ST. PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH

In the Diocese of Toledo, July 1 is the beginningof a new fiscal year. While the middle of a muggysummer seems like a strange time to be talkingnew years, like all fresh beginnings it marks atransition between what has been and what willbe.

To speak then first fiscally, thanks to your greatgenerosity the financial tight spot we were in lastyear is now largely just a bad memory. If you’vebeen watching that thermometer in the bulletineach week, you know that now we have beenmeeting our goal and so are able to end the yearjust ending slightly in the black. I am greatlyappreciative of all those who have increasedtheir weekly offering to make this possible.Furthermore, we have just been audited by thediocese, and while the auditors had a lot of best-practices suggestions to make in the details, which we will of course implement, these willsimply make a good operation better. So fiscally, the new year begins with bright hope.

That means that it’s the other changes the newyear brings that we are most conscious of now.So soon after the departure of our seminarianintern, deacon David Kidd, we were surprised tolearn that our associate pastor these past twoyears, Fr. Nathan Bockrath, was being transferred

to Fremont to serve the parishes of St. Joseph andSt. Ann, be the chaplain to Bishop Hoffman school, and the parish chaplain to the Island parishes ofPut-in-Bay Mother of Sorrows and Kelleys IslandSt. Michael. We will miss him but we wish him thevery best in his new apostolate.

And now July 1 marks the date on which wewelcome our newest associate, just ordained amonth ago, Fr. Paul Schreiner. Fr. Paul, from Tiffin,Ohio, was a seminarian at Mount St. Mary’sSeminary in Cincinnati where Fr. Nathan and Fr.Tony Recker (and Frs. Mike Roemmele and MattFrisbee in Sandusky) also were educated (andwhere I taught) these past few years so it’s almostlike a reunion in these here parts. We extend toFr. Paul our warmest welcome as he begins hispriestly ministry among us. He will hit the groundrunning – his very first day is our day of majorplanning for the programs for the new year; we’regoing to welcome him with a ton of work!

Finally we begin this new year also with a newparish mission for us all – we have re-committedourselves to celebrate our faith, share the goodnews, and serve the needs of others in the nameof Christ with increased resolve. We may notbreak out the party hats and noisemakers, but welook forward to the new year with great hopeand expectation – it’s a gift from the Lord!

Fr. Paul’s journey to priesthood began in his hometown of Tiffin,Ohio. His parents, Steve and Dena, were always supportive of hisdesire to be a priest. Paul and his three sisters, Marie, Renee andMary, were homeschooled from kindergarten through 12th gradeand attended daily Mass frequently. Paul served at Mass regularlyfrom the young age of eight years old. Like a typical youth, he hada paper route. He was also a junior lifeguard and a page at thelocal library. After high school graduation, his journey took him toAve Maria University in Naples, Florida. While attending college,he planned to go to the seminary but upon college graduation hedecided to take some time off and he returned to Tiffin where heworked at Taiho, an automotive supplier. During those two yearsat the factory, his desire to “take care of souls” was confirmedand he applied to the Diocese of Toledo to be a seminarian.

In 2009 Paul was accepted by the Diocese of Toledo as aseminarian. He attended Saint Mary’s Seminary in Cincinnati. Hisseminarian internship then took him back to northern Ohio, to MostBlessed Sacrament in Toledo. Paul described his internship as verypositive and confirming of his vocation. He described his ordinationto the priesthood on May 30th as joy-filled and surreal. Just recently,Fr. Paul enjoyed some vacation time in Traverse City, Michigan. And now his journey has brought him to Norwalk, Ohio.

In June, more than 80 children from St. Paul and St. Mary parishes joined together to embark on an icyexpedition where children were taught how to overcome obstacles with God’s almighty power. Theawesome team crew leaders and youth volunteers facilitated children in rock-solid Bible truths thatwill help to guide them through life’s challenges – large and small.

At Everest Vacation Bible School the children experienced God’s Word in surprising and unforgettableways! Each day, leaders reinforced one simple Bible truth—which will make it easier for them toremember and apply to real life situations!

