The Shock Course is designed specifically for physicians who work in rural settings. Its mandate is to equip you with the skills necessary to diagnose and treat the hemodynamicallly unstable patient, using only the tools available in the rural ER. The course emphasizes the latest, evidence based standards of care for shock, most of which can be applied in the rural setting. As well as theoretical knowledge about the work up of shock, use of vasopressors, and early goal directed therapy for sepsis, there is also ample opportunity for hands on practice of central line insertion (volunteering not required!) and the use of bedside ultrasound in the diagnosis and management of shock. There are also several real life case discussions involving complex management issues. This course is suited for both the experienced and the emerging rural doctor. Beginning in 2001, the EDE - ED Echo course has been taught over 600 times to over 7000 Canadian physicians. Its use has become the standard of care in large trauma centers, remote settings and in combat units in Afghanistan. The course is unique in that it has continually evolved as the instructor team gained insight into the way beginners learn this skill. Numerous techniques were developed to help the learner acquire a basic understanding of ultrasound image generation and interpretation, making the EDE Course the most effective teaching vehicle for this modality. You may register for either one of these course days on the registration form. At the end of a single day, participants will be able to detect: Pericardial ef fus ions ; AAA 's ; In tra-abdominal hemorrhage; Intra-uterine pregnancies.

CASTED: Emergency—The 'Hands-On' ED Orthopedics Course (Offered Twice): Wednesday, September 26 OR Thursday, September 27, 2012 Whistler Conference Centre 0800—1800 MAXIMUM: 32

CASTED: Emergency is the “hands-on” ED orthopedics course designed specifically for emergency department physicians and staff. Combining case presentations with over 4 hours of “hands-on” casting and splinting, CASTED reviews ED orthopedic principles, ED management of over 80 specific diagnoses, and numerous ED casting, splinting and reduction techniques. CASTED offers numerous clinical pearls on: history, physical and investigations; making more accurate diagnoses; recognizing the “red flag” patients; knowing who needs a reduction; fracture and dislocation reduction and molding techniques; understanding who needs to see ortho and when. You may register for either one of these course days on the registration form.

AHLS: Simulation-Assisted Emergency Medicine Proce-dures Course

Thursday, September 29 0800—1700 MAXIMUM: 24

This course was designed to allow physicians to acquire and review their skills in essential life-saving emergency procedures including: 1. Needle Cricothyrotomy and transtracheal jet ventilation; 2. Open Cricothyrotomy ; 3. Needle Thoracostomy; 4. Chest Tube insertion; 5. Intraosseous Vascular access in Adults; 6. In-traosseous Vascular access in Children; 7. Peri-cardiocentesis; 8. Central line vascular access, landmark technique; 9.Ultrasound-guided Central line vascular access; 10. Princi-ples of effective emergency resuscitation.

Before the course, the participants will have access to web-based learning modules. These online modules will include videos, anima-tions, powerpoint lectures, and select articles from the literature that demonstrate the cognitive aspects of performing the proce-dure. Participants will complete this self-directed learning at their convenience, be-fore arriving for the one-day hands-on proce-dure lab and human patient simulator ses-sions. Finally, the participants will have the opportunity to integrate performance of these procedures into the real-time resuscitation of a critically ill patient using the latest Human Patient Simulator technology to create realistic scenarios. ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Update

The ACLS Provider Course provides the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest. Providers are expected to learn to manage 10 core A C L S c a s e s : a r e s p i r a t o r y emergency; four types of cardiac arrest (simple VF/VT, complex VF/VT, PEA and asystole); four types of prearrest emergencies (bradychardia, stable tachycardia, unstable tachycardia and acute coronary syndromes); and stroke. The one-day update course is intended for experienced clinicians who have previously completed at least one ACLS course successfully. As much as possible, resuscitation simulations, which are relevant and realistic for the learner's background and current work environment, are used. Textbooks are NOT included with the registration fees, but can be ordered directly from www.laerdal.ca.

AIME for Nurses: Collaborative Advanced Management of Airway for Nurses

Thursday, September 27, 2012 Whistler Health Centre 0800 - 1730 hrs MAXIMUM: 18 (breakfast at 0730; course starts at 0800)

This course is a combination of lectures and hands on skill stations. Students work together to use a staged approach to oxygen delivery, ventilation techniques, including management of the difficult to ventilate patient. Good BVM technique is heavily emphasized. Students will learn about airway assessment, RSI, awake intubations, surgical airways and when each are recommended, as well as options for your team when facing a difficult or failed intubation. Students are expected to understand the appropriate drugs, dosages & delivery used in RSI, and to incorporate those pharmacology decisions into the airway management decision tree. Attendance at the course does not certify the Registered Nurse to perform the skills in their workplace. Skills learned in this course fit into Sections 6 and 7 of the Scope of Practice for a Registered Nurse in The College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia’s Scope of Practice document.
