Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3

FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR

Dear Friends in Christ, In the section of A Christmas Carol with the ghost of Christmas past, we learn that Belle is Scrooge’s former fiancée. When Scrooge sees Belle, he is reminded of his greed. She rejected him because he changed too much. She tells him: "Another idol has displaced me; and if it can cheer and comfort you in time to come, as I would have tried to do, I have no just cause to grieve.” “What Idol has displaced you?” he rejoined. “A golden one.” In other words, the love of gold or money replaced Scrooge's love for her and so she breaks off their relationship. Scrooge later sees a vision of Belle who has married someone else and is surrounded by loving, happy children. Because he loved money more than love, he lost Belle thereby losing the only happiness he had in his life. In the story, we are not told that Scrooge didn’t love Belle, but just that he loved money more. I guess the story points out that although he thought he was wise because of his abilities with making and keeping money, he was really the biggest fool because he gave his life to passing values. In contrast, King Solomon was rewarded by God because he asked for an understanding heart to better serve God’s people. In the gospel, the treasure buried in the field and the pearl of great price are metaphors for the kingdom of God. Jesus teaches that there is nothing more valuable so we must be willing to set aside anything that stands in the way of entering that kingdom. The question that always remains is, “Are we willing to pay the price?” Could God say to us: “Another idol has displaced me.” Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Gregg

Because all printed material has been removed from the Church due to coronavirus concerns, we are including below the music for today’s liturgy that you would normally find in our Journeysongs hymnal.

You are encouraged to pray these words along with the cantor (rather than sing them) during the pandemic.

ENTRANCE HYMN Praise to the Lord

LOBE DEN HERREN

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the king of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation! Come, all who hear: Now to his altar draw near, Joining in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, above all things so wondrously reigning, Shelt’ring you under his wings, and so gently sustaining. Have you not seen all that is needful has been Sent by his gracious ordaining?

Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you; Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, As with his love he befriends you.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that has life and breath come now with praises before him! Let the “Amen” sound from his people again, Gladly with praise we adore him!

Text: 14 14 47 8; Joachim Neander, 1650–1680; tr. by Catherine Winkworth, 1827–1878, alt. Music: LOBE DEN HERREN; Ernewerten Getsangbuch, Stralsund, 1665

PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS Where Love Is Found

Dan Schutte

Refrain: Where charity and love are found, there will the face of God be seen. The love of Christ will bind our hearts; as one body we will be.

Love is patient, love is kind, never boastful, never proud. Love is hopeful in its waiting, ever trusting in God’s light.

Love is steadfast to the end, ever ready to endure. Love is gracious in its kindness, ever ready to forgive.

Though I speak with angel’s tongues, I am nothing more than sound. I am but a cymbal clanging if I sing without God’s love.

There are three things that will last: there is faith, hope and love. But the greatest of all blessings is the faithfulness of love.

COMMUNION SONG Blest Are They

David Haas

Blest are they, the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God. Blest are they, full of sorrow, they shall be consoled.

Rejoice and be glad! Blessed are you, holy are you! Rejoice and be glad! Yours is the kingdom of God!

Blest are they, the lowly ones, they shall inherit the earth. Blest are they who hunger and thirst, they shall have their fill.

Blest are they who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs. Blest are they, the pure of heart, they shall see God!

Blest are they who seek peace; they are the children of God. Blest are they who suffer in faith, the glory of God is theirs.

Blest are you who suffer hate, all because of me. Rejoice and be glad, yours is the kingdom; shine for all to see.

FINAL HYMN Lead Me, Lord

John D. Becker

Blessed are the poor in spirit, longing for their Lord, for God’s coming kingdom shall be theirs. Blessed are the sorrowing, for they shall be consoled, and the meek shall come to rule the world.

Refrain: Lead me, Lord, lead me, Lord, by the light of truth to seek and to find the narrow way. Be my way; be my truth; be my life, my Lord, and lead me, Lord, today.

Blessed are the merciful, for mercy shall be theirs, and the pure in heart shall see their God. Blest are they whose hunger only holiness can fill, for I say they shall be satisfied.

Blest are they who through their lifetimes sow the seeds of peace; all will call them children of the Lord. Blest are you, though persecuted in your holy life, for in heaven, great is your reward.

Act now to help Catholic schools and families! COVID-19 has meant many changes for all schools, including Catholic schools It has also meant changes in income for many families. Please join the FCCB in asking Congress to include additional relief for Catholic schools in the next emergency relief package.

Public schools are asking for $300 billion dollars, and it is important to make sure that Catholic school families also receive emergency relief. Please take a moment to contact your Members of Congress to ask for emergency aid to Catholic schools and families in the next COVID-19 relief package. We are asking Congress for direct funding to families for education expenses, including Catholic school tuition. We encourage you to add your own personal story about your Catholic school experience in the message as well. And our schools urgently need help in this time of uncertainty.

As Father Ailbe would say: Scams abound, especially when times are tough. Here are two scams targeting seniors right now:

THE GRANDPARENT SCAM (information is from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department):

Preying on the elderly is a common tactic criminals use when attempting to steal money. The grandparent scam is where a criminal calls an elderly person about a family member, or pretends to be a family member, who needs help, asks for cash money, and emphasizes that the elderly person needs to keep it a secret. Most times, the cash amount is more than $10,000, and it may be delivered to the criminal via an unsuspecting third-party courier.

The grandparent scam is all too common, but there are things you and your loved ones can do to prevent becoming a victim. • Don't answer the phone if you don't

recognize the phone number or name. ♦ Verify information using a phone number that you know (like calling a family ember to confirm the story). ♦ Don't keep secrets. If the caller tells

you not to tell anyone, that is a good sign it may be a scam.

♦ Never give cash to anyone you don't know. The government will never ask you for money over the phone.

♦ If you are in doubt, call the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office at 582-6200.

THE MEDICARE SCAM (information is from Medicare):

Have you gotten robocalls, text messages, or emails offering free face masks? Or maybe you've seen social media posts about free COVID-19 testing kits, "cures," or protective equipment? Unfortunately scammers are using the COVID-19 pandemic to try to steal your Medicare Number and personal info. If anyone reaches out to get your Medicare Number or personal information in exchange for something, you can bet it's a scam.

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

“At this time, when indications have been given to exit out of quarantine, we pray the Lord will grant to His people, all of us, the grace of prudence and obedience to these indications, so that the pandemic does not return.” ~Pope Francis on 4/28/20