Hello Parents,

We had a faith-filled week at PSR Discovery camp.Eighty-plus students enjoyed a week with theSaints, Mary (rosary making), celebrations of thechurch, prayer and contemplation, thegeography of the Holy Land and travel of theapostles; as well as dramatic play in acting outthe parables. Our K- 3 students were introducedto the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd’s purposeis to assist the involvement of children and adultsin a common religious experience in which thereligious values of childhood, primarily thosevalues of contemplation and enjoyment of God,are predominant.

We look forward to seeing all of our campers onWednesday nights during the school year.

If you have not signed your child up for PSRyou still have time. Classes will be held onWednesday nights from 6:15 pm until 7:30 pmfor students in grades K-6. Students entering 7th

and 8th grades will meet on Sunday afternoonsbefore the 5:00 Mass.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP)Norwalk St. Paul Conference

Semi-Annual fiscal report Oct 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015 (6 months)

Adults assisted 534Children assisted 470Total Applications 340

Rent $34,635.00Electric $ 6,821.00Gas $ 1,568.00Propane $ 339.00Water $ 3,432.00Food (1) $ 4,900.00Lodging $ 641.00Gasoline $ 338.00Office Expenses $ 473.00Community/SVDP (2) $12,000.00Misc Needs $ 2,381.00Total (3) $67,528.00

(1)Large portions of this line item are regularand seasonal donations to the Norwalk AreaFood Bank (NAFB). While we do some directaid in the form of food vouchers, most foodneeds are referred to NAFD.

(2)This line item is comprised of donations toSVDP International Disaster Fund, SeniorCitizens programs, Salvation Army and othercommunity donations. We feel theseprograms address community and nationalSVDP type needs that we do not, which arevery worthwhile.

It should be noted that over 99% of yourdonations go directly to people in need.

(3) Includes a large expenditure to oneindividual (spread over all expensecategories) covered by a substantialdesignated donation, which is not part ofour normal funding guidelines or fundingsources. This funds a true need. Whenoperationally possible, Saint Vincent de PaulInternational directs local conferences tohandle a true need, which is outside of ournormal guidelines, if there is a willing donor.Situations like this are very limited for us,because our conference does not have thestaff, procedures or the more sophisticatedrecord-keeping system to handle it, excepton an occasional basis.

Vincentians can provide immediate help with food, rent, the threatof a utility disconnection and other related needs. We offer hopeto individuals giving them a chance to recover from their financialproblems. In addition, we refer them to other agencies foradditional temporary and longer term assistance, which is also avery important part of our mission.

We call ourselves Vincentians in tribute to St. Vincent de Paul. WhatVincentians have in common is a desire to serve those who arepoor and suffering. In other words, Vincentians embrace the lonely, forgotten and alienated by providing services to anyone in need. Our motto is: “There is no work of charity that is foreign to thesociety”.To respect the wishes of those who donate to us and support ourwork, we do our best to verify the legitimacy of our clients’ claimsof need before providing any assistance. We also have to keep inmind the spirit of Christ, who leads our ministry, which means wehelp our neighbors based on need without judging them. St. Vincentde Paul committee would like to thank our generous Parishionersfor the financial support you have given us.

The Norwalk St Paul conference is in need of volunteers to help inour mission. If you are interested in this worthwhile ministry, pleasecall the St. Paul parish office at 419-668-6044.

Many blessings to you,Vincentian MembersSociety of St. Vincent de Paul – Norwalk St. Paul Conference

Catechism Notes: Day 152 - What is the right way to honor theLord present in the bread and wine?

Because God is truly present in the consecrated species of breadand wine, we must preserve the sacred gifts with the greatestreverence and worship our Lord and Redeemer in the MostBlessed Sacrament. If there are consecrated hosts left over afterthe celebration of Holy Eucharist, they are kept in sacred vesselsin the tabernacle. Since the Most Blessed Sacrament is present inthem, the tabernacle is one of the most venerable places in everychurch. We genuflect before any tabernacle. Certainly, anyonewho is really following Christ will recognize Him in the poorest ofthe poor and serve Him in them. But he will also find time to spendin adoration before the tabernacle and offer his love to ourEucharistic Lord. (YOUCAT question 218)
