelos, etc.). ¿Has trabajado todo lo que debías? ¿Has sido cómplice o encubridor de pecados de los superiores? ¿Eres fiel a ellos o has descubierto sus secretos y has contado chismes? PADRES ¿Procuras educar cristianamente a tus hijos: enseñándoles la doctrina cristiana, dándole ejemplo de buenas costumbres, corrigiéndolos y castigándolos cuando lo merecen (que leen, que hacen, que espectáculos y diversiones frecuentan) Vigilando para saber: adonde van, con quienes se juntan, preocupándote de que frecuenten los Sacramentos, lleven vida de piedad, se preparen un porvenir? ¿Te opones a la elección de estado de tus hijos? (Negándoles el permiso para entrar en religión o para casarse). ¿Los mimas demasiado y les concedes excesiva libertad e independencia? Respecto de tus hijas: ¿dejas que vistan mal? ¿Les permites ir solas con otros? (Coches, viajes...) ¿Les dejas tomar parte en diversiones malas? (Bailes, cines...) ¿Sabes los peligros que corren? (Al ir a trabajar a otra ciudad, durante el noviazgo, en la vida de universidad...) Como superior: ¿vigilas por el cumplimiento de las leyes? (Salario justo, leyes sociales, obligaciones religiosas...) ¿Tratas a tus subordinados con soberbia? ¿Los tratas con injusticia? (En el repartir favores y cargas, atención a recomendaciones, postergando los negocios de los pobres, mandando cosas injustas...) ¿Has cumplido todas tus obligaciones con exactitud? (Como gobernador, alcalde, secretario, gerente, consejero, tutor, administrador...) ¿Evitas con entereza escándalos, robos, sobornos, venganzas, abusos, descuidos? ¿O los toleras con debilidad? ¿Te preocupas, con caridad cristiana, del bien de tus subordinados? (Evitar su perversión moral, procurar que cumplan sus deberes religiosos, Misa, confesión, etc.). ESPOSOS ¿Has maltratado a tu consorte de palabra o de obra? ¿Le has guardado la fidelidad que prometiste ante el altar? ¿Has conservado la paz y buena armonía, aun cediendo de tu derecho? ¿Le has dado algún disgusto grave? ¿Le has desautorizado delante de los hijos? ¿Le has desobedecido en cosa grave? ¿Has pasado varios días sin hablarle, disgustado? ¿Le entregas el dinero necesario para el pago de la casa? ¿O malgastas en vicios y vanidades? ¿Has impedido la obre de Dios en el matrimonio? ¿Te has ausentado mucho tiempo sin su consentimiento? HERMANOS ¿Tienes odio o aversión a tus hermanos? (Envidia...) ¿Has reñido con ellos seriamente? ¿Has estado varios días sin hablarles? ¿Has encubierto sus faltas a tus padres?

How (and why) to return to Confession

Reason 2: You shower to show respect for those around you. Cleansing your soul makes you better to be around, too!

Reason 1: The presence of sin can easily lead to depression and anxiety.

Step 1 Examine your conscience using the Ten Commandments or an available guide.

Reason 3: Mortal sin, unconfessed, "causes exclusion from Christ's Kingdom and the eternal death of hell, for our free-dom has the power to make choices forever, with no turning back" (Catechism, No. 1861). Reason 4: As they leave the confessional, people smile a smile of freedom.

Step 3 There are no special words you need to say. Greet the priest, and tell him how long it has been since your last confession. If it's been a while, he'll help you.

Reason 5: Because love means having to say you are sorry to the one you love.

Reason 6: You will grow in sincerity, humility and self-knowledge. Reason 7: Mother Teresa thought she had to go. Frequently. Reason 8: Hoping to convert on your deathbed? That's not very likely. Most likely, you will die as you lived.

Step 2 You have the choice of facing the priest (if he offers the op-tion) or speaking through a screen.

Reason 10: Don't be scared to death of confession. Be scared of death without confession.

Reason 9: It is itself a serious sin to go to Communion if you have serious sin on your soul and have not asked for for-giveness in confession.

Step 4: Be concise, clear, complete and contrite. You have to confess mortal sins and give a sense of how often. Don't be embarrassed. You're not going to tell the priest anything he hasn't already heard.

Step 5: The priest won't scold you. In fact, if you've had a tough confession, he'll show you extra care. Your penance won't be harsh.

Step 6: Then you'll make an act of contrition. Look in a pray-er book for a longer one, or simply say: "Jesus, I am truly sor-ry for my sins and, with your grace, I will try to sin no more."

Step 7: Do your penance right away, before leaving the church if possible.

Reason 11: Be strong. Face your sins, deal with them and move on.

Reason 12: Make sure there are no unpleasant surprises at your particular judgment or at the Final Judgment.

Step 8: Christ has forgiven and forgotten your sins and the angels are having a party to celebrate.

Reason 13: The priest will listen to your sins and will never tell a soul on pain of losing his soul. Priests even learn to for-get what they hear.

Confession Definition: "For a sin to be mortal, three condi-tions must together be met: 'Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent'". (C. C. C., No. 1857). Grave Matter What constitutes "grave matter"? Some common sins: Missing Sunday Mass, any sex outside mar-riage (including pornography and masturbation), serious theft, abortion and contraception, defamation of character, purposely getting drunk.
