PASTORAL SCENE

Our sincere sympathy and prayers are extended to the family and friends of those who were recently buried:

Lynn Johnson, Albina Godec and Robert Govang. May they and all our faithful departed, rest in peace.

22 Sunday OT 2020 The late Servant of God Catherine de Hueck Doherty, the founder of Madonna House, wrote the following reflection: When I look on loneliness I think of standing at 42nd Street and Broadway when I arrived in New York City. Hundreds of people were hurrying by and I didn’t know a single soul. Huge buildings full of people towered over me. I was in a new country completely different from anything I had ever known. I was overcome with loneliness. Loneliness has walked with me all my life. Some days it becomes very acute, such as when we celebrated the anni-versary of my husband Eddie’s death. When that happens I sit there and ask God, “What do you want of this? Why do you send loneliness again? “Then I hear the Lord saying, “Come higher, friend.” He is handing me loneliness so that I will grow in faith… I like to think of loneliness as if it is a person with a particu-lar job to do. So I imagine loneliness as a fancy doorman dressed in a brilliant uniform like you would see at an expensive hotel or club. He opens the door for us to enter in faith. As we pass through the door, we find steps to go up. Each step takes us further into faith. That is why loneliness is with us – to grow in faith. We are never friendless, for we know that Christ resurrected and promised he would always be with us. Loneliness brings us closer to him. Her words speak to many of us as we journey through life. The comfort of God’s presence can be seen in this woman of prayer and reflection. Her example of how quiet time, with God, leads us to the realization of His love and peace even when we are alone. As we celebrate today the patronal feast of Saint Monica, may her example of prayer and steadfastness in faith be the example to all of us in our living of the Catholic Faith. Blessings and Peace, Fr. Ted Marszal

Religion Question of the Week Why is “astrology” forbidden by the First Command-ment? (Answer on page 4)

Did You Know? Did you know that in two years St. Monica Church will be celebrating its 70th anniversary?

One Liner “What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabu-lary? A thesaurus”.

Sandwich Saturday Sandwich Saturday is this Saturday, September 5th at 9:00 am in the Parish Office. If you are able to help prepare the sandwiches, please call the Parish Office (216-662-8685) by Thursday, September 3rd to RSVP. At this time, we can only accommo-date 12 people so we can remain socially distant. Mask must also be worn as per the current man-date. As always, thank you for your support with this needed ministry.

Good Government “We must not be confused about the issue which confronts the world today. That issue is as old as recorded history. It is tyranny versus freedom. Tyranny has, throughout history, assumed many disguises, and has relied on many false philosophies to justify its attack on human freedom. Communism masquerades as a doctrine of progress. It is nothing of the kind. It is, on the contrary, a movement of re-action. It denies that man is the master of his fate, and consequently denies man’s right to govern himself. And even worse, communism denies the very existence of God. Religion is persecuted because it stands for freedom under God. This threat to our liberty and to our Faith must be faced by each one of us.” Harry S. Truman

33rd President of the United States

III Kate Veltman & Thomas Blazek

St. Benedict Catholic School In September of 2012, through the cooperation of the parishioners of both St. Monica Church and St. Martin of Tours Church, a new entity was formed for the education of the children in our community. It was called St. Benedict Catholic School. This academic year, which begins on Monday, September 1

st , will mark the 9

th

anniversary of St. Benedict Catholic School. At the beginning of the 21

st century, the Catholic

Schools in our area began to struggle for their existence. Enrollment was decreasing while costs were growing. Something had to be done, or there was the possibility that there would be no Catholic School in our area of Cuyahoga County. Both of our parishes, and their fami-lies, began to meet to find a solution. The result, after a very difficult process, was St. Benedict Catholic School. When our doors open this September, there are presently 386 students registered for grades K – 8, and another 23 students registered for the Pre-school. Be-cause of the issues surrounding the pandemic, St. Benedict’s will open remotely. There will be no in-person students in the school building. The grade-school stu-dents will all have chrome books (lab tops) for their re-mote learning. The Pre-school will not officially open for classes until the students are allowed to return to in-school learning. Mrs. Lisa Oriti, our school principal, with her adminis-trators Christine Malone and Katie Check, have worked hard all summer to prepare for the school opening under these difficult circumstances. We are very proud of the work they have done, and also the rest of our school staff to make this opening possible. We are also proud of our school families for their willingness to work with our administrators in this process. We thank you as parishioners for your support of St. Benedict Catholic School for the past eight years. We also thank Fr. Lou Miola and the parishioners of St. Martin of Tours for their support. With God’s help, we will continue to provide a good Catholic education for our community. God bless everyone. Fr. Thomas Haren

This Week’s Religion Question: Why is “astrology” forbidden by the First Command-ment? Answer: One of the tenants of “astrology” is that a per-son’s future destiny is controlled by the position of the stars when one is born. As Catholics we believe that this future knowledge is controlled only by God.
