St. Patrick’s is uniquely a sign of God’s loving presence. It was here when the miners left for the gold country, it served the Irish immigrants, withstood the great fire and earthquake of 1906, continued to serve the Irish, then the Spanish-speaking, now the Filipino community, the numerous tourists and conventioneers and always the business world by which it is surrounded. Please Pray for our Holy Father’s Intentions for May Universal: That the media may be instruments in the service of truth and peace. For Evangelzation: That Mary, Star of Evangelization, may guide the Church in proclaiming Christ to all nations.

May 25, 2014 Sixth Sunday of Easter ~ Year A

Acts 8:5-8,14-17; Ps 66:1-7,16,20; 1 Pt 3:15-18; Jn 14:15-21 The people of Samaria come to worship the Lord (Ps) and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (1). It is this same Spirit that leads us into the truth (3). In the body, Jesus was put to death; in the Spirit, he was raised to life (2). We are called to this same glory.

Treasures From Our Tradition In the tradition of the Church, not necessarily in your own life’s timeline, confirmation is the midpoint of Christian initia-tion, standing between font and table. Full initiation is com-pleted when a confirmed person shares in the Eucharist. Centu-ries ago, this first sharing in the eucharistic assembly was marked by a first sharing in the Prayer of the Faithful. This prayer raises up the needs of the church and human community, the concerns of the faithful assembled, as they prepare to lift up the world to the Father’s love. So a person could not participate in the prayer until they were anointed with the “Oil of Thanks-giving.” Next, the newly baptized presented their gifts at the altar, a sure sign of their investment a new way of life. Until the sixth century, these people normally drank a mixture of milk and honey as a kind of pre-Communion. They were hungry, of course, since they were baptized hungry after long fasting, but this beautiful symbol of the promised land revealed them as God’s chosen, heirs to the promise. Although the “milk shake” disappeared centuries ago, we still see the vigor of this new life whenever adults are initiated at Easter, and increasingly in con-firmation ceremonies that are attentive to this meaning.

The Power of the Spirit Do you recognize the sacrament that is celebrated in today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles? When Peter and John imposed hands on those who had been baptized, they re-ceived the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of confirmation. The reading from the First Letter of Peter and the passage from John’s Gospel both consider the results of our baptism and con-firmation. Peter reminds us it is likely that we will have to suf-fer for what we believe. In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks clearly about the Holy Spirit, referring to a “Paraclete,” one who will stand with us to defend us. Poignantly, Jesus promises his disciples, and all of us, “I will not leave you orphans.” He has never left his followers orphaned. We have always had the Holy Spirit to guide us.

Reflecting on God’s Word The head nurse had called Mary Beth in desperation. “The patient in 207 can’t talk because of her throat cancer surgery. She is so agitated by her daughters that I’m concerned about her recovery. They fight over everything from what treatment she should receive to where she should go when we release her from the hospital. Help!” Mary Beth had done pastoral care in the hospital long enough to have gotten a reputation with the nursing staff for her healing presence. She was only in the room ten minutes before the patient was calm and smiling, and the sisters had agreed to sit down with a social worker to discuss their options. In today’s first reading we see the Holy Spirit at work in Philip, Peter, and John. They are living proof that Jesus’ healing presence lives in them. With words, prayer, and touch they communicate the Spirit that unites the crowds, heals the sick, and brings the Samaritans to life in the Spirit. Looking back at previous Easter readings from the Acts of the Apostles, we can see that now all the believers in the ancient world are united in the Spirit—Jews in Jerusalem, Hellenist Greek-speaking Jews, Gentiles, and now Samaritans. They are cured of their divisions and united in harmony through the healing presence of the Holy Spirit. Alleluia!

The Ascension of the Lord

Regarding the Ascension of the Lord, the ecclesiastical Provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Philadel-phia and Omaha have retained its cele-bration on the proper Thursday; all other Provinces have transferred this solem-nity to the Seventh Sunday of Easter (which this year is June 1st.) Therefore, Ascension Thursday is NOT a holy day of obligation in the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Congratulations, First Communicants Sixteen of our CCD students received their First Holy Com-munion from Fr. Obet on Saturday, May 17th. Over the coming weeks, you may notice some of them attending Mass in their First Communion attire. Give them a smile and congratulate them on their accomplishment!!

Kudos also to our dedicated and hard-working CCD cate-chists for another successful year. Great job!!

Dirty? A young couple moved into a new neighborhood. The next morning while they were eating breakfast, the young woman saw her neighbor hanging the wash outside. 'That laundry is not very clean,' she said. 'She doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap.' Her husband looked on, but remained silent. Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments. About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband: 'Look, she has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this.' The husband said, 'I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows.' And so it is with life. What we see when watching others depends on the window through which we look.

Light of Belief Every believer in this world must become a spark of light.

~ Si. Pope John XXIII

A Greater Hunger Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.
