Domingo Escritura Reflexions

Sunday Scripture Reflections

Reading 1 Jeremiah 31:7-9 People who foretell times of trouble are often called "prophets of doom and gloom." At times Jeremiah had to fulfill that role for the Israelites. However, in today's read-ing, he assures God's people that they will be released from captivity in Assyria. Their return will be like a new exodus from Egypt of old. God speaks through Jeremiah of a trium-phant and joyful homecoming. Our God is a God of freedom and salvation from slavery of every kind. No matter how far away we wander, he is always ready to welcome us home through the Church and the sacraments.

Reading 2 Hebrews 5:1-6 In Old Testament times, the high priest was chosen to serve as the people's representative before God. He of-fered sacrifices to atone or make up for the sins of the people as well as his own sins. Jesus, however, was greater than any high priest chosen from the priestly clan of Israel. As the Son of God, he has no equal. We join with the sacrifice of Jesus each time we celebrate the Eucharist. He knows our human weakness because he has shared it. And he does not place himself far above us but shares his glory with us.

Gospel Mark 10:46-52

When someone calls attention to himself in a crowd, others sometimes say, "Stop making a spectacle of yourself!" In today's gospel story, it is the blind beggar Bartimaeus who is irritating the crowd. He is shouting so persistently to Jesus that the people are embarrassed by this public display of neediness. They attempt to shush him. But Bartimaeus shouts, "Son of David, have pity on me!" Jesus hears the beggar's plea and restores his sight. He tells Barti-maeus that his own faith has healed him. We all suffer from blindness of one kind or another because we fail to see things as Jesus does. "I want to see" should be our daily prayer to him.

====================================== ARCHDIOCESE OF PHILADELPHIA

CALLED BY NAME A FUTURE FULL OF HOPE

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has initiated a program , “Called By Name” - a program to promote vocations to the priesthood. All parishes within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia are being asked to actively participate and promote this vital initiative. It will run from October 25 to November 15th. More details are forthcoming in next week’s bul-letin but briefly - it involves your help in identifying and encouraging those who may have a vocation to the priesthood. And most important—are your prayers . Please pray….. God of gracious love,

You gathered us first at the waters of baptism, and you lead us through life with faithfulness.

Raise up from among our parish family, leaders to serve your people as Priests.

To those whom You call, give grace and courage to discern

how they may best serve you. To all of us,

give us good hearts so we might encourage them along the way.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, and with your Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Compassion Exercise Toward People you Encounter

One most striking characteristic of Jesus was the love and compassion with which he treated others, no matter who they were or how they behaved.

Where would we be if Jesus treated us as we sometimes treat people we just don’t like? What ever happened to having compassion for others? Where is our understanding of humanity’s weaknesses and frail-ty?

The following is an exercise to help increase the amount of compassion in the world, in our relation-ships with others and our own personal sense of peace. It will hopefully help us to identify with the other per-son. We will come to know and understand them and ourselves better. After all, are we not “one body in Christ”.

This exercise can be done anywhere that people gather (airports, malls, parks, beaches, work, neighbor-hoods, sporting events, in traffic jams, family gather-ings etc.) . It can be de used on people with whom you have a difficult relationship, old enemies, and antago-nists still present in your memories. And the other person does not even have to be aware or know you are doing this.

Try to do all five steps on the same person. With your attention focused on the person,

repeat to yourself:

Step 1: “Just like me, this person is seeking some hap-piness for his/her life.” Step 2: “Just like me, this person is trying to avoid suffering in his/her life.” Step 3: “Just like me, this person has known sadness, loneliness & despair.” Step 4: “Just like me, this person is seeking to fulfill his/her needs.” Step 5: “Just like me, this person is learning about life.” .
