otras a sesenta y otras a treinta. El que tiene oídos, que oiga.”

Pray for an End to Violence in Our
City! As we all know, violent crime has been a major issue over
the past few years. It has not been a major issue in the
neighborhood surrounding St Monica, but it has affected our
brothers and sisters in other areas in Indianapolis and many
of us feel called to do something, anything, to help. We are
not powerless against these things. Fr Todd mentioned the
principle of solidarity which, among other things, is a direct
demand of human and Christian brotherhood that involves a
love and care for all peoples that transcends national, racial,
ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. Fr. Todd also
stated that we cannot end violence in the city; however, we need to be more active and
beginning with prayer. We have accepted Fr. Todd’s challenge for us not to stay
indifferent, to come together as community and use prayer as a foundation to appeal to our
brothers and sisters to accept Christ Peace.
Several events/programs/vigils are taking place over the next few months. The Church
Federation of Greater Indianapolis holds a prayer vigil for all those families who have
been affected by violence twice a year. The next one is on September 25 (details to be
shared later). Leading up to that event, it is asked that everyone in the parish use a portion
of the Novena to the Holy Spirit to pray daily beginning this Tuesday, July 15 and
continue doing so up each day until September 25. There are Novena cards with
instructions in the Narthex, on St Monica's Facebook page and on it's website at
www.stmonicaindy.org. We have also invited Troy Riggs, the Public Safety Director for
the City of Indianapolis to come speak to us on Wednesday, August 27 at 7 pm in the St
Augustine Room on the topic of personal responsibility in preventing violence and also
how we can help the victims of violence.
There is also going to be a Peace Festival that will take place in the Martindale-
Brightwood neighborhood (at IPS School #51, 3426 Roosevelt Ave, 46218) called 'Circle
Up.' This event will feature an employment fair, a health fair, art exhibits, an education
fair, entertainment open mic, and fun family activities. Some folks from the parish are
part of the event planning committee that meets every Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at
IPS School 37, just east of the Juvenile Center at 25th & Keystone. Everyone from the
parish is invited to attend these committee meetings, as well as the event itself. There are
also prayer vigils that are held at the various sites in the city where violence/murders have
recently occurred and we will try to post those on the St Monica Facebook page. These
are obviously very powerful experiences - please keep an eye out for these events and
prayerfully consider attending them.
As you can see, prayer is the overwhelming theme for the above-mentioned
events. Maybe the most powerful thing we at St Monica can do is collectively pray—and
pray often—for victims, for families of victims, for those who commit crimes and their
families, for those working on something to help curb violence, and for ending other acts
of violence or injustice in our community. Please strongly and prayerfully consider, at a
minimum, doing the Novena daily. If the whole parish is collectively praying this
Novena, maybe mountains can be moved. Please grab a card from the narthex today!
Thank you!

Combine Prayer and Exercise with SoulCore at St.
Monica! SoulCore is a 50-minute workout combining Pilates and stretches—all done while
praying the rosary! A stretch or core-strengthening position is held for every Hail Mary,
with a rest time between each decade to learn about the fruits of the mysteries of the most
holy rosary. In a one-month trial run at St. Monica, participants found it to be
“challenging,” “reflective” and “a great way to combine workout and prayer.” The
workout is DVD-led—and free of charge! It’s held every Monday in the St. Augustine
Room from 6-7 p.m. Wear comfortable clothes, and bring a mat. No need to call to say
you’re coming, but if you’d like more information, call Natalie Hoefer at 317-295-1697.

¡Gracias!
