Sunday Reflection By Dn. Raymond Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time B - Love conquers Death July 1, 2018

God does not plan our death or suffering; since the fall, we must face suffering and death with faith that love conquers all. The first reading of this Sunday from Wisdom is (Wisdom 1:13, 2:24) abundantly clear: “God did not make death, and He does not delight in the death of the living.” Cancer, miscarriage and all kinds of tragedy are not God’s plan. He grieves with us in our losses and sufferings of every kind. It is “the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who belong to his company experience it.”

Angels were created before humans. They were given free will. They could choose God or reject Him. Some angels in their pride attempted to make themselves equal to God. St Michael the Archangel, whose name means "Who is equal to God?" defeated them, and banned Satan from any contact with the Lord of Life. Satan went from being Lucifer, the name that means God's light bearer, to the Prince of Darkness. Satan could not defeat God's angels, but he could make war on God’s most beautiful creation, man. He tried to destroy mankind with the same sin that he com-mitted: the sin of envy and pride.

We just finished watching a Singapore Chinese drama on cookery “Served H.O.T.” (燒賣). The story is about

three young men who promised the owner of a small eatery before she died to continue running it. With the help of a young lady and the coaching of her dad, a once famous chef, they team up together and become good chefs. Their mission is to serve customers with good foods giving them joy. They not just put tastes into their cooking but their feel-ing and hearts as well. One of the young men actually comes from a restaurant enterprise family. His older brother envies him for his talents and bullies him because he is afraid of losing the inheritance of the family business. The great success of the small eatery deepens the envy. He tries hard to wound the team by hiring bullies to beat up one

of the young men (who makes yummy cha siu 叉燒 Chinese style BBQ pork) into coma, poisons his younger brother to

lose his taste buds, prevents the eatery from placing ads, exerts pressure on gourmet journalists on good honest re-ports and forces some reporters to resign. He even tries to bribe the third young men forcing the restaurant into bank-ruptcy. Finally, he convinces the daughter of the previous owner to sell the restaurant to him. He claims to be a superi-or, perfect, flawless cook. In reality, he is impervious to criticism and ignores cooking ethics. At the end, his dad finds out his deeds and scolds him for serving the customers with second class foods in order to make money. He is full of anger and challenges his younger brother to a cooking competition but lost. Even with all these, his younger brother still loves him and forgives everything he had done. For he understood his bigger brother is suffering too: loneliness with no friends, senior chefs despise him, young chefs don’t like to work with him, his wife controls everything. Envy, fear, material goods become the devil, the poisonous snake almost destroy the brotherhood relationship. This drama is not a religious story. God is never mentioned but it reflects Love and Forgiveness. Our abundance or want in life are not measured by our prestige, wealth or material goods but by our nearness to God. In the Gospel reading (Mark 5:21-43), God reveals himself as the giver of all that is good and the one who sustains our lives with His love. He heals our wounds, as Jesus did with those he encountered on "the other side" of the lake. Today's liturgy invites us to be grateful and share our gratitude with all especially the poor among us. As Fr. Jhack said in one of his homilies: “Gratitude is the best attitude.”

God is radically committed to our freedom but also to the gift of creating life. In spite of Satan continually creat-ing sins, suffering and death, God continues to love His creation and human beings are a part of it. For reasons we will not know on this side of heaven, God still believes life is worth giving to us as a gift. He sent His Son to live

through it with us, and to have victory over death in the Resurrection. Whatever suffering we are walking through, God does not delight in it, and He did not plan it. But He will walk through it with us and work Resurrection out of it. That is the promise of abundant, eternal life.

Bishop Paul of our Diocese just ordained four new Permanent Deacon on Friday, Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul. Thanks for the blessings and friends’ support. my wife and I were able to travel to St. Paul to attend and stayed overnight in a nice hotel, the first time since the stroke. With the first group of 8 ordained 11years ago starting to phase out due to health or age, we will have new blood called to embody the image of Christ the servant. They represent the church in the community, and at Sunday Mass. Like St. John the Baptist, the Nativity we celebrated last Sunday, they herald the coming of Jesus, the way, the truth and the life to all the people of the world. Like Jesus, they will serve others by washing their feet and proclaiming the good news by preaching. They bring the needs of the community to the attention of the church. The dual role in parish and community makes deacons ideal for “connecting the dots.” Deacons Believe what they read, preach what they believe, and practise what they preach.
