Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time JUNE 21, 2020
DO NOT BE AFRAID R . I S , P V
My grandmother told me the story of a wild hyena that crept into our community in the quiet hours of the night, to scavenge for food. The only dog in the house was in one corner sleeping, but upon the arri-val of the unexpected stranger he woke up— and struck by fear, the dog died! He was not able to sur-vive his own horror at being eaten by that hyena. The hyena did not harm anybody in and of itself; the dog was a vic m of fear which led to his death. The fear of contrac ng coronavirus forced govern-ments, businesses, schools, and worship centers to close down or reduce their nor-mal opera ons. It has impacted human exist-ence in devasta ng ways as people are naturally ac ve, outgoing, crea ve and produc ve. One does not need a sur-vey to ascertain the number of people dying for various reasons before the pandemic, or to look at the media sta s cs of those dead as a result of the pan-demic, and of those trea ng the infec on. However, regardless of the coronavirus, many other things are posing threats to human life: cancer, drug addic on, abor ons, accidents, alcoholism, deaths at child birth, malaria, typhoid, HIV, hunger, and conflicts. The figures that may accumulate as a result of those challenges to humanity can be alarming, but, be-cause humanity has come to terms with their men-ace across the globe; the coronavirus pandemic re-mains an unwelcome, oppressive, global topic while other life-threatening challenges merit li le or no media or government a en on.
Jesus Christ calms us; He encourages us not to get into a state of despair, confusion, depression, anxie-ty or loneliness. Jesus comes in when we need help the most, as a friend, confidant, companion and as our savior. In the Old Testament, Samson fought so many ba les on behalf of his people; so also King David, led the Israelites into many victorious ba les. They were appreciated and celebrated for their re-markable contribu on in libera ng their people from the clutches of their captors. Similarly, Jesus Christ, our spiritual hero, is able to fight our physical and
spiritual ba les; therefore, we need to trust him from one
genera on to another. The disciples of Jesus were
terrified by the currents of the sea, un l Jesus
woke up to rebuke the wind and
their fear. It is hu-manly challenging to
prac ce faith instead of fear, however, if we
con nue to grow the habit of trus ng in God, faith will
become part of us. Jesus Christ wants us to acknowledge him by receiv-ing the sacraments that will empower us to prac ce virtue thereby deepening our rela onships with fel-low humans and God, our Creator. Merely professing faith in Jesus Christ will not be enough; we as disci-ples should willingly go into bearing witness accord-ing to the Biblical injunc on: giving hope to those feeling hopeless, bringing light to those in darkness, healing the sick, raising the dead, feeding the hun-gry, and clothing the naked. It is an assurance that our God is caring, protec ve, and a provider to His people.

Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist (EMs) & Ushers & Adult Altar Servers & Sacristans: As you discern your readiness to return for volunteering for Mass, please keep in mind that the Bishop’s Dispensation for attending Holy Mass on Sunday is still in effect, so keep your health and safety at the fore-front. If/when you are ready to serve or would like to discuss returning or have questions about Phase I reopening to public Mass, please see Sue and/or David after any Mass these next few weeks. We will be able to spend time reviewing and train on the changes made for liturgical services We will not be having formal classroom or meeting for re-training due to COVID restrictions. This will allow small number training over the next few weeks, as we begin to build our ministry volunteers up. If you have never served, but would like to, we will be available to discuss at that time. Thank you all very much for serving our Lord in this most inti-mate and pious way.
Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is con-cealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the house-tops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two spar-rows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you
are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

Hope Remains: A Journey to Africa By Dr. Sue Moravec
Hey…. St. Paul’s …. recognize anyone in this picture? A rare picture indeed, but that would be young Victor Yakubu at the end, his village friend Julius next to him. His father is the tall man and the occasion is the final vows of the nun on left, his aunt Sister Beatrice. This probably about the time he realized that his mom may have exaggerated about him being the most handsome boy in the village. For those of you that know that hom-ily. Smile. In September 2018, Bishop George Dodo from the Dio-cese of Zaria (Fr. Victor, Fr. Bitrus & Fr. Ishaya’s Bish-op) sent Fr. Julius Kundi to our Diocese to serve at Lake Havasu Catholic Parish. I was fortunate to utilize my “African priest shuttle” to pick him up at the airport.
Immediately I could sense that Fr. Victor & Fr. Julius were more than fellow priests. Growing up together they had incredible bond, one that they would share with me as their “sister”. The follow April, I invited Fr. Victor to join me on vacation cruise. I told him he could take another priest since cost the same. He immedi-ately said Fr. Julius. So, the 3 of us took a fabulous 4-day cruise. It was the first time either had seen ocean, first time they have stayed in high rise hotel, first time they had seen …… hundreds of stories. Of course, when you travel with someone you become close and Fr. Julius and I to talked and share our lives. Special time for all of us. In December of last year, Fr. Julius learned that his two-year assignment in Havasu was going to be ex-tended. On December 10th, I was in Kingman to give Fr. Victor’s parish their Advent mission lec-ture. I was to return December 11th, but God had other plans. I received a call from Fr. Julius, who very passionately asked me a big favor. The favor was to stay another night in Kingman because he needed to talk with me. Weird request but sure, I said. Later that afternoon, Fr. Julius came to meet with me at Fr. Victor’s house. There we had a very dis-tressing conversation. Fr. Julius needed a good friend to talk to, yet I could not get from him exactly why he was distressed. He only promised that I would understand later. That of course made me more concerned. Fr. Julius left, and Fr. Victor came home, and I told him what happened. We both were concerned and drove to Havasu to discuss more, however, the school was having Our Lady of Guadalupe event and Fr. Julius was not able to talk. The next day, on December 12th, Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe at 4:30am – my phone first buzzed. A mes-sage from Fr. Henry. Another priest Vicar in Diocese of Zaria, from same village who I had met and took to Grand Canyon in November last year. The message was a copy / past news from the Vatican that Fr. Julius Kundi would be the next Bishop of Kafanchan Diocese in Nigeria. Immediately Fr. Victor received the same message and together we called Fr. Julius, now Monsignor Dr. Julius Kundi. Our friend was now a Bishop-Elect and the Diocese was near the village they grew up! Calls from around our Diocese and all of Africa came flying in. Father Victor was shouting, jumping, dancing in uncontrolled joy! The new Bishop Elect im-mediately apologized that he could not tell us anything until it was announced. Apology accepted; our brother is a Bishop (Part two – next week)
